Superbowl XLVIII

So the site of Superbowl XLVIII is down to either (surprise, surprise) tampa and south florida aka miami and the wild card new york/new jersey.

personally i'd like to see the stadium in NY/NJ, just because if would be nice for a change and interesting to see how the superbowl plays out in the cold climate. However with the next three SB in domes (dallas, indy and new orleans), it wouldn't seem as repetitive having the superbowl in florida compared to the recent trend (3 of the last 4 have been in the sunshine state).

Better yet, i'd enjoy the superbowl to be held in California - just feels good when at kickoff the sun is still shining and all. but, I guess the NFL has its own agenda.

Whats everyone else's thoughts?

I'd as well love to see the Super Bowl in California again. Problem is though, other than San Diego there really isn't a viable spot to put it. Candlestick is a dump and has horrible access problems. The Coliseum has a similar issue when it comes to the quality of the stadium, and I'm sure the thought of how bad the transportation lines would be jammed up is enough to scare the NFL and city officials away. Even San Diego isn't really a great option. There were TONS of problems with Super Bowl 37 and both city officials and the NFL have stated that there won't be another one there any tine soon.

well san fran is moving to santa clara in the future. they'll have a new park over there. and then you never know about a team in LA sometime in the future. So maybe a superbowl in california is that far away. but i agree with you about it not happening sometime soon.

Bring it to the Meadowlands. Joe Robbie, Pro Player, Dolphin, Landshark, Sun Life Stadium always gets it. The New Sombrero just had it.

I would also like to see it in a cold weather climate even if it is the only time it will be held outdoors, Hell maybe Lambeau, Qwest or Soldier Field could get in on the party if it's a success in the NY/NJ.

I'd be all for a cold weather outdoor site. Im glad to see the NFL is finally expanding its horizons beyond the traditional sites at least, and going to Dallas and Indy but those will be indoors. Seriously, does anyone think the NFL is going to have problems doing all its traditional fan / sponsor / media events going into the game with it being held outside NYC, even if it is freezing outside?

The one thing about it though is that Dan Synder is going to be all over getting a Super Bowl in the Meadowlands because he is going to try and use that as leverage to get DC to build him a new retractable roof barn so that he can get in on some Super Bowl shuffle action as well.

The NFL Championship should be played in conditions that are most likely to ensure the best performances out of all the players. Screw the romanticism of playing the game "as it was meant to be played". I want the weather to have as minimal an impact on the game as possible.

Along that same line, anyone notice that Atlanta isnt in the rotation anymore? Hasnt hosted a game in ten years because of an ice storm that hit the city during Super Bowl week 2000, even though the city handled the situation fine?

They should have the 50th Super Bowl at Lambeau due to the historic nature of both that particular game and the stadium itself.

Either that or Fawcett Stadium at the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Besides that, I don't really have a preference as to where Super Bowls should be played.

50th should be at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Unfortunately the Coliseum isn't up to "NFL Standards" anymore. Hence, No LA team yet. If the Coliseum was still viable, we'd have a team here 3 years ago.

Santa Clara goes to the polls on June 8 to decide Measure J for their "investment" into the stadium.

Overall, I really don't care who gets it, but will be watching NFL Network on Tuesday.

Is the Rose Bowl up to par for the NFL? I'd say if it's good enough for the BCS Title Game, it must have same standards for the NFL.

I thought the deal was that the Super Bowl could only be played in NFL facilities -- and NFL-liked facilities at that. It's the reason the Super Bowl won't be played in San Diego, San Francisco or Oakland. The NFL feels that, collectively, California could do better.

Right...when the NFL was in Los Angeles they had no problem with the Coliseum or Rose Bowl. But without that franchise, they won't go back.

If an NFL team played at the Rose Bowl you'd have seen a bunch more Super Bowls there...

The Rose Bowl is off the rotation for a few reasons.

1. The stadium has slightly over 50,000 chaired seats, the end zones are bleachers with no backs. You cannot charge someone $500 for a ticket sit on a metal bleacher. The link below illustrates the seating issue. Points of sale, concourses and restrooms are an issue. They had to build additional restroom pods on the concourse. (They also employ the waterless urinal.)

2. The stadium is a pain to get in and out of due to LA traffic and the fact that it is located in a residential area.

3. The last few Super Bowls have really tried to eliminate tailgating with using parking lots for concert stages, food vendors, and other activities. With the Rose Bowl's parking lot basically being the Brookside Golf Course, that would be difficult to patrol (terrorism threat aside) and program.

Now, they have a strategic plan which you can see here for the future of the stadium which includes club seating.

Yup, dead on. There is a good chance you will see rough conditions in the playoffs. That is plenty enough.

New Jerseys weather isn't that horrible in February, It would be a lot worse weather wise in Buffalo, New England, Green Bay, and Chicago. You are set with an under armour, northface jacket, 2 pairs of socks, a winter hat, and a pair of long johns on under your jeans. If you follow this you will be fine trust me, I am a Jet season ticket holder. I don't understand the horror of most likely 35 degree weather, for all you know NJ can be hit with one of those wild 50 degree weekends. If you're a football player you should be able to play in ANY weather.
