MEANS
That Sox logo is not iconic, it's just a poor logo that looks more like a street sign than anything else. What really bugs me is that they only wore this uniform for like 5 seasons yet the logo and marks get used on most all throwback/classic apparel. A team with such a rich uniform history needs to stop focusing on this horrible era. https://www.andrewsterlachini.com/ or http://dribbble.com/MEANS1974
TheOldRoman
That Sox logo is not iconic, it's just a poor logo that looks more like a street sign than anything else. What really bugs me is that they only wore this uniform for like 5 seasons yet the logo and marks get used on most all throwback/classic apparel. A team with such a rich uniform history needs to stop focusing on this horrible era. It's just a matter of unfortunate timing. That logo was in use when I was born, so everyone my age had seen it via old posters in their garage, had old caps in their attic, or whatever. Even though it's bad and we didn't see it personally, there's some nostalgia for it. The throwback jersey craze among rappers was happening around 2001-2004, and those Sox jerseys were among the ones worn prominently. Of course, all the most popular ones (Sox, rainbow guts, powder blue Phillies) were all garish, and they were thought of as "so ugly they're cool."A few years after the throwback jersey fad re-introduced everyone to that era Sox, the the slouch caps with throwback styles became popular (around 2003/04). While Cubs fans wore the navy (actually gray) caps with the bat-holding bear, the Sox fans my age wore the '80s era Sox caps. You still see some of those Cubs caps around Chicago, but they never picked up in the way the Sox slouches did, probably in part because the Cubs never wore throwbacks from that era and it made nobody nostalgic for their childhood. On messageboards, some Sox fans still call for the team to go to that look full-time, but it's exclusively people ages 35 and younger. Even the teens and younger like it because they've been exposed to it their whole lives.Anyway, had the Sox worn those jerseys while winning the division a decade earlier, I don't think the throwback look would have caught on so much with the fanbase because the people nostalgic for their childhoods would have been above the "20-somethings who blow loads of money on merchandise and going to baseball games" market. 14er
I do not like the Reds in black. But if they insist on wearing them, from simply an aesthetic viewpoint, they look a lot better with the white pants than when paired the grey.
ScoffingYayap
If the Sox really want a good fauxback with this design, I say they take the batterman logo and put it on the left side of the chest. A new jersey with retro elements, not a mixmatched remake of an old uniform. FunnyHeadlines
So the White Sox are making their often imitated, at least at the college level, '83 throwbacks a permanent part of their uniform rotation. My old middle school team also imitated it. BBTV
Baseball didn't have as much national exposure back in the early/mid '80s, so if you were an adult and a fan of an NL team, you may never have seen those White Sox uniforms outside of maybe the 3 minute local news sports report if something major happened at a White Sox game. If you were an adult fan of a AL team, then you probably occasionally saw those uniforms when the White Sox visited your city. Now, if you were an actual White Sox fan, or a kid like me who was obsessed with baseball cards, that batterman logo is absolutely iconic. Not necessarily for a good reason - my friends and I always laughed at those uniforms and wondered how they could wear threads like that - but regardless, that batterman (albeit with SOX underneath it) was always in the logo portioin of the card, and I think was a patch, and was instantly associatable with the White Sox, which makes it iconic - even if only to a relatively small subset of people. CubsFanBudMan
I'm not sure if it was ever a patch, but it was on some navy BPs back in the day.
TheOldRoman
Right, it was on the BP jerseys, but the only patches in that era were the All-Star Game patch in 1983 and the Comiskey Park 75th anniversary patch in 1985.
Billy B
I'd absolutely call that Sox logo iconic and they switched to the current set (minus all the small, unnecessary changes) a couple years before I was born. Remember, just because a logo is iconic doesn't necessarily mean it's good. I've always liked the logo for what it was and to me that's a fun throwback logo on hats and shirts. I'm afraid that they're going to wear it way too much this year and it's going to lose some of that charm.
BigEd76
The Tigers are wearing their home helmets with their road uniforms today. Is that normal for them during spring training?(The hats are gray with a navy "D" outlined in orange and a navy brim)
FiddySicks
Yup. That question gets asked every year. It's like the Red Wings name plate thing. It's just for pre season. If we want to use the letter I, I'd say infamous. Most of desire for retro from that period is gen x nostalgia and the fact that tacky is stylish. Padres yellow taco bell era would fall into that as well.

I had the game on in the background while working and didn't remember seeing that in past yearsNo problem. Cards do (did) the same thing as well with their red caps and helmets. Speaking of wearing regular uniforms in Spring Training games, the Cubbies wore their standard home uniforms and caps for the first game at Cubs Park yesterday vs the Diamondbacks (who wore their standard BP tops with grey pants). Do the Cubbies normally wear their regular season uniforms for Spring Training, or was that just special occasion for the opening of their new park? Padres yellow taco bell era would fall into that as well. There's no "shelf life" requirement for "iconic". If a mere symbol can instantly communicate an entire brand, or be instantly recognizable as a representation of a particular business / team / whatever, then it's iconic. The only doubt here is that it's only "iconic" to a few subsets of people, rather than something like the Yankees' NY which is known even in war torn nations in Africa. I think that the "generally accepted" use of "iconic" applies to logos like the Yankees, Apple, Nike, etc. However, that doesn't mean that a logo like the "batterman" (never knew it had a name) aren't iconic as well.
