Cleveland Indians become the Cleveland Guardians

While searching for evidence of the Cardinals with front numbers in '97, I watched a few Sports Center league-wide highlight clips.  It's so incredible how much better baseball looks in (all but two of) the parks of today vs watching highlights from all the astroturf multipurpose stadium.  It just seemed so sterile and artificial.  Not pleasing to the eyes at all.  Phillies at Expos was especially brutal considering the combo of astroturf, cookie-cutter field, and artificial lights.

They were actually selling these jerseys at the team store since their home opener at least. I saw them on in person on opening day and wondered if the team would wear them without making a formal announcement. Next game I went to a few weeks later I asked a team store employee about them and he said they released these jerseys for the team store to "see how well they would sell." He mentioned only like two or three people had bought one to his knowledge. 

 

I went to the game this past Saturday, pretty much the only jerseys they had left are those white ones and a few gray. I'm guessing they are now available online since they aren't selling well.

HOWEVER,

They did play one game on Sep 02 '97 where they played for a special charity. The jerseys from that one game do have numbers on the front.  But they were a special one-off and had a special patch as well just for that one game. The rest of the season and the '98 season their regular uniforms did not have numbers. 

Just making a note here that this is some peak-CCSLC content. The boards took a few posts to track down a very specific uniform and situation to clarify a point that few people outside of these boards (or the Uni-Watch replies) would even understand, let alone care about. Any guesses on how the trademark battle with the roller derby team will turn out? With the OG Guardians selling merch now it might get tougher. It would be the most Cleveland thing ever for them to bungle a name change

I say that because it's easy to read and repeat what others say about things; it's a little different when you hear things straight from the source. Such has been the case for me the past two years, as I've gotten to know and speak with a good number of indigenous peoples up here in the upper midwest and pacific northwest (and a few back down where I come from), and with some I have brought up this issue.  And just from my own experience, their opinions vary widely across the board on some Native-themed nicknames (the Indians obviously not being one; most all I asked that about shot that down as soon as it was brought up.)

 

Most of my experience has been with the Lakota Nations here in South Dakota (in fact I'm dating a Lakota woman now), but I've also spoken with some of the Crow and Cheyenne peoples up in Southeastern Montana, some up in northeastern Washington state, some up in Western New York (I want to say Onondaga), a good number of Creek in Oklahoma, and of course some of the Seminole nation back down in Florida and what few there are in northern Alabama.

 

What's crazy is that I actually saw a few of the Crow and Cheyenne wearing KC Chiefs gear and even a few with the former WTF logo. Some didn't seem too bothered by it; a few were actually proud of it. But, by and large, it seems the two most offensive mascots to most of the ones I talked to were the **dians and R****ins. None seemed to have an issue with the Chiefs arrowhead, and opinions were mixed as far as thr Braves' tomahawk (probably more so the tomahawk on its own rather than the actual Braves nickname).

 

Just offering this little snippet up in case anyone was curious. 

Here in Tucson where I live there are quite a few tribes surrounding the Tucson area.  When Hatclub was still active at the mall the store owner told me that 97% of their sales of the chief wahoo hat where being gobbled up by Tohono, San Xavier and Yaqui members.  He said they loved the hat and the (Washington Football Team) one too.  On the other hand I know quite a few natives up in Washington State (l lived up there for a few years) that don't like any of the native logos or team names.    I also know a handful of others in that same tribe (Yakama) that love the Florida State and Washington (Washington Football Team) gear.  On the other hand we have the activist Amanda Blackhorse up on the Navajo reservation that actively fought against the Washington name.  The high school on the Navajo nation was called the (Washington Football Team) and the kids going there loved the name.  I feel like it is like anything in life; people in one group all have different tastes and opinions.  Some natives hate the team nicknames and others want them gone.

You are absolutely right.  Each nation is itself made up of an incredibly diverse group of people, and then the nations are also very different from one another. 
 

It would be ludicrous to suggest that unanimity is even possible among such a pluralistic group. This is why consensus is so important, and the people through their elected representatives have come to the consensus that the names must go.

Like most flashpoints of our lovely culture war, it's largely about whether and where you went to college. 

 

There was some interview with some guy, I don't think he worked for any NGO, who said something like "if they don't think about us with their sports teams, they won't think about us at all," which is sad but true. Lots of Americans can easily go cradle to grave without personally encountering any Native Americans. Ohio, where they're 0.2% of the population, is probably right up there as one of those places.

I'm sure people have encountered Native Americans more often than they realize, it's just that sports has taught us that they either look like Chief Wahoo, always have feathers on their heads, or carry tomahawks and scream like savages all the time.  I've certainly never encountered anyone who meets any of those descriptions.

 

His point might be valid, but I'm not sure he (or they) want people thinking about them in the way that sports depicts them.

I can't think of when I've met any full-blooded Natives outside of maybe a school assembly at one point long ago. I know lots of India Indians, but I'm from the northwest suburbs of Chicago, so why wouldn't I. I used to work with a guy who said he was half Native, but he was also a compulsive liar who we found out had never paid income taxes, so I dunno.

 

On the topic of money, if the Indians are going to keep selling old merchandise alongside the new stuff, they should make sure most of the profits go to Native American causes. It's just a matter of dispersing it so that the money ends up going to people who need it and doesn't just disappear into murky NGOs, like the gun-toting Somali warlords but with laptops and kickball leagues.

This is true. We kept extra stock of any type of Chief Wahoo or Screaming Braves caps we got at the Lids stores in AZ when I worked there because they always sold really well to natives.

Hopefully next year on MLB The Show Cleveland's throwback uniforms will be retained.  The 1975 Red Top/Navy Top, the 1989 Home White, the 1994 Home White/Navy Alternate will hopefully at least say "Cleveland".

I hope part of the settlement is to allow the roller derby team to stage a bout at Progressive Field.  Seeing a flat track set up in the outfield would be pretty cool

So new gear starting Monday? Awesome! I've been putting off buying anything, mainly because I don't like that plain Block C. I don't know why they never went with at least a white outline on the hats.
