Los Angeles NFL Brands Discussion

True, but you have to remember that the time between approving the relocation and the first game is eight months.  That's simply not enough time to create a new design and have product on the shelves.

The Rams might not want to keep their throwbacks (and given that awful collar, I don't blame them). So it may not be as simple as we all would have wanted.

As it's been mentioned earlier you could either decide to run with the throwbacks full time or recolor the existing set which would require about a day's work updating existing designs. Had one either of these routes been taken, you would have a tight timeline but could definitely have licensed apparel ready by preseason. Other products may have longer lead times but you could also phase that stuff in.

And let's not forget the Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers who basically moved and changed their identity in a week.

Things are certainly much more complicated now, however we have seen plenty of examples of teams, even after extensive market research and plenty of lead-in time laying an egg when it came to creating a new design (I'm looking at you Arizona Diamondbacks, Los Angeles Clippers and Cleveland Browns).

I would thing there would have to be a change simply because the team's name has changed.

When it has to be done quick (such as relocation, or when the Baltimore Ravens were forced, effectively, to change from the shield to the birdhead logo) they can be done. It's just the NFL would prefer to make sure everything goes off without a hitch. All marketing and production get the right logo or colors, there's a campaign for the team to update marketing. That the uniforms and logos, etc, all look good for television (much less important in the days of HDTV of 60" screens), and that they've been 'market tested' for selling merchandise.

The problem is, the old days basically hired or directed someone to come up with a logo concept or uniforms design, and then the ownership approved or it didn't.

Now, it's almost 'by committee'. Imagine making a sandwich by committee. Someone wants turkey, while others want roast beef. One guy loves reubens and demands thousand island dressing. Another hates mustard, but loves ketchup, while a few others demand they must have onion, but no lettuce. Some want it open-faced with gravy while another wants it on a bagel.

Before you know it, you're eating hot dogs on luke-warm tortillas, covered with thousand island with ketchup and onions. Because that's what the committee all individually wanted. And in the end, nobody will take a bite because it's horrible. But nobody complains because they all got what they wanted.

Meanwhile, they market test it by individually asking people what they think of each ingredient, rather than just showing them the abomination, because they don't want anyone to leak their prized designs.

And, honestly, even if they have a bit of a "shortage" of the new colored gear, it could potentially work to their advantage by driving up demand even further. At least for a little while.

Just wanted to share in case some of you may not have seen. Not sure if this means much, or holds any weight, but there is an article saying there is going to be a re-brand for the Rams in May. It is the internet, so I think it's just speculation. I guess some writer has an inside scoop or something.

Great find

this link leads to another from the New York Times. This definitely sounds legit

So far, the Rams have not been a major presence in their former hometown. A campaign to rebrand the team, along with player appearances locally, will not begin until May.

I desperately want that to be so, but I'm not sure we can read into it what you're reading into it.

The Times doesn't say "new uniforms", it just mentions "a campaign to rebrand the team." The term "rebrand" is a nebulous one, referring to anything from a logo change to changing opinions about something.   Their campaign could just be about creating a sense of belonging to rebrand the recently returned club as "true LA" or something.

We'll see.

Thanks. The L.A. Rams Facebook group has had some good insight and articles. That's where I found it.

I'm not seeing a source on it. I would love to see it, and they probably could get throwback gear produced in time as a stopgap while they design an all new LA Rams set but...I just don't see them doing it at this point. Again, I would love to see it. I'm just taking a wait and see approach.

Out of the three, I'd most like to see the Rams move (back) to L.A. I think it would be a great opportunity to return to royal and yellow/athletic gold as well. The navy and Vegas gold say "St. Louis Rams" to me, while the royal and yellow say "L.A. Rams." Leave the navy and Vegas gold in St. Louis with the Greatest Show on Turf. The current colors are called "Millennium Blue" and "New Century Gold," for Faulk's sake. Get that outta here.

It's also not as if the throwback uniforms look bad on the current state of NFL jersey templates, either:

I'm not saying they should bring the throwback jerseys verbatim, but return to the L.A. Rams' old look just seems to fit, y'know?

So, the best decission they can do is choos royal and yellow

is there a rule stopping them from designating their throwbacks as the home uniform for all 8 home games (and the occasional roadie)?  Even if the NFL tells them they can't I think they should just do it anyway and pay the fines. It's clear that's what the home crowd wants to see.

They could be the NFL version of the Edmonton Oilers who IIRC wore their blue throwbacks for as many games as possible at home and then the next season trashed the navy blue edge uniforms and brought in a matching white throwback as the permanent road jersey.

I could see the Browns doing this with their ill-received redesign, which would be nice because the Browns are the NFL version of the Edmonton Oilers.

As for the Rams, they should really just scrap the whole St. Louis set and do a quick turnaround like the Thunder and Winnipeg Jets did, except this would be a lot harder to screw up than those teams did. We know what the people want. Giving it to them can't be that hard.

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

BOOM!! Sorry folks but the current unis are staying until 2019 when they move into the new stadium.

There is a caveat however in that they could change their throwback for 2017 since they only need to give 1 year notice. Would be cool to see the orginal 1950's blue and yellow set or the 1960's blue and white set again!!
