They own the red, or the red on red, and it separates them from the numerous other navy/red teams in the MLB. Even just look at the infamous AL West A'sSHÅT photo and see what the red Angels hat does for that division and what a navy Angels hat would do to it.

The old California Angels set is just Red Sox West, especially the years when they straight up used the Red Sox number font.

 

I could take or leave the gold halo, but that seems like an unnecessary thing to go through all that work in changing the signage and branding and what have you for a single strip of logo colour unless they were going to do a full rebrand.

I like the red jersey, but I will agree with the shadowing issue. I've never liked that the script has the dropshadows while the number and NOB is just a single stroked outline. The red jersey is actually the only one with a consistent outline on the script, the name and the NOB.

This will never happen (under current circumstances, who knows something could change, but probably not with the stadium plans). If the stadium PA guy isn't referring to the team as "The Los Angeles Angels" and all the merchandise which says "City Name Team Name" for the 29 other teams says "Angels Baseball" for the Angels, there's not going to be a non-throwback, fulltime "Los Angeles" jersey or hat anytime soon.

i'm always perplexed by the love for the snow whites. i don't really get it. i don't think it's a superior look to the pinstripes, and it's not different enough to stand out as a true alternate. both versions (with dropshadow, and the 2012-and-beyond without) never really did anything for me.

Pinstripes belong to the Bronx. The snow whites allow the blue and orange colors to shine and creates a look entirely theirs in the city.

 

The expansion Mets borrowed one element from each of New York’s teams. They should have stopped after grabbing a color from the Giants and Dodgers.

yeah, shrug. i know there's a contingent that feels that way about pinstripes. as a die-hard mets fan, i just never felt that way. when i see the pinstripe uniforms, my mind goes to footage of the '69 team. i guess it's just personal taste.

 

if i was re-starting the franchise from scratch, i'd probably agree and do a pinstripe-less white home set. but i would object to abandoning pinstripes in favor of something like the snow whites.

For my personal taste, I think the snow whites are the best look they’ve had. The colors set it off beautifully, and it’s less busy.
 

I think pinstripes work best on more monochromatic teams, teams with one primary color and then a tertiary color at best: Yankees, Phillies, Sox, Rockies.  I don’t really love them on the Brewers, Padres, or Mets.

When it comes to the Angels, I can't determine whether I'm just nostalgic for the past or if I just really like their old Rod Carew/Bobby Grich-era uniforms better.  

 

It's undeniable that owning red the way they do sets them apart, which I consider important. Yet the whole look feels too one dimensional. I agree with those of who you suggested the Angels are just a tweak or two away from significant improvements. I really like the idea of Navy road caps. 

 

Also, the clubs that embrace navy/red do so with navy at the forefront. The Angels can manage to stay unique with a red first, navy secondary approach that would add some dimension to their overall set, while paying homage to their earlier years. 

 

I also really like the suggestion made earlier about having an L.A. cap with the halo ring on top. If they rolled out a new uni set, I'd be all for a red-capped home, navy road and a throw-back inspired third that used the L.A. halo cap.

I’m in the same boat. I really like the snow whites and prefer them to the pinstripes, but I also think the pinstripes are too historical to ditch.

I think they’re good on relatively one-color teams (NYY, PHI, and CWS). I’m more inclined to like them on classic designs (‘60s throwback Twins and Mets) than modern looks (Padres and Brewers, but I like the added trim on the Padres). The Rockies need to change everything that’s on top of the purple pinstripes to have more purple, while the ‘98-‘06 Diamondbacks looked way too busy with pinstripes and drop shadows.

Wait a minute. The wordmark on the jerseys doesn't have beveling, but the standard wordmark does?

 

 

 

I'd definitely remove the beveling from the standard wordmark and the cap logo.

 

(These are the current colors with California Angels 1971 through 1992 yellow.)

There really is no point to the beveling; the team doesn't use the darker red for anything else. It's pretty much a relic of early-2000s brand design. Logos look a lot cleaner without it, and I give a small advantage to the gold halo.

Beveling reeks of late '90s/early 2000s sports design. It's starting to look really dated. If the Angels were to do away with it entirely it would be a major upgrade.

Moreover, standardization should be done. No more bevels, no random white outline on the road wordmark, and no silver “shadows” on the home and red jersey wordmarks. The set has a lot of mismatched and vestigial bits and the team can clean it up with few people noticing.

I think the Angels should be a red, white, and gold (either athletic or metallic) team, with maybe a touch of navy for contrast. Something similar to the Florida Panthers' last rebrand. Also, the cap logo gets lost a bit on the red background, so a white front-paneled cap would be a big improvement.

I’ve actually always thought that the Angels are one of the few teams in the league that could make white hats work. I think it would be cool if they used either an all white cap or a white crown and red billed cap. Maybe as a Sunday alt or something.

Most unnecessary sleeve patch in sports. I'm seeing 3 halo A's in this one picture and there's another Haloed A in a roundel on the other sleeve!

TIL the current Angels set only had the yellow halo on the 50th Anniversary season. I assumed it was always there.

I love white caps with colored brims. Always a very clean look. Although I think the Angels pull off white-paneled caps well, like the Blue Jays.

Cool idea.  They would look very... angelic.  And yeah, keep it strictly to a Sunday home alt cap to maintain its "special-ness."  

 

 

 

By the way I think at some point there was a discussion about fashion caps that featured the logo upside down, here's kind of an equally stupid one, it's called the "Double Whammy" and it's available at hatland.

A white brimmed hat would look terrible after one game.  Think of how dirty the brim would be from players taking them on and off with their dirty hands or batting gloves.  

 

It white crowns look bad, but white brims are a non-starter.
