Chawls Posted October 1, 2012 Share Posted October 1, 2012 Yeah. It's THAT time of the year again, when teams sport pink accessories in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. Worthy cause notwithstanding, we here in CCSLC discuss, amongst many other topics, the importance and significance of team colors. Now by admission, I'm primarily a football guy. I don't know what teams in other sports do for October, but I know that at every level of football, there are teams that sport pink accessories during this time of the year. My old high school wears pink shoelaces. So here is your thread to discuss all things involving the pink. Do you like it? Dislike it? What's the best shade of pink? Does it actually look good with some teams' colors? Has pinkwashing jumped the shark? Is the display of support misguided? Is pinkwashing even the best way to support Breast Cancer Awareness? And that's precisely why this self-promotion is a very bad idea. I'm glad they're raising awareness, I'm even more glad they're raising money, but let it stop at the sideline. officeglenn Posted October 2, 2012 Share Posted October 2, 2012 I've always thought some NFL teams look really good with the pink accessories, usually ones that primarily have dark colours on the other side of the spectrum from pink. Today, when news came out that Chuck Pagano was diagnosed with leukemia, many suggested a "pink out" completely ignoring the fact that the color associated with leukemia is orange.I guess, what I'm trying to say, and it's a tough argument to make, is that I don't see why breast cancer is more worthy of a cause than any other cancer. Hell, the NFL is a football league, where men play. Men who are nearly infinitely more likely to get another form of cancer, most likely prostate cancer. So why doesn't the NFL raise awareness for prostate cancer like they do for breast cancer? The top prostate cancer charities take in 10% of what the top breast cancer charities take in despite there being a similar number of those who have prostate cancer to those that have breast cancer. In no way shape or form is breast cancer an unworthy cause - in fact, it is a worthy one - but at the same time, I feel there are ones that are just as worthy or more worthy but simply don't get the attention because they're not "sexy." It looks totally ridiculous and is such an insane contradiction for a league that claims to have such brand integrity. A small patch is ok, or if you have to do the "pink out" thing, do it for one week and be done with it. It annoyed me as it was, but last year it really sent me over the edge when the league forced teams to wear pink accessories less than a month after it was fining players tens of thousands of dollars for wearing gear in tribute to the ten year anniversary of 9/11. I'm pretty much against these types of tributes as it is, but there is none more egregious than this one. Instead of showing off their support by dressing their players like Barbies for a month, they should be cutting a check to an organization that equals the amount of money they blow on this s****y looking merchandise for their players in the first place. It has done Nothing but turned the concept of chairty into Shameless act self promotion and Financial Enrichment for a Corrupt Organization and its Corporate Sponsors that take the extreme lazy route to gin up some feelgood PR and pretend that they are behind some sort of charitable cause.If individuals truly want to get off their assess and support a Cause, they will actually take a few minutes to do some homework and Donate time or money to organizations that Directly Fund Research.Buying a pink blender or wearing an article of pink clothing does nothing but put money in the pockets. This pink-washing is the epitome of marketing completely run amok and completely corrupted the concept of charity.Remember Awareness does nothing to help any charitable causes. But I will admit I have bought alot of my pink stuff because it look's cool, although alot of the proceeds go to Breast Cancer awareness, and players auction off there gear for Breast Cancer. It also gets people talking about Breast Cancer and can gain a persons interest of researching this horrible cancer.
