2013 MLB Logo and Uniform Changes

I prefer the Cards in red caps on the road. The navy caps look great, but the red cap is, in my opinion, on par with the Yankees, Tigers, and Dodgers caps. When you have something that's that good, something that so epitomizes what a baseball cap should be, you should wear it all the time.

And yes, I know the Tigers have a road cap as well, but I'd like to see them ditch it too.

The Cardinals aren't in the same boat as those teams because they have worn a navy hat for most of their existence. And yes the red is a great cap... when paired with the home whites. The navy cap is a great cap when paired with the road grays, more so than the red. And with all due respect, the Cardinals fanbase overwhelmingly sided with navy over red. That should be enough, paired with the historical factor.

That's bizarre. Squatchees have long been a problem with them.

EDIT: just checked the Mets and, sure enough, they missed the orange squatchee.

Strange. I think they're following their old pattern of using the contrasting squatchee with contrasting brims but ignoring the contrasting squatchee if the brim matches the crown. At least for the majors - they don't always follow that rule for minor league clubs.

well mets never had an orange squatchee prior to the 90s, more old school feel? maybe?

I'd love to press "stop" on any uniform changes for the Mets forever with this current set, just not wear the orange-brimmed hat that often.

While I agree for the most part, I still would like to see what the road alt would have looked like with orange lettering.

And I'd ditch the Mr. Met BP cap in favor of a modified orange brimmed cap with no white outline on the logo.

Make those tweaks, then STOP.

Side by side, the Marlins old uniforms make their new set look like a joke

I feel the exact opposite. The new ones make the old ones look bland and uninspired.

I disagree with both of you - both of those jerseys are terrible.

RE: Astros

My personal preference would be the navy cap on the road with navy socks and undershirts. Wear the navy/orange cap at home with navy socks and orange shirts, and wear the orange caps as a home alternate.

If they had to get rid of one cap, scratch the navy/orange one and go with all-navy accessories at home.

I agree with this 100% and I knew the Cardinals would try to smooth-talk their way out of the mess they created with the blue hat. Change for the sake of change. not something I expected from the Cardinals. Hopefully the blue hat is back to full time road next year?

I hate when teams make the wrong uniform choices when the correct ones are so bleepin obvious.

So bleepin obvious? The Cardinals look better in red on the road.

Reminder: Every opinion I post in the sports logos thread is IMO (sometimes I like to phrase things as if they're concrete facts because it's more fun). Yes, the correct choice for the Cardinals is obvious and it's that they look better in blue on the road.

On top of that They've worn blue on the road far longer than they ever worn red. People are acting like this return to red hats on the road is on the same level as the Blue Jays and Mets returning to their "correctly colored" road hats last year. It isn't the same at all. If there is one team where wearing different hats at home and on the road is better than just having one hat it's the St. Louis Cardinals.

FWIW I like the return to red too. Reminds me of the 80s Cardinals I grew up watching

You know, I've heard that a lot, and a lot of people (I'm not saying you are, I'm just using your post as a launching pad for my own) argue that the switch back to red is a good one because its a return to the classic look they once had. But not only is it already well documented that they have a longer history in navy caps (and they even switched the year they're honoring Stan Musial, who never even wore the red cap!), it's also "returning to a classic era" which had the Cardinals wearing powder blue pull overs with elastic waste bands. There's only one crazy that I know of here that ever thought that was a good choice, and he's constantly derided for it. You can't point to one part of "history" while completely ignoring another like that.

Ugh, this change is one of the biggest uniform blunders I've ever seen. It's such a small change, yet it completely changes the dynamics of the entire aesthetic package. Hopefully the Cardinals wise up soon and just go back to what worked so well for them the last twenty or so seasons, and when the topic of wearing red caps on the road in 2013 is brought up years down he road it's a topic the Cardinals would rather forget even happened.

keep in mind that the majority of fans who watched the navy capped cardinals are now deceased.

the majority of cardinals nostalgia these days is derived from the color tv era which was red cap centric hence the preference for the "return" to red on the road.

why not just compromise and make the all navy a road and home alt? wear it one game a week.

No, the majority of fans are very much aware of the history of the navy cap. Hell it's been the road cap for the last 21 seasons before this year. Everyone knows what that cap means. Don't act like its lost on this generation. It's not. That's why, despite the front office's best efforts to skew the results, the navy cap was the overwhelming favorite in the fan vote. I was born in 1981 and have been going to Cardinals games since I was a baby (seriously, my parents first took us to games when we were that young). When they added the road in 1992, I knew exactly what it was about. It's a giant part of the team's history.

Btw, they last used the navy caps in 1964 before going away til '92. Unless you think everyone born before '64 is deceased, I believe you need to actually research the subject before commenting.

I actually dig the Cardinals wearing red caps on the road.

What I don't dig is that they dangled the decision making carrot in front of the fans and then reneged on it.

If red is what they always wanted, then they should have never done the cute fan voting gimmick and just gone with red.

Exactly. the red hat would sit a little better with me if the Cardinals had just decided on red and made that the end of it. While the blue hat looks better to me, and apparently most Cardinals fans, I think I would have been fine with only red had they not dangled the proverbial carrot in front of me and snatched it away.

So I've thrown this out there a couple times and someone else just did, too: Navy cap for Sunday home games? Or with the new alt? Why must it be a road cap now? The history is at home, too, and the fans have shown their interest in it...

[i submit the following comments, knowing McCall pretty much made this point a few posts back]

Gee, I knew the head cold I've been suffering from all week was bad, but was unaware I was deceased until reading this post. :)

They wore navy caps on the road last year (and for that matter, every year since '92). I have a nephew who is 12 who keeps asking me why they changed. It's not just those who remember them from pre-color tv days who miss the navy road caps.

As an aside, I'm still wondering how Cardinals fans will react to the new home alt once it is worn this coming weekend. My nephew has also been asking why the Cards have a white road jersey, for what it's worth.

So I've thrown this out there a couple times and someone else just did, too: Navy cap for Sunday home games?

If it means getting rid of that stupid bird cap they wear now on Sundays, I'm all for it.

Gothamite, you'd be surprised how popular that cap is in St. Louis. We have "Cardinal casual days" at the publishing company I work at in St. Louis, and I'd say you see as many of the alt caps as you do red or navy.

I've never been a big fan myself of them myself, but I think it's not unlikely that there would be a greater uproar if that disappeared.

Ideally, maybe you can keep the regular navy cap as a Sunday alt, make Sunday's alt the BP cap, keep wearing red otherwise, and be done with it.

The BoB hat is definitely unique, on one hand I absolutely love it and think it's one of the best looking hats in my collection (100+ hats) but on the other hand I can't stand that thing on the field. It is very jarring seeing something other than StL on there caps and the Cards just simply should not have a different color bill.
