Why are people complaining about the attendance in Florida? I saw hundreds of people there!

Hell, they had more in attendance than a few Marlin games. Hockey in the Sun Belt is a success!

I'm sure it has been asked before, but can any one from Portland say for sure that they would support what would most likely be a struggling franchise like the Panthers? I feel that we may go down the same road in Portland if the team's struggles would continue.

As far as hockey support, the Portland Winterhawks have a very supportive fan base. And hockey culture seems to be strong here historically. Last winter the local historical society held an exhibit on 100 years of hockey history in Portland. There are still fond memories of the old Portland Buckaroos.

None of that, though, translates directly into support. But in a good venue, and in a city that is known (at least with the Timbers and Blazers) to have among the more devout fan bases, I think it would be as safe a bet as Seattle.

Plus, the team may suck inititially, but it's not like the ownership and administration would move with it. If Paul Allen ends up owning the team, my guess is he would appoint Blazers' President Chris McGowan to a new leadership position overseeing both clubs. McGowan held a similar role in Los Angeles with AEG Sports in which he had leadership over both the L.A. Galaxy and the L.A. Kings when the club won its first Stanley Cup.

I don't see why Portland isn't at least on the radar then, other than the NHL is stupid.

I get it, actually. The NHL's always been a league that played the demographics game. Under Bettman it's expansion strategy has been a numbers game: Go to where the market is biggest and the support will follow. So Portland gets overlooked as long as Seattle is an option.

Not quite sure what makes this the "2014-2015 Anti- hread." All we've talked about is relocation and such. That and this thread's been going on for three years now.

That's part of the gag. The name keeps changing every few months or so. By the time this season is over the title of this thread will be lyrics from a Morrissey song or something.

It only took the Marlins (and the entire South Florida region) to be Loria'd for the Panthers to have just enough people to surpass MLB in city-wide interest.

Admiral is right, The Panthers big mistake was location, they should have built a new arena in West Palm Beach. Sunrise seems like its in the middle of the Everglades.

No, nothing is in the middle of the Everglades except an Indian reservation and a few road. The arena is as close to the Everglades as you can build. East of the arena is just generic Florida sprawl, but you cross the expressway that runs alongside the arena and it's just miles and miles of swamp.

West Palm Beach makes even less sense. That's a looong way up the coast. They don't even have Miami's TV stations because the signals don't carry. It's about 45 miles north of Fort Lauderdale. Granted, you can do 45 miles in about 35 minutes on I-95 if the fates allow, but that's still a lot of gas to burn.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

  • 2 weeks later...

Bonus "home" game for the Canadiens on December 30, when they face the Panthers in Sunrise. The Habs faithfull who live there are incredibly lucky to have access to tickets to see our Habs, for the price of a hot-dog and a beer. Considering attendance is getting worse, it's very likely that the cheers are going to be even louder...
