We've had surprise uniform stuff the last few years. The most infamous one being the Ravens gold pants which were one and done because the reaction was so negative.

Chiefs and Rams once busted out throwback helmets without any prior announcement.

I won't be surprised when a team unveils a new helmet suddenly before kickoff. It's rare that these things happen but I can see it. The question is will any of these alternate looks have staying power because some do and some don't. I feel like NFL teams are more self aware about knowing if their look sucks than in any other league.

I remember the mustard britches for the Ravens (I actually like them, my Retro Bowl Ravens rock them) I hope you're right, I like surprises.

I am sore, wounded, but not slain

I will lay down and bleed a while

And then rise up to fight again

It's just as bad as you think with the full uniform.

The helmet BY ITSELF isn't terrible, with the uniform it's bad, but for a team like the Bears... there is no way this should exist. I'm scratching my head here. At least pair it with the navy pants.

At least before the one-helmet rule was implemented, the alternate helmets were mostly justified and had a reason to be there, mostly with throwbacks. Now it's just a free for all, and teams are jumping on the bandwagon for no better reason than just money. Shame. Some teams could maybe pull it off, but the Bears shouldn't have even been here. If they wanted to, it should have maybe been a white helmet, but that's it.

With the second helmet rules, that would be border line impossible to keep under wraps:

Alternate color helmets must be worn in practice at a minimum during the week leading up to the game in which they will be used

This is one of the worst ones so far. The Bears don't need an alternate helmet at all, especially one that completely sinks an already mediocre alternate jersey. This is just atrocious and doesn't vibe with the Bears' look in the slightest. I hope they never dare to pair it with the normal home and away sets.

Much like the Eagles, the Bears orange helmet feels like something they decided to have just to have it.  If it's absolutely gotta be around, I wish they'd have used the bear head instead of the C for once.

Granted, it won't be the first time the Bears have worn orange helmets...just the first time since the 30s.

These just continue to get worse by the day.  The Bears, one of the most traditional teams of all time now suddenly needs an orange helmet?  They, like Houston, ruined a solid alternate look that had a nice balance of color by removing pretty much all navy. At this point, nothing will shock me anymore. Green Packers helmet, navy Cowboys helmet, you name it. Absolute nightmare.

1st thought: is there historical precedent to the Bears wearing an orange helmet? I haven’t looked at the GUD so I don’t know off hand.

2nd: I want to throw up with how bad this looks.

The helmet alone isn't terrible, since they did have orange helmets at one point. But it just doesn't work with the orange jersey and would look even worse with navy or white jerseys. Probably the most unnecessary alternate so far. Also seem to be pretty well disliked across social media. Something that hasn't happened yet.

Getting rid of the one-helmet rule has turned into what people were afraid the MLB’s City Connect program was going to be come.

For throwback purposes, I’m all for accurate helmets. But with some of the BFBS helmets that have debuted the last week and now the Bears, it’s definition “just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.”
