MLB 2023 Uniform/Logo Changes

With all its curvy letters, Chicago is a name that looks flat-out beautiful in a script.  Someone should use it.

The Cubs’ road grays were designed to go with a red-brimmed hat. The blue wordmark/name and red numbers look awkward without it. 

 

I’d like to see the old road hat return, and for the Cubs to redesign the blue alt. Nix the NL logo, put the walking bear on the left sleeve and add the cap logo to the left breast. Then for a Sunday home alt, bring back the 80s road uniforms. Done and dusted.

I believe in one team, one hat, so no to the red brims. 

 

The blue uniforms should basically be the '80s road uniforms with red/white piping and the primary logo.

Was about to say this...I'm in the minority of people who liked the Cuba grays, I would've been fine with the Cubs junking the current grays mostly because they're kinda blah.  Not sure what the best answer would be tbh, whether it's modernizing the 60s grays, making a new version of the 80s blues or trying to polish the turd that is the current grays.

Honestly, it’s about time MLB started dropping forced gray jerseys and I hope my Braves follow suit. Home Whites, Away Navy, Friday Reds, and Hank Throwbacks.

I’m a Braves fan and disagree. The road grays are classic and have been worn for ages. They won the 2021 World Series in the grays. I believe special occasion uniforms (Negro Leagues, one off throwbacks) won’t count towards the proposed 4+1 rule. The Braves aren’t superfluous like some other teams, so their 4+1 could be their current set consisting of home white, road gray, red alt, blue alt, and whatever the City Connect uniform is. They shouldn’t have to get rid of anything. My one critique for the Braves is that I wish they’d wear the regular cap on the road with the grays. I’m fine with the all navy blue as a change of pace and it’s nice with the blue jersey, but they need to bring that red bill back on the road.

If that's the case, it hasn't always been the case.  We're going back a ways here, but IIRC the '80s Cubs wore white pants with their road blue tops (didn't even have gray tops.)

The Cubs and Astros had to get special dispensation from the National League, as I recall. I think there was a year in the '80s where the Rangers only had royal blue road jerseys, but I don't remember their pants situation, and it's only the Rangers, so who cares.

 

The grey Atlanta uniforms are classic. I miss the red brims and vertical arched names, though.

I'm in the same boat with you - I liked the Cuba's, even though I understand the flack they get. I feel like retooling the 60s grays would be a good idea, and I can get on board with another 80s-style getup, however I'm no aesthetic specialist.

Sigh… the Mariners need to ditch the Sunday creme. They sold well because of the novelty. Getting rid of the gray is a softball-league style move. Just change up the road grays so they have a new look.

In Boston I’ve always seen that gray jerseys seem to sell better to fans than one might think. Maybe here it’s because those have the names on the back (though modern home replicas don’t seem to care about that), maybe it’s because gray is more casual and goes with things more than a bright white jersey. But the sales may be a team-by-team thing.

Re Seattle, I’ve always defended their look as a modern classic but they’ve really gone death by a thousand cuts here. The navy would be fine (boring, but fine) if it used normal block numbering and not that dated, try hard serif font. The teal only works at home. The cream is a disaster, and the powder blues were around so briefly that I’ve already forgotten about them. This team desperately needs a Padres-style reboot, on and off the field.

I think it's something to do with the classic teams. The Yankees sell a ton of the gray as well, probably 60-40 vs home from what I've seen. Tons of throwback BPs as well.

Along with whoever mentioned seeing the White Sox away jerseys a couple pages back, I'm wondering if it could be because the grey jerseys have the city name on them? Especially for cities like Chicago, New York and Boston where the city itself is a brand of sorts that gets repped, some people might be more attracted to a jersey that says "Chicago", "New York" or "Boston" on the front.

 

The White Sox and Yankees also have pinstripes and logos on the whites as opposed to a plain jersey with a script so some people also might prefer the simpler look of the greys over something a bit more "gaudy" for everyday wear of the whites (along with the city name being on the front thing).

I have no problem with MLB teams shifting away from gray jerseys, as in many cases they are simply lacking aesthetically. The Mariners don't really need 'em, I love their color scheme and the ID should focus on them.

 

There are teams that should/would never lose their grays (NYY, Bos, CWS, STL, etc.) because they have a classic or particularly nice set. But there are some really uninspired looks (as a Cleveland fan, it's easily the most boring look we have) and tradition is the only thing keeping them around. That said, people love tradition and I get the negative responses here.

 

I am likely in the minority, but I feel like a number of teams could make a mono road look work in different colors. While overdone recently, I enjoy a light blue road look. I think an all-navy set could work for a few teams as well. The Padres do it really well without using actual gray.

I actually love the Guard's gray uni's. It's the only uniform that I'm a fan of in their set. I cant stand the navy road alternate with no piping, and wished they would return to wearing navy at home (preferably with the script "Guardians") with white piping on the sleeves. They should just slap the Guardians wordmarks/logos/fonts on their 2016-2018 set (which they wore with red accessories) and call it a day.  I would ditch the red jersey, and maybe add a cream Sunday home alternate.

FWIW, I work for a Minor League team, and there was discussion about a team wanting to wear a grey throwback jersey at home. So it's at least now a rule in MiLB, so I would hope that would also apply to the Majors since they control the whole system now.
