Hey thanks, hormone. I appreciate that. Not sure why it won't accept PMs. Hmm, gonna have to look I to that.

I'll host em, because they're worth it. I couldn't wrap my head around what that material could possibly be, but now I'm letting out a pretty big groan after seeing it up close, because the numbers somehow got even dumber than they already were. There is nothing unique about the material they used for this at all. It's basically runners safety vest material. How lame.

I don't mean to knock on your jersey, either. Just the brand.

Wow. That's...wow. So all this time they had people thinking they came up with some revolutionary material...when all it was is the same reflective material I use on the job on a daily basis? I mean hell, why didn't they just co-opt and incorporate blaze orange along with it to complete the look--that've been just the Nike-est thing to do, anyway, and it certainly wouldn't be any worse than what they have now. And what's with the perforation-looking pattern going on with the white/top layer of the numbers? Or is that just something for retail versions of the jersey?

Man did they screw the pooch on this identity overhaul. Like, bad.

The same pattern is on the on field jerseys. For what reasons we will never know

I think the helmet sticker should be so big that it covers the entire earth and just kills us all. That'd definitely be better than having to watch the Bucs take the field in these monstrosities.

Ahahahaha! thats hilarious!

In all seriousness, I have to admit that I can't help but feel that some people sound like complete old farts with some of their commentary and hatred for this set. I've seen uniforms that are 1000 times worse than these, and they never got this type of hate. They are not that bad...they may not be THAT good either, but I can live with them and I actually like them.

I'm just surprised at how strongly people are reacting towards a uniform set that really isn't that innovative and different from many other rather normal and tame more modern uniforms (outside of the ultra stylzed numbers). You would think that their previous set was an untouchable masterpiece or something. I honestly found them to be a boring, dark, complete muddy mess...but thats just me. Its still funny to read the comments though, I was laughing out loud at this entire page.

Their old set was, IMO, the closest thing sports aesthetics had to an untouchable masterpiece. That's a personal opinion, and some may disagree, but it was by far my favorite look in any sport. It's part of the reason I even became a Bucs fan and a logo geek in the first place. Knowing it's gone and will never return is definitely a big part of my problem with the current set. But the other part of my problem with the new set is that it's an absolute travishamockery of miserable ideas all rolled into one.

:censored: this new set.

The bucs redesign has some good ideas but both the bucs and JAGS are the epitome of over-design. They simply embellished every element of the uniform they could until they became cluttered, gaudy messes. Sometimes less is more in design and good designs show restraint.

Who cares what type of material is used for the reflective numbers. Why does that even matter?

Yeah, this is another example of the ridiculous negative hyperbole this set gets.

Sorry, no. It's not that we think the material is an issue (though reflective material on a sports uniform is in and of itself a travesty, in my opinion). It's that Nike made it an issue. Nike can't go a single press release without talking up their new materials and how "innovative" they are. When you make yourself out to be a genius who only uses state of the art space age materials the gods themselves dared not fathom expect to be ridiculed when it's revealed that you're using material widely used on safety garments.

I suspect that many people are simply reacting to the unique and somewhat odd looking number font.

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. I find the whole "I think people are just ______" attitude to be rather arrogant. As if the person saying it assumes what the people who disagree with them REALLY think.

I think this new set is garbage, and the number font is only one of many reasons why. Basically I see this change as irredeemable because each change from the previous set strikes me as a downgrade.

The colours: People say "well they're brighter now!" Yes, they are. They do "pop" more, but that's a bad thing, in my opinion. The Bucs' last set was thematically consistent. Yes, it was a bit on the dark side, but the dirty, grungy look fit the pirate theme perfectly. The deep, dark crimson evoked blood, and thus the logo had the look of a blood stained banner. The new brighter red doesn't work as well because it's too "clean."

The new pewter is also a downgrade. The old metallic pewter looked great. The new matte pewter looks like a really dark brown. It doesn't look like pewter at all to me.

The new emphasis on the orange also bugs me. It was never a huge part of the last set, which is what made it work. It was limited to striping and number outlines, and was almost an Easter egg those who noticed it. A subtle reference to the Bucco Bruce days hiding inside of a new, different scheme.

The logos: The old logos were perfect. Grungy, yet simple enough to be bold. The old skull looked like it came off a treasure map, as others have said. The old flag was a deep blood red, which gave it the appearance of being either blood stained or a flag of war. The tattered nature definitely helped. The new skull looks like a generic version of the metallic Terminator skull. Like something you'd find if you Googled "robotic skull clipart." It doesn't strike me as very pirate like at all.

The new alternate continues the theme of looking more like an illustration and less like a logo. It's a nice picture of a pirate ship. The old version was a better logo, however.

The new wordmark is ok. It's nice enough, it just looks a bit too clean. The previous workmark looked grungy. Fitting the pirate theme. It wasn't all that polished. The new one suffers by being too perfect.

The placement is also pointlessly weird. Why is the wordmark on one sleeve? It doesn't improve the look of the uniform. It's just different for the sake of it. Which almost never works.

