2008 MLB Season

The Mets really do need an obscene amount of help. But don't expect them to get it. It's not realistic.

However, I would just like to tell the people who in April, May, June, or July that say "It's just one game, you'll get 'em tomorrow", how many times does it have to happen...how many times will you fail in the end...before you learn that EVERY game is just as important as any other. Today's game was no more important* than any of the other 72 they lost. If they didn't blow just TWO of those games...boom...October baseball. That's why you take nothing for granted. That's why you never let your guard down. That's why I don't want to ever hear anyone again say "It's only one game". It is all the difference needed to separate winners from losers--which is what the 2008 Mets are. Losers.

* Important in terms of the standings. Obviously in terms of psyche, that do-or-die mentality, and other intangibles, some games are BIGGER than others...but not on paper they aren't--nor can they be.

Trust me, it's not said because there's a feeling that "Just one game" isn't of any importance. The reason it's said is because of the constant "Oh God oh God the ship is sinking were done and it's only April we need to spend X amount of money to make it better" mindset. It's just annoying and does nothing to help improve morale. And watching Mets fans (not all, but there are a certain, few, who take this mindset) bitch like the teenage daughters of Oil tycoons on their birthday because they didn't get EXACTLY what they want is what does it for me. Hell, I'd love to see the A's come within one game of the playoffs.

I don't want you to take offense to this, but it seems like you're always complaining about how bad the A's are. They were in the ALCS as recently as 2006 and have had a bunch of playoff appearances in this decade. You could, as a fan, be in a much more desperate situation.

86 wins and 4th place! I love our division :(

And there's a team in the same division even worse off.

Bullcrap. If we still had Santana we'd have locked up our division two weeks ago.

Delgado made an MVP push in the second half so you have to include him too, and Daniel Murphy is a start in waiting.

The lineup is fine for the most part they need to perhaps be more selective in clutch situations but thats it.

No you don't. The Mets didn't even make the playoffs so how does Carlos Delgado have the most value of any player in the National League? Yeah the Mets got close to making the playoffs with Delgado, but tell me the team that wants to finish one game out of the playoffs on the last game of the season.

Albert Pujols should not be in contention for MVP either because his team did not make the playoffs; therefore, he is not that valuable. Yeah he has some value, but not nearly enough to be considered the MVP. If the award was 'Best Player', then you could make an argument, but for MVP? Nah.

Ryan Howard has (should have?) a substantially better shot at winning MVP than Albert Pujols.

I think the Yankees are kicking themselves that they didn't make the deal for Santana. Looking back Melky Cabrera wound up at AAA and Hughes/Kennedy had a horrible year. With Santana they'd be a playoff team and probably not a player in the Sabbathia sweepstakes this offseason. I'm all for player development but when there's an ace of the caliber of Santana available you get him.

However, it was fun watching the Mets implode (and giving my dad much crap about it). Kept me interested in baseball for the last couple weeks of the season, but a big FU to both Extra Innings (who thought the Pirates/Padres game was more important) and TBS for not airing the Shea closing ceremony.

The pen is what killed the Mets nothing else, even games they won it was like you had to close your eyes down the stretch. If they sign K-Rod they will be unstoppable.

I bet they won't be.

Here I go agreeing with a Red Sox fan again. :D

Not only that they probably won't sign him either.

...and here I am agreeing with a Red Sox fan. :D

Everything Frank said about the Mets I could say about the Jays; and Joel could say about the Tigers; and grandmaster c (yes, he does exist) could say about the Mariners.

As a Tigers fan, this season was more disappointing than 1993-2005 combined. All that wasted talent, and to give up Jair Jurjjens for Renteria was a bigger mistake than I initially thought it to be. The only good thing to come out of the 2008 season for the Tigers was the emergence of Armando Galarraga. To imagine him and Jurjjens on the same staff....oh, what could have been.

Hopefully, they have it in their hearts to play spoiler today. I know Freddy Garcia would love to show his former team that he still has something. Maybe Sheff's 500th homer could be his last home run as a Tiger. One can dream, right?

Have you ever watched K Rod pitch, Tank? The reason he gets even half of his saves is because the Angels spot him so many damn runs. He's an absolute nightmare to watch. He once blew a save against Oakland because he dropped a throwback from the catcher. You think your bullpen scares you now? Just wait till your Mets are paying him 30 mil.

Bingo. K-Rod is the posterchild for "cardiac closer." I can't even remember the last time he has more than one strikeout in an appearance. If you want him, Tank, take him. Please, take him!

Chris Coste was on the radio this morning and said the Mets didn't deserve to go to the playoffs because they were an incomplete team that had no clutch hitting in September and no bullpen for almost the entire year. He also said nobody in the Phils locker room shed a tear knowing that jacka** Reyes couldn't celebrate a playoff appearance. They never forgot that July night where he hit a HR in the 6th inning against them and ran around the bases with his finger pointed in the air like he just won a World Series. Newsflash to Mets fans: half your team is completely unlikable, and getting K-Rod will only add to it...

Except on paper this Cardinals team should have struggled to win 70 games this year. Instead they won 86 and were in the playoff hunt until the last week. Shoot-if the Cardinals management would have just scraped up the cash for a decent closer, one starter to replace Carpenter, or bullpen support, there's a pretty good chance this ragtag Cardinals team would be in the playoffs. Pujols is a big reason why this team exceeded expectations in such a large manner. That's your "most valuable" right there. It's not his fault the jokers the Cardinals put on the mound, well....are jokers the Cardinals put on the mound.

Not bothering to check to see if anyone else brought it up, but none other than Pujols himself thinks the MVP should only go to players on playoff teams.

Losing Tatis and Easley killed us down the stretch

If losing Fernando Tatis and Damian Easley killed the Mets, they shouldn't have made it out of the postnatal ward.

That goes right up there with little Steinbrenner wanting MLB to change its playoff format so that the Yankees can make the playoffs even though they finished third in their division.

That's your own GM's fault. I said i before the season and I say i again I see know reason why the Twins traded Santana. Sure he was to be a free agent after the season but you know they are probably compete for a playoff spot. Why not keep him and see where you are as a team. If your on the fringe or out come the deadline trade him then but if you are a position that the Twins ultimatly ended up you keep him and make a run at th World Series. If you have a chance to win now you try and win now and worry about the future later. The Twins GM made a huge mistake in trading him. Don't blame the Yankees, Red Sox or Mets they didn't force his hand.
