The fact that people are calling Minnesota the worst 13 win team because they didn't blowout teams like the 07 Patriots?

Do we overemphasis point differential?

they’re the worst 13-win team because in all of their losses  they got blown out by  decent teams. Had those been close then maybe they wouldn’t be looked at as the worst. But then they go out and get beat - at home - by the 6 seed.

Any comparison to Patriots teams of that era is foolish, regardless of NE’s point differential. The Vikings stunk, and just about everyone knew it.

Last year Buffalo blew out everybody they beat but lost every close game to a decent team

WILD CARD

San Francisco 34 Seattle 21

Jacksonville 28 Los Angeles 25

Buffalo 36 Miami 17

New York 21 Minnesota 18

Cincinnati 32 Baltimore 10

Tampa Bay 17 Dallas 14

Just need Tampa for the wild card sweep.

Also that Sam Hubbard fumble return for touchdown broke the record for the longest in NFL playoff history. It broke the record set in 1975. The team who gave up that fumble also happened to be from Baltimore.

Flip it around; their losses were close (same this year too).

You want blowout wins and close losses. You don't want blowout losses and close wins. Today shows why.

Now we will see if the Ravens make it a game in Cincinnati like Miami did in Buffalo..

Well! They sure did but the win slipped literally off of their hands in more ways than one.

2 unexpected competitive games in MIA-BUF and BAL-CIN. Except Seattle-SF, the weekend delivered exciting, close games and another legendary playoff comeback (for the Jags), or chokejob (Chargers) depending on your perspective.

The grand finale of the round, Bucs-Cowboys on Monday. Can the Cowboys finally get that silverback gorilla called their winless record against Tom Brady off of their backs?

They had a negative point differential man. First one ever to win 13+ and to have it be negative. Point differential isn't the end all, be all, stat but it's very useful when determining the overall quality of a team. Good teams tend to win big and if they lose, they're close games.

Minnesota was the exact opposite.

The Vikings were 11-0 in one score games coming into this game. One score games are rather random in terms of who wins, meaning most teams would expect to be somewhere around .500 in those games. The Vikings were really a 8-9 or 9-8 type of team, who just got historically lucky in tight contests.

Congrats @Sportfor seeing a playoff win live and in person; that's the dream scenario for a sports fan, and even better when you see a miracle fumble recovery like that.

Five games and not a stinker among them (well, half of Hawks/Niners, at least) portends either a 12-9 slugfest tonight or a 43-6 blowout. And the Bucs haven't topped 31 points all season long -- even with those receivers -- so I have a good feeling about what direction that blowout comes from.

Looking ahead, I see the Bills/Bengals being the best game of next week, and I look forward to the Bills/Chiefs/Bengals swapping AFC titles through the next decade. And, tbh, I'd be happy with just one for Buffalo.

Too soon predictions:

- The Ravens ran all over the Bengals last night and the Bills can do the same. Being at home is worth 6 points for Buffalo, especially with an injured Cincinnati line. (my overconfidence might be very painful in a week's time)

- The Vikings are frauds and the Eagles have been great all year, so I think that Giants win can't be predictive of the future. Giants are a great story, but Philly wins.

- Doesn't matter who wins tonight, 49ers are too good and have been my Super Bowl favorite for weeks. They'll beat Tampa or Dallas, no problem.

- That leaves Chiefs/Jax as most intriguing. Jacksonville is 6-1 since their bye in late November, and they've only had two losses beyond one score all season, including a ten-point loss at the Chiefs (always at Arrowhead!) right before their bye. The Jags have been under .500 for most of the season, so it obscures that they've actually been a solid team. They're the anti-Vikings, in that way, and have been pulling out miracle wins over the past several weeks. Does their magic run out? Or are they quietly becoming a juggernaut?

I think KC/Jax comes down to coaching. If this were a decade ago, I'd like Pederson's chances a lot more. But Reid has figured it out, so it's KC once again.

Man, what a fantastic weekend of football. Every game came down to the wire. You just know the Bucs are gonna ruin it by going down early and losing by four scores.

I was offered tickets to next weeks 49ers game (wife’s aunt is a season ticket holder), and turned them down. Not interested in watching any Cowboys game live, and I’ve already seen the 49ers crush my Bucs live at Levi’s Stadium once this season. I don’t need to sit through that nonsense again.

Thanks. My voice is gone, I'm very tired because adrenaline didn't let me sleep until after 2, and I have to be alert at work this morning, which is going to be hard, but it was worth it. Incredible moment. I was also at the Raiders game last year, which was a different kind of thrilling. That was lifting a 31 year old gorilla off our backs. This was just hanging to a ledge and hoping not to fall off.

On the fumble recovery TD, at that point I was in a pit of despair and was only hoping for a stop and holding them to 3. A 14 point play was too much to ever dream about. We were in the 300 level on the far side of the field so I didn't really see what happened, but 4 Bengals running the other direction and the crowd clued me in. Of course, I was certain there'd be a lengthy review and it would be determined that he'd crossed the line so I didn't let myself get too excited. I was at about 50%. The rest of the crowd was pandemonium. The most rowdy thing I've ever seen in a stadium. These 3 strangers next to me who are my new BFFs were basically climbing on me, my wife on my right was basically climbing on me. I was filled with anxiety until they let us kick the extra point. That might be the single greatest play in the history of the Cincinnati Bengals.

And to get past the Ravens is just relief. I don't think there's a lot of actual X's and O's analysis to be gleamed from that because that is just what the Ravens do and they're too familiar with the Bengals. They're a matchup problem for the Bengals and I think our offense will look a lot better, especially if they get more than what felt like 5 total possessions. I hated this matchup since the Hamlin injury and knew the Ravens would spend two full weeks gaming their systems to be ready. Credit to them.

It's weird being the team good stuff happens too. Marvin Lewis' Bengals lose that game by two touchdowns.

Has anyone checked on @Sec19Row53?  I want to send my condolences.

All good - thanks for asking. Trying to catch up on all of the stuff I've missed here over the last three plus weeks.

I've spent some time between Christmas and New Year's with my (hopefully) future wife as she's building a new house, and then was in San Antonio on business last week. I saw none of the Packers' win over the Vikings, and very little of the loss to the Lions. We weren't going anywhere in the playoffs, as the 49ers would have boat raced us. I'm in a better place in life knowing that how my teams perform no longer affects my emotions 🙂

That's the key, man. The secret to sports, IMO. Sports have become far more enjoyable now that my emotional state doesn't ride on the outcome of a game.

First was fun, second was frustrating, and agreed on the third.   The line couldn't keep Hutchinson off Rodgers, the Niners would have feasted like they always seem to do.
