Jared Allen is a tool...but he's a football player, so...

I never had trouble cheering for him.

Word on the street is the eagles may settle for a 4th round pick for Deshawn Jackson if they can't move him before draft day. Unbelievable.

Also, all-pro guard Evan Mathis asked for a raise from his $5M deal he signed last year, and the team said FU, we'll trade you too.

So a 1,300 yard receiver and a lineman that some called the best in the NFL over the past 2 seasons can be had for next to nothing.

Who do you think is more valuable? I think its a bigger deal if they trade Mathis. The team finally has a solid offensive line again. Call me crazy, but I think Jackson is replaceable.

Hard to say, because it's so hard to fairly grade linemen, especially guards / centers. I mean "experts" say he's great, and he was all-pro (not just pro bowl), but considering they have McCoy and now Sproles back there, maybe they'd be fine without him - I really have no idea. Unless a guard is constantly getting blown up and letting the QB get sacked, when do you ever really watch them? It's pretty much just assumed that guards and centers on good running teams are good. I have no idea if he's great or not. It's a lot different than tackle, where it's easier to tell good from average.

"They" say everything starts with the line, so by that reasoning, he's a key player and would be the priority.

Then again, Jackson is a game changer. He's one of only a few receiver that other teams specifically game plan to stop. He frees up space and allows for others to shine (not that he wants others to shine, it's just a byproduct of the double coverage and other attention he gets.) Besides him, they have Maclin, who is on a 1 year deal and didn't play last year due to ACL. Who knows if he's OK. Riley Cooper sucks - he fits in only with a guy like Jackson freeing him up.

So while Jackson is technically "replaceable", it wouldn't be easy - they'd have to draft a top-notch guy, and even then hope that Jeremy Maclin is OK. Chip Kelly says he can plug anyone in to any position and his offense will be successful, but at the end of the day, talent wins, and while Evan Mathis may be the best guard in the league, the gap between Jackson's talent and an average WR's talent is IMO greater than the gap between Mathis' talent and an average guard's.

So I'd keep Jackson. Not that it matters - I think it's 90% that Jackson is gone, and 60% Mathis is gone.

This clip best explains the NFL's decision to outlaw goalpost dunking.

I'm actually gonna defend the NFL.

  1. Jimmy Graham's self-interest is only exceeded by his ability to disappear in the playoffs
  2. His stupid celebration was already done better for many years by Tony Gonzalez, who to my knowledge never caused a delay of game by screwing up the goalpost
  3. With the goalposts getting taller and having more weight/potential for being lopsided, this showboating fantasy stat-hoarding doofus can certainly fill the NFL's coffers every time he decides to act like a jackass

You're just hating on Jimmy Graham, not "defending the NFL".

It is what it is.

I believed I accomplished both!

I can't believe Roger Goodell hasn't had done anything to eliminate regular season overtime games ending in a tie! Tie games in regular season sports are starting to become irrelevant! But the NFL might be one of the only professional leagues in America in where we have games that end with one winning or losing! Tie games may have a minor benefit in soccer, but in the NFL? There is none!

Jared Allen is one of the best cases of guys that you hate when they're on another team, but love if he's playing on your team. Pretty excited about this signing.

I'm normally against "carnival games" like the Shootout in the NHL, but I can't say I wouldn't be really excited to see a college style overtime in the NFL.

I think I'm one of the few that really likes the college overtime system. Maybe move it back some for the NFL since the kickers are so good, but I think being in scoring position every posession (and the second team knowing exactly what they need to do to either win or keep themselves alive) is pretty dramatic. The argument is that it's not "true to the game" because it takes some of special teams out of it, but that's already happening with the way they're tinkering with kickoffs.

While NFL overtime games are rare, the NCAA overtime system will cause someone to hit a performance bonus which they would not have due to additional OT redzone possessions.

That is an easy problem to solve.

In other off-season news, the Eagles are reportedly so done with DeShawn Jackson that they may just release him and take whatever cap hit it would be. This coming a day after he tweeted a pic of himself and Chip Kelly while telling fans that everything was OK. I'm not sure what he did, but for him to be dangled for a 4th round pic and possibly even released, he must have literally crapped in someone's cereal. He's way better than Percy Harvin, who went for what - a 1st rd pick right?

A first and a seventh in last years draft, and then I think a third or fourth rounder this year as well. And Harvin had a history of injuries as well. Those whole situation seems pretty crazy, really.

Edit: Just looked it up, a first and seventh in 2013, a third in 2014. And the Eagles can't even get a fourth for Jackson? The only thing I can think of is that teams are just laying off knowing it'll eventually come down to him being released.

He has a big cap number this year I think, but despite what most of the idiot fans think, the eagles aren't cheap and gave plenty of cap room, so he and/or his new agent most have really pissed them off. Of course new agent doesn't get a cut of old contract so there's that motivation too.

SEA established their own market for Harvin who is younger than Jackson. Personally, I would take the younger player. PHI still needs McCoy under a reasonable contract until they find their QB.

This is a very WR deep draft.