The helmet: I never liked the oversized logo trend in the NCAA, and I was a bit peeved to see it in the NFL. It just looks goofy and gimicky to me. Not like something a pro team should be doing. The random black streaks add nothing to the look, and the chrome facemask is, again, different for the sake of being different. The black facemask was subdued. It didn't stand out. The chrome mask? It stands out by design.

The jerseys: Others have said the yoke isn't that egregious. I don't have a problem with the element in and of itself, I just don't like execution here. First and foremost, I find it to be a downgrade from the beautiful simplicity of the previous look. The old look pulled off a better look doing less, in my opinion. Back to the yoke though. I've never minded the Titans' look, and this seems a bit too similar to that. Shoulder yoke, square-ish font. The Titans, though, pull it off better. The Bucs' yoke seems to "flair" out a bit more, while the Titans' keeps it simple and straight.

I'm also not a fan of using pewter on the jerseys. First, it looks brown because of the matte materials. Secondly, pewter worked so well before because it was a unique metallic colour that was used the same way silver is so often used throughout the league. The Dallas Cowboys and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, for example, had uniforms that followed the same pattern. The metallic colours were confined to the helmets and pants, and that's what made both looks work. The metallic colours weren't overused in either. They provided a solid backbone for the set. The new jersey includes pewter and overexposes it, in my opinion.

The pants: I suppose I prefer the new Bucs/Jags style pants to the tapered stripes that began with the Broncos. Still don't like them though. They're just blocks of colour floating without purpose.

Number font: It is, in and of itself, an ugly font that is inferior to the standard block font it replaced in every way. Not only is it ugly, but its futuristic styling clashes with the pirate theme. Nike claimed they were meant to mimic "traditional buccaneer sword carvings," a claim that's disproven buy a simple Google search. Nothing about this font work.

The previous set may have been a traditional football look, but it managed to stand out because it was executed so well. The template was straightforward, but that was genius of it. The colour scheme was unique and the logos were full of character. Those were more then enough to give it a unique look. The basic template and block numbers allowed those elements to carry the uniform. It wasn't crammed full of elements competing for the viewer's attention. It was unique in its simplicity.

So yeah. There you have it. A thorough summary of why I find the new Buccaneers uniforms to be terrible.

On the other hand, who else has been able to use that material on a jersey before and make it through a game after wear and tear? Still have to give them props for that minus the B.S press talk . If you are still complaining and not used to it after YEARS of hearing it idk what else to tell ya. The average consumer will have no idea, only the people here will really see through it

It holds up on construction sites, and running vests, its reasonable to assume that it really didn't take that much effort to get the material to work on a jersey. It's just no one else thought about doing such a rediculous idea.

This says it all, and sums it up perfectly. I can honestly say I pretty much agree with every single point.

It's not "just the font"... that is the worst font in professional sports, but even with a good font, this is an awful uniform.

It's not "old farts hate new things"... in this case its more like "old farts and young farts both hate crappy design".

If you like it, great. But no matter how many times you try to say it, the hate this is getting is not about "piling on" and its not hyperbole. It's just not. What it is is good old fashioned, well-earned, well deserved, hatred, OK? I hate this uniform because I think it sucks. Period.

That material is not new at all it is called 3M and nike puts it on tons of shoes, beginning with the tongue of the Air Jordan 5. With that said I love the material but think that it's use here is maybe a little cheesy I still hate the set, although not as much as I did when I first saw them.

What kills me about the use of the 3M reflective material on this jersey and the idea that it is new or revolutionary is that the University of Colorado football team used it as early as 2007. (P.S. I own this jersey, It's game used and the material is the exact same as on the Bucs numbers.)

As somebody who does have that stuff on his uniform, it gets much less shiny after a time. I'm curious to see if the Bucs uniforms look any different by the end of the year. It may or may not get to the tipping point by then.

Thank you.

"Traditionalists only like those uniforms for nostalgia" or "people that don't like Oregonesqe treatment of college uniforms don't like innovation" is basically saying "those with uniform tastes different than mine are wrong."

Disclaimer: If this comment is about an NBA uniform from 2017-2018 or later, do not constitute a lack of acknowledgement of the corporate logo to mean anything other than "the corporate logo is terrible and makes the uniform significantly worse."

Nope, me too. Always struck me as derivative of the 49ers but without the cachet. They should have re-embraced their creamsicle past instead of trying to re-imagine the Dungruden set. I mean, matte pewter, WHO THINKS OF THIS.

Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.

The new set isn't terrible because it's different, it' terrible because it's a terrible design and design concept. As Cappie poined out, there are too many design contradictions. For instance, why is there shadowing on the skull on the flag? Did pirates way back when follow Fraser Davidson's tutorials? And it's solely within the skull and not across the flag which not only makes it inappropriate time period-wise, but actually implies that the image is seperate from the flag. It's clear that everything was done for the sake of change and not with the goal of making a strong design identity.
