They're busy doing all of that - but is it because they really need to, or because they're just poor delegators, or because they're just trying to act like they're all managerial and in control of everything? Honestly, your post represents what is wrong with America. There's certainly leadership skills and sports knowledge that's required to be a good coach, but jeezus - let's not put them on the same level as brain surgeons or CEOs or anything. It's coaching football. You can make absolutely horrible decisions, but get bailed out if your player is just faster than the other team's player. It's kind of funny how some of these guys walk around acting like they're managers in a business, when many of them have no real-world experience in anything besides telling big sweaty meaty guys to hit the other team's big sweaty meaty guys harder, and "LEAVE IT ALL ON THE FIELD!".

They aren't brain surgeons, but they make a lot more money than brain surgeons. While they aren't providing the same benefit to society, they do have a lot of pressure on them to win. The game is about putting 11 guys in the right spots for each play. While it's not brain surgery, it can be extremely complex. If they think putting in an extra hour studying their opponent's defense will help them win, they will do so. Football is about strategy much more than any other sport. You can get by soley on having talented players in college and in lower conferences, but the talent level at the top of BCS conferences and in the NFL isn't drastically different among the teams, and you need good strategy in order to win. I mean, look at Ron Zook's career. He was able to pull-in top talent, but because he was a terrible coach, he was fired from two jobs. I'm not saying coaches should work 20 hour days, but you are, once again, marginalizing something with hyperbole. It's not exactly like hitting "simulate game" on PS3, and if it were, coaches wouldn't be paid millions of dollars.

I kind of want to say something, but it would venture into the "dfwabel has become more of a downer than BBTV" and stray from the "Paterno/PSU is a creepy, horrible thing."

Just say it, I really do not care.

If this Penn State case concerning 'state action' destroys the NCAA, I would appreciate what those at Penn State did. Most of us would agree that the NCAA system is broken. Any cause which could impact the NCAA's oversight I am in favor of, especially if it involves 'state action'.

Then you have a seriously messed up sense of priorities.

Well since the NCAA already won the first case regarding them not being state actors I wouldn't bet on them losing the second. Not with the conservative court that's in place.

You are not a judge or even a constitutional law attorney.

Way to go, you've just destroyed message boards. Now the only posts we can have will be GFB on sports logos and Mings on architecture.

I run a mean cash register. If a convenience store thread ever pops up, I've got it covered.

I'm gonna start a radio thread so you and I can have our own little pants party.

Problem is, I don't trust the Universities themselves to handle these affairs. If anything, the Paterno case offers ample proof of that to this day.

I have been a vocal critic of the NCAA at times, but there are some things that really ought to be handled by a centralized body.

What you'd probably see happen is something similar to what happened in English Soccer a couple of decades ago. The major schools would break away and set up their own governing association to provide a fig leaf of non-profitness.

Well, the Premer League clubs didn't really break away from the Football Association, since their new league was part of, and run by, the FA.

I don't know. You could be right about the big schools (I would say big conferences more likely) creating their own association. And in any case, I don't trust a single school to govern itself.

I think it would be the right thing for the power conferences to split off and operate among themselves, actually. Like I said in the college-v-NFL thread, it's silly and a bit unacceptable that college teams spend half their seasons playing against Boxcar State or whoever else is either de jure ineligible to compete for a national championship (D1A) or merely de facto (mid-majors), which makes the games kind of pointless. You would think that college fans would love a college football season where every game really does matter (they claim they do now with the whole one-loss-and-your-season-is-over conceit, but those games tend to matter only for one team), but apparently everyone really gets off on beating up small directional-state schools with small fractions of their own recruiting/operational budgets.

Could you imagine how f'ed up the NFL would be if wins and losses didn't matter, the playoffs were done away with, and writers and coaches got to vote on plays for the Lombardi Trophy? It would Be Dallas/Green Bay vs. New England/Pittsburgh every friggin year!

What I love about the NFL is that eventhough there are still powerhouses and dynasties, entering each season EVERY TEAM HAS A CHANCE. (unless you're the Browns, of course. :P)

If ESPN were voting, Super Bowl 47 would feature Tim Tebow vs. Mark Sanchez.

Really? The school actually let their ignorant little punk students create something like that?

Yeah. Have you ever set foot in a student bookstore at a major state school before?

Wait, so PSU is allowing a shirt that bashes the NCAA to be sold in their school run book store? If it was an independent store, than that's one thing, but the official, school run book store? That's like getting your ass kicked by Mike Tyson and still talking s**t while you're lying on the ground bleeding as he walks away. At first I was mostly indifferent to all of this, but with PSU getting a really tame punishment and STILL appealing it, and now this, I really hope the NCAA drops the hammer (and sikcle) on Penn State's head.

See what I mean about Penn State still not "getting it"? At least if they got the death penalty, we wouldn't be subjected to this defiant crap in the national media because there'd be no football games to broadcast and talk about.
