Totally brainfarted; forgot about the Big Dipper and retired numbers.  Ironically, I did remember something about Vlade giving Howard his blessing to use number 12, not that he needed to, unless I was confusing that with Magic giving Shaq permission to use number 32 when he joined the Lakers...

 

Also notice the roster skipping number 8, which was obviously retired at the same time as 24, after I had posted but also wasn't registering in my brain.  Thanks for the reminder.

They found way to incorporate these old side panels which were meh. BUT...

Wow, Minnesota hit it out of the park. The "fur" side panels from the lackluster gray City (or whatever) jersey weren't even necessary, although, they're not making it worse either.

 

I'd like to see something along those lines for the regular sets.

No, we all do not.  You and a few others may, but not I (and I'm sure I'm not alone on that).

You know what...yes, these are. The only knock is the extra gray outlines. Lose those and that becomes a top-10 look (if it were to be permanent).

I'm fine with it that they didn't use those 2000s-tastic side panels. It is weird to elevate a one-off, forgettable City uniform to the level of your first two, classic, well-remembered uniforms (have a feeling we'll be seeing a lot of that on these mashups). But in this case it does look better on its own merits and doesn't clash with the rest of the look; applying one uni's color scheme to another's design is a safe way to do this but here we see it gets results.

I'm with you, for sure.  These are a really great take on that era's unis using the far superior colors from their inaugural set, and adapting the overlong "Timberwolves" wordmark into the shortened "Wolves" is really smart. (I could do without  the supplemental texturing on the sides and back; adds unnecessary noise.) 

 

That said, I'm still among the minority that thinks the Wolves inaugural set represent the best they've ever looked. I'd like to see a retro-inspired set that takes inspiration from the simplicity of that original look. 

 

This new alt, I'll concede, is at least a step in the right direction.

Not this design was ever good to begin with but they made it worse when they dropped the green. That was a dumb decision. The colors and trees were all it had going for it.
