The Minnesota Gophers unveiled a new gold helmet that they'll supposedly only use "for a couple of games this season."

My personal fear as a Gophers fan is that they'll just go full mustard banana with it.

I like this. I too hope they don't try to match it up with an all-yellow uni.

This was 2 years ago, but how close was michigan from wearing that blue and yellow jersey? It would've been my favorite michigan jersey if they did wear it. http://instagram.com/p/Ten16sDapf/

4th one from the right??
That's the one

Isnt that essentially the home version of the uni worn in the Cowboys Classic against Bama?

I have to admit, I really like these ones.

The Ski-U-Mah battle cry is actually on the helmet stripe twice - once on the front which is visible here, and the second time at the bottom of the stripe, but oriented the same way.

But borrowing the word "ski" from Sioux language and bastardizing it by adding "U-Mah" to make it rhyme with "rah rah rah" isn't an honor, is it? NCAA, where are you?????
Except that ski-u, ski-oo, or ski-yoo arent Sioux words for victory either but was used as exclamation after winning a canoe race against Minnesota that the captain heard and then added mah to rhyme with rah.

Minnesota's own web site proudly lists this "Sioux" word along with an explanation for its origin. If the NCAA can put the hammer down on William & Mary for previously using a feather in its school logo, surely this must raise a few eyebrows.

So the same school that has asked the Redskins not to wear their uniform at their stadium is now using a Native American word on their helmet. Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?

Not really that tribe donated quite a bit of money to the stadium to help get it built and it is through them that they asked them not to wear their uniforms and wear throwbacks when they play there

Considering that the University of Minnesota has a close relationship with the Sioux tribe in the area, I think the tribe is fine with them using their native language.

You're really grasping at straws here.

It's stupid that they want them to wear the throwbacks, because those actually have Native American imagery on them. The regular uniforms only have Redskins on the chest. Just remove the helmet logos for that game.

Native American imagery is not the least bit offensive or problematic. The name "redskins" is. It would be like having. Team honoring a Mexican tribe but instead of something a long the lines of "Aztecs" they went with "brownskins" or "beaners".

No way you're being serious with this.
I'm not saying that that was MY opinion - but Minnesota is going nuts now with threatened lawsuits and protests over first the Redskins playing at TCF Bank Stadium and, within the past few days, the Warroad Warriors (high school team nickname). That, combined with the NCAA's policies on 86'ing Native "mascots" and "hostile and abusive" imagery across the board, made me think SOMEONE would be up in arms over Minnesota's helmet wording.

Using a phrase in another language (even if it's an adaptation) is far from offensive. Just because it's related to Native American culture, it doesn't mean it's racist.

It's no different from putting 'vamos Gophers' on the helmets. Stupid? Yep. Offensive? No way.

Guys, can we keep the thread on topic here? Keep the Redskins bickering in its own thread.

With that said, my personal opinion is that the helmet should match the jersey or the pants, but never both. Minny's gold helmet would look great with gold jersey/maroon pants or maroon jersey/gold pants.
