Exactly.

The man's a scumbag.

What do you want him to say? There's a criminal investigation going on. He can't exactly come out like the Pope and directly reference the situation, all he can say without getting further mired in legalities is, "thanks gang, go Penn."

This is something where better "damage control" people would have come in handy for Paterno. That rally in front of his house should never have happened. Any statement he made should have included something about sympathy for the victims of Sandusky and pledging his full cooperation with the DA in the matter and that's it.

Number of victims who have come forward is now at 17.

And we're just at the tip of the iceberg. For as long as this organization has been around, there has to be hundreds of faceless kids who've been ruined that are too ashamed to come forward. What a horror this Second Mile thing is, and we're only scratching the surface.

Nobody should be allowed to have an opinion on this until they read the 23 page report. Read it or remain silent. Needless to say there's a massive idiotic throng of Nittany Lion fans that in their drunken stupor put on their blinders and see what they want to see, which is Joe State College, rah-rah, Go State, etc. Absolutely sickening.

I'm also getting tired of this being referred to as a "sex scandal" or "college football scandal." This is a Child Rape Ring Scandal.

A shame most of the faculty and coaches involved in this don't have half the integrity of that young man.

Good for him and props the FEW Penn State students who were willing to hear the kid out.

Unfortunately, the majority of the mob was more concerned with his Anthony Dorsett jersey and holding their asinine 'Paterno' signs up than anything else.

Various Q/A on twitter with my Chicago lawyer friend Julie:

Q: is there any possibility of criminal negligence? Not just in joepa's case but anyone exempt courtesy of footnote legalities?

A: Id' have to read the PA statute--i think perjury is by far the most likely charge against Paterno, though I think he cut a deal

Q: would the details of any deal be available to the public?

A: Nope--but it would come out on cross examination if there's a trial.

Q: also curious about the likelihood of federal investigation on this, since the kids were taken across state lines? thoughts?

A: Feds are examining whether Penn State violated federal law by failing to report sexual abuse allegations (http://openchannel.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2011/11/09/8722765-feds-review-if-penn-state-officials-violated-us-law)

A: If you look at the case law surrounding the Clery Act, it's doubtful the Feds file criminal charges based on PSU's failure to disclose. In the Va Tech shooting case, the investigations usually say that the criminal was responsible for his actions. And anyway, Clery Act violations usually only result in a fine to the university.

I finished reading the grand jury report. All I have to say is everyone in the Penn State administration and the football department must go NOW!

Here it is. Read at your own discretion (very graphic): http://cbschicago.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/sandusky-grand-jury-presentment.pdf

I just read this... the entire Penn State Athletic department should be shut down. That and the High School which seemingly let Sandusky have his way with the boy. Paterno seemed just as much of a scumbag. He covered it up, and never once told the authorities. I do, however, have more sympathy for McQueary, who just seemed scared. It seemed like this was beyond just the Penn State athletic department; this was covered up by the entire university, possibly even by the local authorities. In fact, it seemed like the police DID know about it, but because of Penn State's power, they didn't do anything about it. This is worse than SMU. This is worse than Miami. This is more than the death penalty. I never though I would say this, but Penn State should no longer be allowed to participate in athletics. Permanently.

Aside from punishing people who had absolutely nothing to do with this scandal, what does permanently shutting down the entire athletics program do that firing everybody involved doesn't?

Things like this just sound stupid. What would this accomplish? Punishing the girls who signed on to play basketball, or the cross country team, or whatever the hell else they have. Heads are rolling, and we probably haven't even seen the end of it yet. But it just flat out doesn't make any sense to punish the innocent, unless it can be proven that the entire athletic department was in on the cover up.

http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/us-department-education-investigate-penn-states-handling-sexual-misconduct-alleg

The U.S. Department of Education will launch an investigation into whether Penn State University failed to comply with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act (the Clery Act) in regard to allegations of sex offenses on campus by a former school official. Former Penn State Defensive Coach Jerry Sandusky has been charged with sexually abusing several young boys over several years, including incidents on campus.

Under the Clery Act, colleges and universities are required to disclose the number of criminal offenses on campus that are reported each year. In addition, in certain cases, the institution must issue a timely warning if a reported crime represents a threat to the campus community. The U.S. Department of Education is responsible for Clery Act compliance.

Education Secretary Arne Duncan said, "If these allegations of sexual abuse are true then this is a horrible tragedy for those young boys. If it turns out that some people at the school knew of the abuse and did nothing or covered it up, that makes it even worse. Schools and school officials have a legal and moral responsibility to protect children and young people from violence and abuse."

The investigation of Clery Act violations will be conducted by the Office of Federal Student Aid (FSA). DOE officials formally notified Penn State of the investigation in a letter today. As the FSA investigation proceeds, the Office for Civil Rights will also assess whether further investigations or enforcement actions are warranted.

"colleges and universities are required to disclose the number of criminal offenses on campus that are reported each year."

Reported to who? Campus police? Or to anyone? Either way, it seems pretty clear that they're in violation of the Clery Act - but what can the DOE do about it?

From what my attorney source said, normally it's merely a fine to the university, but this investigation may just be a facade for a full fledged infiltration into this scandal.

Yeah, this isn't about them. This is, however, about the evil that went unchecked when there was money to be made on college football, and that's why Penn State football needs to be suspended for a year.

You know, I'm just as disgusted by all of this as all of you are (and yes, I have read the GJ report), but good lord do some of you need to take a step back and calm down a bit. Let the legal process, which we all put our faith in, handle this situation. As Aristotle said, and its something that seems to always get ignored, is that law is reason free from passion. I know it's a deplorable situation that came out here, but the way some of you are calling for blood is just as bad as those who are blindly supporting Paterno. Be patient, try to find a level head, and let this whole thing work out according to the law. Trust me everyone, those who are responsible will get what's coming to them.

That's pretty dumb. Obviously, the athletic department needs to completely clean house, it will be a travesty if JoePa coaches another down this season, and PSU football should probably take a year off IMO, but shutting down the athletic department permanently is stupid. That would put people out of a job who had nothing to do with the scandal, and punish athletes in sports that weren't involved.
