I can never keep up with the Royals' changes. I thought they already had a powder blue alternate?

They did but the wordmark had a royal blue outline and the front numbers were royal blue, now everything is solid white.

The changes are a lateral move at worst, possibly an upgrade overall. I like that this lines them up a little more with their 70s and 80s looks. It's ultimately minor changes, cleaning up their look, most people may not notice the changes even considering the changes in the road wordmark. And with the road jerseys its really just whether you prefer the block letters or script, I think both look good and fit with the Royals history.

I like the thicker striping here because it's just a single stripe and not 3 (blue/white/blue) like from the 70s/80s, Basically, like the striping from the Padres brown SAN DIEGO jerseys, spring training jerseys and the pants to go with both, just of the edge of the sleeve instead of on it. The home uniform looks great. The powder blue alt is kinda lateral. Don't mind the white lettering (and I actually prefer no powder blue pants), but maybe the stripe should've been royal blue instead of white. The roads are tricky. I don't mind the block, but preferred the script. Although, I agree, it was skinnier so didn't quite work as well as the LOS ANGELES script for the Dodgers. I do like the removal of the white outlines, but I can see it making them closer to looking like the Dodgers again. That's where the block font differentiates the two. But I love how the numbers are now consistent throughout. Used to be the home whites and royal KC alts had the thicker numbers while the powder blue and roads had the thinner numbers that also looked a little different from the others. This looks much better.

Overall, still a great set.

I'm actually super happy that they got rid of the royal blue outline on the powder blue. It now looks much more like their original powder blue from back in the day. Kind of upset they got rid of white outlines on the road, but it still looks pretty good. Kind of a lateral move overall, but that's not necessarily a bad thing

Good update for the Royals, and I LOVE that road script. The cursive is good, but this sets them apart from the Dodgers a bit more, and it’s one of those things I was always hoping they would do, but never really expected them to.

I also love that they deleted white outlines  on the grey. White outlines are often just clutter. It does bring them closer to the Dodgers, but that’s a minor complaint. When the Reds dump black, I hope white outlines also go away.

The same applies to the Tigers and Yankees’ road jerseys.

The homes are almost identical, minus the name/logos.  Look at this photo of the back of the home uniform....

Up close the Rockies don't look bad, but the issue is that from even a bit of a distance the purple pinstripes just look black. Simply swapping all the purple & black elements would make a huge difference.

It's quite maddening that the Royals are the one MLB team (with the exception of Toronto) who really should commit to a solid powder blue road look more than anyone--certainly more so than teams like the Cardinals and Rangers--and yet they continue to do this half measure thing.

Why exactly is that? Powder blue isn't one of their actual colours, and their name is literally "Royals". Why would you want a road uniform with almost no actual royal blue?

The whole PBFPBS started because teams wanted to capitalize on the emergence of colour TV, and none of them even bothered trying to incorporate it into their scheme. The Rays are the only team in baseball who actually uses the colour properly.

If the Royals want to differentiate themselves they should add a little metallic gold to their uniforms. Just a thin outline similar to the special uniforms they wore after winning the WS.

I don't know why they've never done an arched KANSAS CITY mark that matches the KC in the logo. Like this (only with a custom font that better matches the logo). It alleviates any issues with the skinny script, while not being a simple, basic block font.

KANSAS-CITY-wordmark

I like it more than the plain block they're using now, but less than the original tailed script they brought back in 2006 or so.

This redesign kinda sucks. The letters look too small, and the jerseys look too plain. I've always thought the solution to differentiating the Royals and Dodgers on the road was to play up the white outlines and blue-white-blue trim while also giving the road grey a subtle blue tinge, acting as a nod to the '80s teams without going full-on powder blue. I also don't understand why they've been outsmarting themselves with the powder blue alts for like 15 years now: all the elements should be white with blue trim. They kept toggling scripts and numbers between blue and white. Now there are no outlines at all. I don't get it.

As a Royals fan, I wasn't exactly asking for this, but I like it.  I preferred the old road jersey, but the new one looks kind of neat.  The alts are also a big step up.  I just wish the trim was thinner (and the numbers, which has been a complaint of mine for a while now).  Also, I'll really miss the gold-trim jersey.  That was one of the best alts in the league.

This is a massive downgrade by the Royals. The script was so much better on the road jerseys than boring block letters. So disappointing.

They could have addressed people's complaints about the script being too skinny/not legible enough by simply bringing back the larger, more condensed script they used from 2006-2011.

That is more or less what happened, but I thought it looked all right. The properly proportioned replacement looked too small. The stretched-out one fit the space better and felt of a kind with the not-quite-matched-up Atlanta script, another one that "fixing" made worse.

I thought it looked bad. Personally, a “KC” on the chest would’ve been a better alternative.

I’m torn on the Royals changes. I feel like there are a couple of really good tweaks, but they are offset by some poor ones and the whole thing feels lateral.

I like the thickened piping overall, and the move to clean white word marks and numbers on the powder blue set is a nicer nod to the 70’s-80’s than the last powder blue alt was. But I also feel that this new powder blue set needs the same triple stripe cuff as the 70’s-80’s sets to provide a better balance between powder, white, and royal. Right now, I don’t think that balance is there. They may have been better off just doing a straight up Bo Jackson throwback as-is, really, and I’m not sure why they don’t just do that instead of continually wearing inferior nods to it.

Furthermore, I get that the block arch wordmark has historical precedence and isn’t random by any means, but it really lacks the character the previous script had.  I feel like the road uniform just had a fair bit of life sucked out of it. It may need a little bit of white as well. The home uniform does look really good with the thickened piping, though.

I dunno, this is one of those moves where I see how lateral the full overall result was, and despite the good parts, I just wonder why it was even done at all. It all comes across as change for change’s sake rather than deliberate, worthwhile improvements.

New road uni, two new alts. Sleeve piping is now thick stripe. And I think the sleeve patches no longer have the black drop shadow that had been around forever. The powder blue jersey is really cool.

Why would they get rid of the beautiful script for a generic block font?

If anything remove the white outline and call it a day.

They did. Here's a brief timeline of their most recent powder blue alts. There have been 3 different ones since they introduced the first one in 2008. The 2010-2011 alt is the same one as 2008-2009, but they wore it with a new alt powder cap for those 2 years.

I think I like the 2012-21 the best? The new one is easily the worst, IMO -- having an outline looks so much better on a powder blue uniform, regardless of whether it's white outlined in royal blue, or vice versa.

This entire set is a downgrade.

That this new powder blue top is nearly identical to the old road one makes the white pants look like a mistake. I like everything else they did, but wearing light blue with their home pants has always been a mistake, but is now an indefensible one.
