Ya'lls crazy. Portillo's is far above replacement-level. Al's is close, but not as good. I've never been to Buona, and I've never had Italian beef from a mom-and-pop place which was close to Al's or Portillo's. Since the small places are likely ordering their beef and sauce from the same vendors, I can't imagine them being that different or better than the chains. I will give the nod to Al's for their fries and giardiniera, though.

As for deep dish, I agree with Gino's over Giordano's, but I've never had Malnati's. But I'm not huge on deep dish, so whatever.

I feel like I have to actually try Portillos in the Chicago area, because I suspect that Arizona, like they do with most things, kinda runs it.

Giordanos is a place my buddy basically dragged me to when I was in Chicago insisting it was amazing and I walked away wondering what, exactly, the fuss was all about.

EDIT: Oh yeah, ice hockey.

I guess Aurelio's is fairly average as far as thin crust goes, but I have an emotional connection to it, having lived near the original in Homewood and eaten it more than any other pizza. Plus, I like green peppers on mine, and Aurelio's parboils or sautees theirs before baking the pizza, which is so much better than raw, crunchy peppers.

As far as the local stands go, I grew up in a town with a large Italian community, so I always had a couple places in town that made a great beef, plus pepper & egg sandwiches on Fridays. The "Combo" (an Italian beef with an Italian sausage link, for the uninitiated) is fairly standard practice, but one place had the "Whopper," which was an Italian sausage and meatball sandwich with marinara, mozzarella, and peppers. Mercy.

Momentarily On-Topic: Congrats to Patrick Kane on his first road game without rape chants from the crowd. We're about 85% of the way to collectively completely forgetting anything ever happened or how the Blackhawks handled it.

I'm curious as to what is the ideal solution for this? It's been awhile since there's been any word on settlements or this not going to trial or what, so that aside what should the Blackhawks do? I'm assuming you're like me in that he shouldn't be playing, much less available to the public until this thing is over.

Yeah, that's what I thought they should do. But it doesn't matter what I think, because the Blackhawks' approach has been 100% effective. Trot him out for 10 minutes of opaque awkwardness in South Bend, and then, literally, before he's even walked out of the room, press the mental reset button, tell the assembled that it's all about hockey now, and act like absolutely nothing's going on.

Sure, there's been strident criticism from outside voices, but they don't matter. Kane's been front-and-center for PR appearances, under the spotlight hooking up the banner, and modeling new merchandise in an online campaign for the team store. The team isn't losing a dime or a fraction of a ratings point - they might actually get more money from those who think that fifty thousand Kane jerseys can't be wrong - and all they had to do was let him say he didn't do it, then act like all that matters is that he said didn't do it.

Personally, I'm not as invested in Hawks games this season, and I genuinely don't like watching Patrick Kane score and celebrate. And hey, he's been doing plenty of that early, and could be the NHL's Player of the Month. And if he is, the league will announce it with the same amount of coverage and celebratory language they would for any other player.

But, like I said, whether I think that Patrick Kane probably raped a woman and whether the Blackhawks handled their response poorly does not matter at all. Rapist on the team or not, I'm never spending 4 or 5 figures on season tickets. I'm never dropping $150 a night on parking and concessions at United Center. And even if I don't watch Hawks games as much, Rocky's still getting a chunk of my cable bill from the team's deal with Comcast, and the league's deal with NBC. At some point this year or next, the Erie County DA's office will announce charges won't be pursued, there will be two, maybe three days of people talking about it, the outrage ouroboros will fade away from the view of most people, and, barring further, worse things (or maybe even including them), the entire crapshow will forever be referred to only as Patrick Kane's Occasional Off-The-Ice Issues. Go Hawks.

Yeah, I can't imagine it would be nearly as good as the locations in Chicago.

RE: Combos - the food of the Gods. A Portillo's combo, dipped with giardiniera and mozzarella is incredible, but something I'm lucky to get once a year. I've never been big on meatballs, for some reason, and the physical makeup of a sausage and meatballs sandwich sounds too cumbersome to eat. If you've got to eat it with a fork, it's not a sandwich.

As for Aurelio's green peppers, that sounds interesting. I'm not huge on green peppers on pizza, but I'd like to try that. And of course, you've got to add the fresh garlic.

In general, I agree that a sandwich should be finger food. Occasionally, though, a sandwich created deliberately for consumption with a fork can be good. The key is deliberation, if it's just a hot mess that can't be contained to the bread/bun, forget it.

The Whopper definitely fell into the hot mess category, though that also could have something to do with the fact that I was 8 or 9 and trying to tackle this sauce-slathered monstrosity.

Wow, Flyers fans have taken it far...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J19AOEQXDnA

this is also the same city that booed santa claus so nothing new.

A guy who appeared to be intoxicated dressed as Santa Claus. The guy deserved to be booed. It also happened almost 50 years ago. I am not an Eagles fan but I am a sports fan from the Philadelphia area. I hate how that story still epitomizes the Philadelphia fan. Granted, I have been to my fair share of Flyers games where the fans are ruthless but it is no different than anywhere else in the Northeast, like Boston or New York.

Real talk: at least ten people chanting in that video once raped someone

This is probably true.

Slow days for the NHL anti thread, I see...

Like pieces of a Lou Malnati's pizza in my midst, those never last.

I finally had Lou Malnati's on Friday. It was glorious. It was halfway cold by the time I got it home, but it was still well worth the wait. The location I went to is only carry-out, so I might stoop to picking up a pizza and eating it in in the parking lot at some point.

As I've gotten older, I've realized just how true that statement is. So even though I momentarily giggle at a douchebag getting a not-so-gentle reminder of his supposed wrongdoings, the stone cold truth is so much more depressing.

I don't really care for deep-dish in the way that so many Chicagoans apparently do, but if you're going to go down that route - which sounds really messy - you can do like a guy I knew back in high school and have raw cookie dough in the glove compartment. No really, he was taking to a friend of mine, paused, opened up the glove, took a bite like it was an apple, then just put it back. I was like, "Um, aren't you like, supposed to keep that refrigerated? Y'know, cause of the eggs and junk?" Alas, it never seemed to bother him.

Or better yet, just get a family member to drive you home.

We have a new Hurricanes family this year:

I dug up last years picture for reference.

So judging by the new pictures stick man left his wife and children, started stalking some girl with his telescope, started dating her, had a couple of kids and started getting stuck going to Canes games with them and the rest of her family. I'm guessing the last picture is them celebrating the Canes winning the draft lottery, since there is no other reason for them to celebrate anything else at that rink.
