The Lansing Lugnuts do not need to dress like the Toronto Blue Jays. The Burlington Bees do not need to ditch yellow for red to mimic the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. The Chicago Wolves do not need to dress like the St. Louis Blues. The Kane County Cougars sure as hell do not need to dress like the Arizona Diamondbacks. You would do well to refrain from speaking in absolutes on your sartorial preferences.

And yet... the Bees straight up wore Angels BP uniforms last year one game a week:

Seems to be a new trend in the Midwest League last year. The Clinton LumberKings wore Mariners Monday unis recolored from green and black to teal and navy:

Contrast that with the Royals giving the Kane County Cougars green and gold KC caps a few years (and a couple affiliates) back.

Affiliates change too often to ditch the hometown brand for the parent club's. One offs and alts can do the trick... or a patch on the sleeve. They already wear MLB jackets, etc.

The Great West League Yuba City ball club will be named the Yuba City Bears. I couldn't find a good pic, and their website is under construction, but they have the new logos on the Gold Sox Facebook page (the Bears will be sharing the Gold Sox Stadium and team offices).

I worked in that league this past year. The logo set and colors, for the most part, are terrific. I'm sort of a sucker for a number of '90s-type aesthetics, so I find the Charlotte Hornets-esque colorway very refreshing. I can't wait to get a glimpse of the uniforms.

However, I'm not a huge fan of the roundel logo. It looks too much like a Boy Scouts patch (or something of that nature), and not enough like part of a baseball team's identity. That being said, there's a good chance that a simple font change (that stock Microsoft font reeks of slapped-together clipart) could turn that logo around in one fell swoop.

Also, their third logo (the "YC"), which I'm sure will adorn the caps, is shown in this photo. It's a winner, IMO:

Well-timed for the recent debate here on whether minor league clubs should be carbon copies of their parent club or have unique identities reflecting the community they play in, here's a team that has managed to incorporate both into their identity (very successfully, in my opinion):

The Memphis jersey script shows as a neon sign quite nicely, and without being garish. Very nice.

Agreed. I'd love to see these jerseys up close to get a better view of how they achieved that effect.

Not to get too off topic, but the new Memphis Redbirds package makes me wonder what could have been for the Vegas G* Knights. Desert Knights or Neon Knights (or just plain Knights) could have been absolutely gorgeous with this kind of approach.

I agree. These are really sharp and I love the neon sign effect.

In the recent conversation, I don't think the question of "carbon copies" ever came up.  (Even though I do admire the teams that take this approach, such as the Paw Sox used to do.)

The position that I took up in that debate was that an observer should be able to identify a minor league team's parent organisation at a glance.  I further argued that this standard does not prevent a minor league team from having its own identity, supporting this assertion with examples from the histories of the Buffalo Bisons, the Syracuse Chiefs, and the Tidewater Tides.

This Memphis Redbirds uniform set provides more support for that viewpoint.  Though we should note that the Redbirds' nickname, unlike those of the Bisons, Chiefs, or Tides, is tied to the parent club's identity. (For a while, the team was actually owned by the Cardinals, Braves-style.)

In the case of this Memphis team, the separate identity resides entirely in the city name, and the inextricable association that that city has with music. This uniform set gives prominence to the thing that ties the Redbirds to the Cardinals (the bird), while also featuring music-related elements (the notes on the M logo; the neon which is reminicent of a honky-tonk bar).  And it does this by means of a beautiful wordmark and cap logo.  Excellent.

Excellent update, though my one criticism is not putting the awesome "Redbirds" script on the home uniforms (which would scream "Memphis baseball"). Everything else is excellent (and I love their take on the standing bird looking back logo).

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

And I'm with you - this is a fantastic update to the old Cardinals logo.

I really like the hat, and I like the logo overall.  Excellent work.

However, the updated cardinal is odd for one reason...why would a lefty be checking third base that hard?  The old logo makes sense...a righty looking back at first to keep the runner on...

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

Call me a contrarian, but I think that Redbirds rebrand is AWFUL. There are parts that are nice, such as the standing Cardinal, but that script is hideous.

When I saw that the Redbirds weren't changing their name to the Memphis Dryrub Ribs or something crazy I was relieved.  But I still think this rebrand is fantastic.
