Division 1 College Conference Realignment

According to Craig Thompson, Boise State and Air Force have been in contact with the Big East. Yup, they're gone. Wouldn't be surprised to see Houston, UCF, and perhaps SMU go next.

Boise State and Air Force, in the Big East?

College football is going to you know where in a hand basket.

It's no worse then the Big Ten having 12 teams or the Big XII having 10 teams.

The Mountain West and Conference USA have announced a football alliance.

That's right guys, a 22-team mid-major conference.

Also, reports say Boise State and Air Force endorsed the move, whcih means they could be staying put in the MWC -- especially if this new MEGA conference can get an automatic BCS bid.

Good for the MWC and CUSA. This is a great move to help stop the poaching of the lower level conferences.

The blending of mediocre is never good. There will be a group within these 22 who will think that they are superior than the others and will try to "trim the fat".

A 22 team conference? Really? Ugh...

More like "agreement to have champions play knock out game at the end of the season".

The agreement boils down to the two leagues saying they will play a mid-major Super Bowl for a BCS bid. I'm not seeing the blending here.

RE: Air Force to Big East. But I don't want Air Force to join the Missouri Valley in all other sports. <_<

ya just ask the WAC, the FIRST 16 team power conference to be honest, but good for the MWC/CUSA, one upping the BCS comferences, we got more teams then you :P

If I were the basketball only schools currently in the Big East I would say sayonara, see you later and adios.

Why? In that case just let the football schools leave and collect the exit fees (and keep the brand name).

That said I don't think the basketball schools can really survive on their own in today's college sports world. A couple of them have some nice tradition, but they are all small private catholic schools, meaning they don't have a big alumni base. Losing the football side hurts their tv attractiveness financially. Ultimately the Big East would become a really good mid-major conference IMO.

The way i see it, if Big East football ends up falling apart (latest reports having BSU and Air Force saying no thank you), it helps the BCS greatly. They simply let the Mountain USA champ take the BE BCS spot and call it a day. The MAC, WAC (now that Boise is gone), and Sun Belt do not have teams that could really make a gripe about not being in a BCS game.

But this would hurt the chances of a playoff ever happening, IMO.

Point of order: BSU and AFA have not turned down the Big East, as they haven't received their invites yet. That was just ESPN doing their usual fabrication, as they desperately want the Big East to fold for some reason.

The Big East football schools don't like being lowballed on TV contracts. That's why.

Big East should just let their football conference fold and go to basketball only. All their FB schools are leaving and they're basically just gonna take over Conference USA. Cut your losses and move on.

Cincinnati (and possibly Louisville and West Virginia) beg to differ.

Yeah but how long will that last if the Big XII come knocking? Or better yet, the Big 10 and the SEC (looking strictly at West Virginia)?

All are highly possible Big XII invitees. With the direction the Big East is going, it seems inevitable that they would make the jump. There have been talks with those schools and the Big XII, to varying degrees, so it's very much in play.

So what would the new Big East's divisions look like? The Big East West and Big East East? They are extending pretty far west if these reports are true.
