On yesterday's episode of Harry Connick, Jr.'s talk show, the host did a segment in which he read a real news headline, and then did some musical joke while sitting at the piano.  One of the headlines was "New Orleans AAA baseball team changes name to 'Baby Cakes'".  After that one, Connick (a New Orleans native) basically stopped the bit, and said something to the effect of "No joke for this one; it's just a bad idea".

A franchise in the new independent Southwest League of Professional Baseball has unveiled its identity. The team, which will play in a proposed multi-purpose facility in the Waco, Texas suburb of Bellmead, will be dubbed the Waco BlueCats.

The team's name pays homage to the largest species of North American catfish, a favorite of anglers fishing the Brazos River and Lake Waco. BlueCats beat out four other possible team names: Woolies, Mammoths, Peppers, and Grackles.

Indoor Football team in Evansville, Indiana were the "Evansville BlueCats". It's a decent name and imagery.

Though it's clear the Waco BlueCats did it much better. And I really like the hook W, nice touch.

Seriously, when an independent team (essentially three tiers down) is rolling out a superior identity than Trip-A...the MiLB needs to get their act together.

Thunder Bay Lynx - International Hockey Association (2 seasons, 2017-18, 2019-20, 2018 Xtreme Cup Champions)Houston Armadillos - Major League Hockey (2 seasons, 2016-18) | Minnesota Muskies - North American Basketball Association (1 season, 2017-2018) | Louisville Thoroughbreds - United League of Baseball (1 season, 2017, 2017 United Cup Champions) | Las Vegas Thunderbirds - International Basketball League (1 season, 2016-17, 2017 Champions)

Could it be? Could this be the pivotal moment we needed? When a small, independent team puts out a more respectable and cohesive look than recent outlandish teams... Could it be a small spark to ignite us back to 'Normal' Minor League quirkiness?

"The 0-2 pitch... SWING AND A MISS! STRUCK HIM OUT! THE PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES ARE 2008 WORLD CHAMPIONS OF BASEBALL!"

Where's my swinging BlueCat??? You'd think the "pros" would know how to design a good identity, but alas...

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

The Northwest League logo is pretty nice...

The Midwest League logo looks like it was designed on PowerPoint: "Give us 90s Anaheim Angels and a lot of Copperplate".

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

The Bridgeport Bluefish, one of the two remaining original teams of the independent Atlantic League, released their 20th Anniversary logo, despite it being their 20th season, not 20th anniversary (which would be 2018).

I haven't liked most of the recent tweaks to the Bluefish identity - they introduced racing stripes to their home unis last year that just did not fit, and have started using an awful looking "Fish" wordmark - but I actually really like this logo. It fittingly uses elements of their identity that have been there since the start in 1998 (except the font, though it's an attractive font anyway):

It's somewhat remarkable that they've made it to their 20th season, and I can't help but think that the so-called "20th anniversary" celebrations might be doubling as a potential farewell, if they do wind up leaving Bridgeport (or folding) in the next couple of years. It's probably why they're celebrating this season, rather than next year. There may not be a next year. Their attendance plummeted in the mid-2000s, and they've been near last in attendance in the Atlantic League for over a decade now. There were talks about moving to Yonkers a few years back, but those thankfully fell through.

Bridgeport is the only remaining mid-size struggling and/or post-industrial city left in the Atlantic League, which used to be the league's bread and butter. Gone are Newark, Camden, Atlantic City, Nashua, Newburgh... the league found that teams placed in prosperous outer suburbs or exurbs would make more money. (Well, other than the league's entry into New Britain last year, I suppose.)

As a side note, the first ballgame I ever attended was the second Bluefish game ever back in 1998. Their entry into Bridgeport, along with the magic 1998 Yankees season, and the McGwire/Sosa HR chase, are what got me into baseball.

Overall this is an upgrade. But that bull doesn't look right. Seems like it has a pacifier in its mouth.
