I just spoke with a friend who lives about an hour from NOLA. He and his wife liked to catch the occasional Zephyrs game. He swears that they will continue to cheer "Let's go Zephyrs," come hell or high water.

Yeah...I do believe there will be even more backlash to that ridiculous, embarrassing name come April.

I'm hoping, in the end, they just stick with the NOLA jersey and the N.O. cap....

Because, asking professional ball players to wear "BabyCakes" across their chest can't possibly go over well.

I agree with you that the tacky, overdone Brandiosity that seems to be overtaking Minor League Baseball is, on the whole, a loss for good design and branding. Yet there are some recent examples in the affiliated minors that show a competent, unique identity that eschews the kitchen sink approach can still occur in the morass of forced wackiness. I am not 100% opposed to minor league clubs copying the parent's identity, so long as some character unique to the farm team is implemented. I think the South Bend Cubs did this very well. Going to hockey, because I'm much more familiar with its lower tiers, the old Iowa Stars of the AHL tweaked a major-league identity to the point where they were dressing better than their parent club; the current Iowa Wild are a shining example of a team that couldn't be bothered to do anything but change the location name on the logos. And slapping the Rockford IceHogs' cartoon pig on the front of a Chicago Blackhawks jersey is incongruous as all get-out.

At risk of derailing, this has to be said.

Utica Comets

St John Ice Caps

Stockton Heat

SBS Penguins

Bridgeport Sound tigers

Manitoba Moose

And others (can't recall of memory) just pop their logo on front of the jersey and call it a day.

Excusing the Toronto Marlies on this because that's their history even before the AHL, being very close to the Leafs.

The Memphis Redbirds posted a very cryptic video to their social channels on Wednesday. It features some photos from old Memphis teams (Turtles, Reds, think 1920s) along with the date 1/18/2017. Their website reflects this same date.

They just redid their art two seasons ago, but for some reason I think they may be totally overhauling, including the name...? This would be quite a departure, especially since the Cardinals still have partial ownership of the team.

I hope they don't ditch the name. Memphis has one of my favorite identities in all Minor League sports, the name is an honage to the parent club, while still leaving some room for an independent identity.

They could go back to being the Memphis Chicks and I'd be perfectly fine with that.

Red Turtles?  Would certainly not be one of the worse rebrandings of this offseason...

The Redbirds have since posted two more similar videos: one with the Memphis Blues, the other the Memphis Red Sox (Negro Leagues). So I think jumping to the name change conclusion is a bit premature.

Trinity Baseball Holdings owns the majority share of the Redbirds, as of maybe a year ago. They also own the Charleston Riverdogs, who re-identified via Studio Simon this season. When Memphis refreshed in 2015 (IIRC), the Cardinals owned the team outright and did everything in-house. STL still has some stake in the team, but not enough to go full in-house again.

The Swift Current Indians of the WMBL (summer collegiate league in Alberta and Saskatchewan) are now the Swift Current 57's. The name comes from the 57 years they were known as the Indians.

The change was made to drop Indians in order to "promote the team in a more current and sensitive manner."
