I've said it here, I've said it in real life, I've said it anywhere it can be said: Florida Man takes our eye off the ball. Florida is weird weird, but Arizona is mean weird.

I swear I saw this same comment on a Deadspin article just last week.

Doesnt make it any any less on the mark, though. The heat :censored:s with your head, I swear.

The heat :censored:s with your head and everything being the same color and every building and house looking the exact goddamn same and all the artificial air-conditioned air you have to breathe :censored:s with your head. In the times I've visited family in Phoenix I felt agitated and grouchy the entire time and was very happy to get on a plane and go somewhere with grass.

I live in Tucson. If it weren't for the need to occasionally go to see the Preds, I'd never set foot in the Phoenix metro. The city is despised by the rest of the state.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Phoenix hockey has had it's chance, and the continued existence as a money pit is insulting to Quebec. The NHL's ability to sell the TV market is the only reason they haven't jumped ship, meaning Houston is likely the only way they move them.

That being said, I'll continue to pull for the Coyotes. I'm dating a 'yotes fan, their continued existence means Preds games a couple hours drive away, and there's no way Tucson keeps their AHL team if they move.

We've gone from "Pierre McGuire sounds gay, he's always talking about people's long sticks and girth" to "Pierre McGuire is an instrument of oppression and toxic masculinity," the world spins madly on.

at this point just move them to Houston (because Quebec wont happen unless a team from the East moves)

so long and thanks for all the fish.

The Down Goes Brown book was talked about before, and having spent the last 2 weeks reading through it I really have to mention the insane 1970 draft "lottery" that it talks about in one part. That year they gave the expansion Sabres & Canucks the top picks, but apparently decided flipping a coin to see who picked #1 was too easy, so they hastily brought out a big wheel with 13 numbers on it, decided landing on a 7 would be a respin to make the wheel actually even, and then let the teams pick what half of the wheel they got. Buffalo won the right* to pick so they took 8-13, Vancouver was left with 1-6, and so they spun. President Campbell then announced that the winning number was 1 for the Canucks, but Sabres GM Punch Imlach noticed something: the winning number was actually eleven and it was shown vertically as

1
instead of "11" on the wheel, which Campbell proceeded to misread. So, Vancouver got swerved, Buffalo won the #1 pick and got Gilbert Perreault; the Canucks settled on Dale Tallon and the rest is history.

* - how did the Sabres win the right to pick first? Easy, they flipped a coin

... which is why Gilbert Perreault wore #11 with the Sabres.

Most OITGDNHL stories are malicious or evil or downright insane but this whole sequence is almost charming. It's like little kids playing.

We may have a new frontier in OITGDNHL here.

Just another one of those great American achievements, like the telephone, the Kids in the Hall, or letting anyone go to the doctor.

Deadspin on the NHL and Quebec City: https://deadspin.com/whos-keeping-the-nhl-out-of-quebec-city-1833781497

Nothing new to us in the article -- in fact, the author omitted the role we suspect Jeremy Jacobs to have in keeping the league out -- but what's really interesting is the comment section and how thoroughly public opinion has turned against Quebec. Almost no support for the Nordiques among fans anymore, who either like to be know-it-alls about GDPs and metro populations, or are so in love with the woke/extremely-online Sun Belt teams that they can't see straight.
