Hot Stove: MLB Offseason Thread

Texas' offense is still better no doubt. The Angels' offense last year was anemic at times, and they're trying to change that by getting rid of Mathis for Iannetta and bringing in Pujols. Angels have the advantage in pitching I think (Starting definitely, bullpen still needs a little more work), and with that pitching, the offense just needs to be better than last season. It doesn't need to be at Texas' level, but it just needs to be better than last year. Hopefully at least four runs a game. (Especially when you look at the Angels record last season when they scored 3 runs or less compared to more than 3. It was a ridiculous split.)

I'm not going out and crowning the Angels champions yet. Neither are most of the Angel fans I know. Are we excited and encouraged by these moves? Absolutely. But it's still going to be a dogfight with Texas all year. You look at the standings and the Angels were still in it until the last weekend, and then they kinda threw it in their final games. Do I think Pujols and Wilson make the Angels 3-5 games better than last year? I think so. But that just means it's still going to be that fight all season long. Honestly, I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm really looking forward to it.

Well, the Angels just signed a 20 year, 3 BILLION dollar TV deal with Fox Sports. Looks like the Angels are gonna be scary good for a good while.

Just saw it on ESPN, as well.

If the Angels can make that much money on television rights, I can't wait to see how much is going to come in for the Los Angeles team that even more people watch.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

Unless my eyes deceive me the Cubs are doing their best to assemble a bunch of random kind-of-hurt young dudes to play professional baseball next season. Somewhere in a dark room Bob Brenly is passing a bottle of whiskey to Len Kasper.

Well, the Dodgers auction should put their rights up again.

From earlier today (Friday 12/9/2011): Court grants Dodgers permission to sell tv rights early

Story-

The Los Angeles Dodgers can try to sell future television rights to the team?s baseball games months earlier than their current contract with Fox Sports allows, a judge ruled. U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Kevin Gross in Wilmington, Delaware, yesterday overruled Fox?s objection to letting the team negotiate with Fox?s competitors early. Gregory W. Werkheiser, an attorney for Fox, a unit of New York-based News Corp., said the company will appeal Gross?s ruling. In the next few days, Fox and the Dodgers will try to agree on whether negotiations for a new TV contract can begin immediately or must wait for an appeal. Time Warner Cable Inc. is likely to bid for the rights, partly because the company won the right to show future Los Angeles Lakers? basketball games on a new regional sports network.

Here is why Time Warner Cable is the key to a bid in excess of the FOX bid for LAA rights.

Story-

When News Corp.'s Fox Sports signed an agreement to carry Dodger games on its Prime Ticket regional sports network in 2004, it included a clause that prohibited the team from creating its own channel in partnership with Time Warner, Comcast Corp. or Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN. Now Time Warner Cable is trying to land the Dodgers for its new regional sports network and Fox is crying foul.

Here's the rub: When Fox signed its deal with the Dodgers in 2004, Time Warner Cable was a unit of Time Warner Inc. Five years later, Time Warner Cable was spun off from Time Warner, becoming its own publicly traded company.

It appears that Fox's contract with the Dodgers was not amended to reflect that Time Warner Cable is now a separate entity, said people familiar with the agreement who declined to speak publicly about the ongoing legal issue.

Time Warner Cable probably will make the case that the provision does not apply because it is a separate company from Time Warner. Fox probably will counter that the intent of the contract is clear and that there is no loophole for Time Warner Cable to exploit.

Fans are really dumb sometimes. You know that?

Also just read on twitter that Pujols' contract includes 10 year "personal services" commitment after he stops playing. Consult in front office, guest instructor in Spring Training, etc.

His Papacy, Pope Albert V, the first Pope from The Dominican, blesses his Legions of Angels and Angel Followers in Anaheim, CA. Following Mass, Pope Albert V thanked the College of Cardinals, errrrrr Los Angeles front office for electing him to lead the Angels for the next ten years. Oh yeah and the boatload of cash, "Much appreciated," said His Papacy, All-Star First Baseman and Two Time World Series Champion.

Wuh oh. Ryan Braun just got popped for hanging out with Jose Canseco too much.

Ryan Braun tests positive for PED. 50 game suspension likely.

They should strip him of his MVP title.

That would be great, but if you strip one person of an award, you have to do it for anyone else who used performance enhancers.

Not really. It's a lot easier to justify doing it if that person failed a drug test during the season in which they won the award.

Right, but I doubt it will be done retroactively, which is why I say all or none. Now they mighr institute a Shawne Merriman rule though, in which case I could see an award being taken away if this were to happen with a rule like that already instituted.
