2024 NFL Changes

Recommended Posts

I have no idea if there is validity to this, but former Falcons running back Jamal Anderson (from the 1998 run and famous for the Dirty Bird) is claiming new uniforms for 2025. Most of the context is in the video. He is an advocate for simpler uniforms but says he doesn’t know anything about the new design. Is it true? 2024 will be the fifth year in the current design, so they are eligible in 2025. Guess we’ll have to see.

I don't know if it's true, but this is a great looking set. I mentioned in a previous post that teams should reconsider mixing and matching each part of their uniforms. This is what I had in mind. One pair of pants for all three jerseys, different socks for the red-heavy jerseys, and these are good takes on past Falcons jerseys.

Probably a little late if he's trying to be the first person on the committee, since they'd have had to notify the league in March of 2023.  I cannot believe it's been 5 seasons in those clown suits - feels like that trash was just released a season or two ago.

Jamal Anderson has been pretty tight with the Falcons brass the past few seasons, and he's cleaned up his act seemingly after some pretty embarrassing  incidents that lead to some concern about his state of mind on a daily basis.

Not making light of it, but the point I am making is he's probably not the person to take anything they say with anything other than the grainiest of grains of salt.

It's possible he has been informed by officials there are new unis, but simply doesn't understand the process. It's just as likely that he read a post from someone on Reddit or X and has taken that as his confirmation, because, as I said, he's got some cobwebs in his attic.

Either way, I would say it's probably a safe bet for anyone to say they have been informed the Falcons are getting new uniforms because there's no way Arthur Blank isn't going to follow in the trash-stash-rehash Nike uni cycle b/c the current jerseys aren't popular at all.

The what now?

- Titans is a standout moniker, unlike "Bears," "Lions," "Commanders," etc.

- Like what Nashville did with the Predators, which is equally an awesome brand, they chose a starting point of something unique to the city and built around it -- in this case, the Parthenon.

- Logo is tailored for a football helmet, and is a perfect balance of signifying the locale (Tennessee flag motif) and the moniker (shield, flames, the sword effect of the T).

- Colors are fantastic

- Their previous uniforms were modern classics

My tongue is halfway in my cheek here, but sorry that they created a brand in the late 90s and didn't use a brutalist hand-drawn logo and walk out with northwestern stripes on their sleeves...

The Titans current uniforms are a total train wreck, but I’ve always kinda loved what they initially came up with. I’ve always liked the “Flaming Thumbtack” logo, the sword is an EXCELLENT alt logo, and the colors are really good. I also agree that their initial Titans uniforms were basically perfect, and every tweak they made to that set made it worse.

I guess that’s an unpopular opinion, but oh well 🤷‍♂️

I don't know if that's an unpopular opinion.  I share it (for the most part).  I didn't like the original away look (white over navy) at all, but white over light blue or even all white works for me.  I'm also more of a fan of the light blue home uniform with navy yoke rather than the reverse, but either would work for me.

The flaming-tack logo is a fine helmet logo.  The number font is also fine.  Not great, but fine.  Miles better than most of the overly-and-unnecessarily custom fonts we see today.

The myth of the titans has nothing whatsoever to do with flames and the sword logo with its straight rather than leaf shaped sides coming to sharply angled point more closely resembles a Roman gladius than it does an Greek Xiphos or Kopis (and if you think this nerd hasn't been holding onto that one for a quarter century think again).

BUT...

The above nitpicks don't really matter because the original Titans design got the memo about what make classics like Chicago, Green Bay, San Francisco, and Pittsburgh classics.

They had a satisfying color scheme that balanced its elements in reasonable proportions from the jersey down to the socks and didn't overburden itself with gimmicks. The jersey was a straight forward shoulder yoke with a contrasting collar (until the Nike template) with numbers on the shoulder and a logo on the sleeve. The pants had straight forward Brasier stripes and when they were worn in combos like navy over white or white over Columbia it worked really well.

The designers also knew that logo that can be viewed from the back of the helmet like the Eagles' wings, Vikings' horns, and Seahawks'... stripes(?) are visually striking. So they added some flames so you could see something from the back of the helmet and if you asked why they were there a simple, "It looks cool sufficed."

Was it ever on the same level as the Steelers or Bears? Of course not, but it was damn good.

I was initially very excited for the Titans new uni announcement years ago. Then the leaked happened and my excitement disappeared. After all these years, I really hope they get new unis for the new stadium and go to something closer to the original set. Less is more and nobody likes to see a jersey like it was a paint-by-numbers creation.

Lions doesn't contain an R

Also, I like the Titans' old look better with light blue as a primary, if only because navy is overused in all of sports

IT gives off soccer vibes. But it would only probably be good on the sleeves, or just on a workout T-shirt before the game.

Not sure why anyone would think that would be a good helmet logo.

I find it quite funny that now people are talking about how good those former Snatit uniforms were. (And they were good, in a World League kind of way.) Back before the cosplay, I remember so many people here and in other places railing on how "dated" or or played out those sets were, with several wishing for an update. WELP...

...That's just another example of "be careful what you wish for."

(Let this be a memo to those who keep railing about the Ravens or Eagles changing uniforms, too...I'll even throw the Broncos in here considering the response their new uniforms have been met with...)

These 2 combos specifically, with a less stupid helmet stripe and a less stupid number font could be a timeless classic.

I would actually be more of a mind to go with no stripes than anything conventional. What really worked about that helmet was the aforementioned flames wrapping around the back. The truncated stripes at least didn't interfere with that effect. You'd get stripes in front but unobstructed flames from the back.

usa_today_10497946.0.jpg

You can't really get that with the current helmet because the spike comes from the back cluttering up the view from that angle.

USATSI_17346066.jpg

I can't comment on the number font because A. I'm not sure how block numbers would fit into the shoulder yoke and B. a specific alternative doesn't leap to mind.
