Sports Degrees of Separation

My brother fist-bumped Myers Leonard during pregame when his high school team played against Robinson High School. That is literally the best I can do.

I lived on the same floor as Meyers last year. Didn't really talk to him too much, but his roommate walk-on Kevin Berardini is pretty cool.

The orthopedic doctor I saw for a broken ankle in 2002 is the father of Tim Bulman of the Texans.

I went to high school with the sister of Josh Hennessy of the Providence Bruins (formerly the Binghamton/Ottawa Senators).

I hung out with Ron Brace's cousin at my previous college.

Skateboarder PJ Ladd is from my town.

When I was in college I shined a portable TV light on to Larry Doby for a classmate's project in which he was interviewing him at the Yogi Berra Museum gran opening. BTW the cost to get into the grand opening of Yogi Berra's museum, where I also shook Ted Williams hand was $10,000. Because I helped with this project I got in for free.

The former Atlanta Falcons kicker Mick Luckhurst came from a town 7 miles from mine. (I know it's not much but it's about as good as I could do with American sports as a theme!)

Oh Luke Donald was born in my home town! And Theo Walcott and Vinnie Jones have homes in the area!

Went to junior high with a guy named Steve Mott who went on to play center for Alabama under Bear Bryant and then for the Lions.

Last weekend I was wearing Saints gear in the town we live near (Canton, GA) and two different young guys said they went to school with the Niners' fullback, Bruce Miller, who is from Canton. He's now on the cover of SI, lined up in front of Frank Gore.

John Fourcade, QB of my high school's rival, went on to be an NFL strike replacement in '87 and hung on with the Saints for a few years after that. He's on the NFL Films video 100 Greatest Touchdowns as the result of a bizarre play during the strike where he threw a pick, the Rams defender fumbled, another Ram picked it up and ran then was stripped from behind and Fourcade picked it up and went 80 yards down the sideline for a Saints TD.

I was watching Mike Zigomanis play for the Marlies today at the Outdoor Classic in Hamilton. He used to play with Buffalo, St. Louis, Phoenix and won a Stanley Cup ring with Pittsburgh. He is currently in the Toronto Maple Leafs organization (his hometown.) My wife and I used to work with his uncle George Zigomanis at Stoney Creek Dairy where he worked as an accountant. My wife still keeps in touch with George.

We got the jobs at Stoney Creek Dairy through a temp agency called Coffey & Associates, owned and run by former Tiger-Cats receiver and hall of famer Tommy Joe Coffey. I would get phone calls for work from him (The calls would always start with "Hello, this is Tommy Joe." It would be all I could do keep from going 'Squeee'. Even though I'm too young to remember him playing, I very familiar with his legendary status in Hamilton.)

Former Ticat great Angelo Mosca is a regular figure around Hamilton. When Harvest Burger was still up and running on King Street West, whenever I passed by, I would often see Big Ang surrounded by a group of older gentlemen, and judging from his animated style, I would say he was regaling them with some very good stories...

Yet another former Ticat great Harlen Ellison moved a couple of doors down from my mother. For some reason his mail kept getting sent to my moms house and she would have to go down the street and deliver it to him.

I have a cousin who married a guy whose brother played in the NHL--so 1 step to my cousin, a 2nd to her husband, and another to his brother--then it would be 4 to any former teammates of his...

or 3 if I just say my cousin's brother in law--although my cousin and her husband and her parents (my aunt & uncle) known in another sport that doesn't get mentioned much here...

Maybe I'll drop some hints, but for now, that's what I'll say...

Comic Sans walks into a bar, and the bartender says, "Sorry, we don't serve your type here."

Story B: Red Wings go undefeated and score 100 goals in every game. They also beat a team comprised of Godzilla, the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, 2 Power Rangers and Betty White. Oh, and they played in the middle of Iraq on a military base. In the sand. With no ice. Santa gave them special sand-skates that allowed them to play in shorts and t-shirts in 115 degree weather. Jesus, Zeus and Buddha watched from the sidelines and ate cotton candy.

Some new ones.

My dad went to college with and was friends with Bob Ferry.

He was also in boot camp with Tim McCarver and Ray Sedecki at Ft. Lenord Lood, Missouri.

I was in the backfield in high school with a current Bronco's defensive starter. It's wild seeing someone you played with, especially from a small town, in the league.

You were sufficiently cryptic with your post, so I'll continue - his jersey was retired at the game against my school this year. I teach at one of the schools in their current region, although you probably never played against my school since you guys were 4A then.

[edit] upon further review, there are multiple Broncos defensive starters from small towns in South Carolina, so maybe you were more sufficiently cryptic than I had previously believed. Nicely done.
