Gray mask + Non-gray team = automatic fail.

LONG live the grey facemask... its classy.

No it isn't. It clashes with most color schemes and only looks good on a select few teams who have worn them forever.

Okay, let's get this straight. Gray is the ultimate neutral. It doesn't clash with any color scheme. It recedes accordingly and gives the colors in the rest of the uniform greater dominance.

From what I gather they will look a lot like SMU, which is a great thing.

Red facemasks would work for the Bills I think.

SMU doesnt like this LOL.

I believe they are changing to red this season

You honestly think that gray looks good with, say, the Browns' color scheme? Especially without gray appearing anywhere else in the uniforms?

You really don't understand how to have an argument.

You said gray clashes.

AH explained that it doesn't clash because it is the "ultimate neutral".

You then reply that "you honestly think that gray looks good with..."

He never said that gray looks good with anything. Only that your use of the word clash was wrong. Another example of you jumping to an extreme with one of your arguments. Do you honestly wonder why you're seen as a total clown?

Grey works with some teams, but not with others. The Raiders, Cowboys, Giants, and Colts are all examples of teams that I feel look great with the grey masks. The 49ers and Bills on the other hand don't. In the Bills case it's strictly because I feel that a colored mask would make the entire set pop just that much more. The Bills would look better with a red or blue mask, but grey is still passable. The 49ers on the other hand, look atrocious with a grey mask and always have. There's something about that light gold and the way it works with the white stripe and red accent stripes that just screams red face mask to me. It looks SO out of place with a grey mask.

+1

why does it look good only on teams who havnt switched to a color mask? i said id rather see blue too, but it will grow on you. after some time it wont be an issue. 10 years from now they might wnt to go blue and opinions could change because its established some equity

but, i cant fault anyone for not liking it, we all perceive colors differently and have different taste.

So I've been thinking more about the "facemask = equipment" argument. Does any team that uses a gray facemask (where gray is not one of their colors) NOT wear black shoes? If you're a non-natural gray-mask team (AZ, CLE, BUF, etc.) then I think you should wear black shoes, because you're treating those things as equipment and not design. If every other part of your uniform (including shoes) is matched per design requirements and you still choose a gray mask, then that's just GFGS.

For the most part I think that gray masks look ridiculous. I think I can accept the Colts or any team where they only have one color + white (at least the gray adds something there) but I'd still prefer that they have a blue mask. Other than that, I can't think of a single non-natural gray-mask team that wouldn't be better off with a colored mask (exception being Cleveland.)

Also - IMO white masks are almost as bad as gray masks. Almost.

Chargers and Chiefs in 1974. Other teams rapidly followed:

1975: Browns, Broncos, Giants

1976: Bills, Saints

1977: Steelers

1978: Jets, Redskins, Colts, Falcons

1979:

1980: Bengals, Dolphins, Packers

1981: Oilers, Rams

1982: Patriots, Bears

1983: Seahawks

1984: Lions

Not even close

1974: Chiefs, Chargers, Broncos

1975: Browns, Giants

1976: Bucs, Falcons, Saints

1977: Bills, Steelers

1978: Jets, Colts, Redskins

unless you are going 100% retro to the gray facemask era you should use a colored mask...and in addition if you are doing a throwback to pre mask days (packers/bears) your mask should be the color of the shell

+1 to disliking white masks

Thanks. That about sums it up. But to answer Lights Out's question, yes, I think grey looks stunning with dark brown and bright orange. It's a great color scheme. Grey can be jarring on teams like the Vikings or Bears, who have very dark helmets, but I still think they look good in grey masks. I'm just not used to seeing it. I prefer either a grey mask, or a mask that is the same color as the helmet (when the helmet is dark, like navy blue, purple, or black).
