2013 NFL uniform/logo changes

A guy gets fined $10,000 for wearing Under Armour visor clips with the logo blacked out, but the NFL actually encourages (mandates?) that teams destroy their color schemes for a whole month every season. :therock:

Because supporting a worthy cause is more important. Ask EJ Manuel what he thinks about it...

A worthy cause?

I'm positive everyone is aware of breast cancer. There are far more deadly cancers out there to worry about, plus a cancer like prostate cancer should receive more attention in a league played entirely by men.

But the pink people are on a warpath about making the NFL do this. The NFL does it to try and look good (it's not working aesthetically speaking) to the public eye and to try and pander to women viewers.

Wouldn't it be better for the players to just make donations? Or have a general cancer fight like hockey and baseball does without having to make the uniforms look so ugly?

Roger Goodell is an assclown, and this is just further proof. We don't need uniforms covered in pink. We all know breast cancer exists. But there are many other cancers that deserve more awareness given their mortality rate and population they affect.

This! Why are all the men's sports wearing pink for breast cancer when not one single women's team has ever worn blue for prostrate cancer? It should just be a general cancer awareness campaign. Maybe they could partner with Livestrong.

Because women are an emerging market.

Why are all the men's sports wearing pink for breast cancer when not one single women's team has ever worn blue for prostrate cancer?

They won't take this diagnosis lying down!

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫

I nearly broke my TV set an hour ago. They aired a commercial with a female Jets who saw all the pink during a Jets game a few years back and asked her husband what it mean. It inspired her to get tested, and of course, she had early-stage breast cancer. Apparently, she was a vapid imbecile who had plum forgotten that she had breasts until the NFL to reminded her. For the love of God.

Since nobody self-fellates like the NFL, we are going to see this "the NFL saves lives" commercial in heavy rotation the entire month. And while it's nice that this woman caught her cancer early, I think the chances of this happening to another buffoon are about as high as the chances another photographer gets leveled on the sidelines, goes to the hospital, and finds out he has operable brain cancer (which happened in the '90s).

The creeping pink is only getting worse, especially since we now have Nike prodding the NFL for more alternate uniforms. Within five years, we will have some teams coming out in entire pink uniforms in October. And a year or two later, the entire league will have uniforms in pink hues (except for helmets, of course!) because no team wants to be the one so misogynistic as to not wear pink. See, the NFL totally cares. Take THAT, Major League Baseball!

Sorry, but if it helps one woman, or raises $1 it is worth it. You have the nerve to complain because you have to see the color pink for one month of the season? Please let me know how this makes your life any less enjoyable? How does it make the games any less exciting?

Get over it.

Roger Goodell is an assclown

That right there, is nearly every problem the NFL has had in the last decade summed up in five simple words.

And really, I agree with OldRoman. It's one thing to support breast cancer research, but it's another thing entirely to ruin the aesthetics of the entire league for a month to play this "hey look at us! We care about your :censored:! But not as much as we care about your money! Buy our pink crap!"

That commercial is downright insulting.

the thing is it's a scam to get people to buy their pink stuff for their own gain, and some of the profits go to the cancer society. Its just the NFL whoring itself out for a buck, not trying to legitimately make money to help someone else, if they cared they would wear the gear to show awareness then donate their own money to the cause with out selling it.

That's fine. I'll give the NFL the benefit of doubt and say this woman wasn't an actor with the story made up, unlike the concussion data the NFL made up to sweep that under the rug for so long. This woman saw pink in a game and decided to get tested. She didn't see the "we care about breast cancer" commercials from various companies the entire month. She didn't see pink 5 Hour Energy and their annoying commercials with the girl playing a guitar. She wasn't on Facebook, and didn't have her entire wall filled with "Save the Tatas!!1!", photos of bras and sexually suggestive posts from middle-aged women, which later detail "oh yeah, get checked out." She didn't even see the pink on sideline hats and shirts, but it took pink captain patches, armbands, socks and shoes for her to think about cancer.

But since it saved one life, we need to expand it. We need to pick a cancer to make one aware of every given month. I mean, this is so important that we need to compromise the game uniform for the off chance that one person's saved, right? What about kelly green accents in September for kidney cancer, yellow in November for bladder cancer, and orchid in December for testicular cancer?

The worst part of this pink :censored: is that it'll never go away now because feminists would throw a fit. We don't need an entire month of pink gear ruining the uniforms to know what breast cancer is. And the fact that 95% of the money from this goes to the owners' pockets shows it's all a cynical grab for women's merchandise sales and good PR.

Reportedly...*90% of profits goes to the NFL (supposedly to maintain the ACS program).

To break it down, on a $100 pink purchase - $50 for cost of goods sold, $45 to NFL, $5 goes to ACS.

I'm not sure if that's true, as it leaves the retailer with no profit, but that breakdown is the rumor. Not sure how true it really is. And this is just retail sales.

Anything auctioned off goes entirely to the ACS.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

This. Unless you're a complete moron you should already be aware of breast cancer.

You should already be aware of McDonald's too, but yet they still advertise.

There's really nothing wrong with the program except for the actual lack of money the NFL sends to ACS. The NFL probably chose breast cancer because it either 1) affects the most people or 2) has the ability to affect the most people, since there are more women than men in the U.S. and the world. Plus it appeals to a demographic that historically isn't drawn to the NFL like men.

They may be aware of it, but not know the signs or how to check, or where to get checked, or where to get treatment, or how to get treatment. Plus there's still a ton of stuff about this disease and cancer in general that's still unknown. And this might get people to seek out that information that might not have otherwise.

For probably the first time, I agree with VMD.

I'm ok (keyword being ok) with the pink accessories. I agree a month is a bit excessive. The NFL is popular enough that you could reduce it to 1 (2 if you want every team to participate regardless of byes) week and still get relatively the same exposure. Once they start turning the logos and jerseys pink, then it's time to just shut it down.

And obviously, they need to give more of the proceeds to the actual cause as well.

Can you link a source to that fact?

Darren Rovell reported that 100% of the net profits, which is everything but the cost of merchandise production, goes to ACS.

Regarding the pink, if everyone knows about breast cancer, then the NFL is doing exactly what they wanted. I do agree that they should cut down the number of games though: 2 in the middle of October. Each team gets one home game during those two weeks. Would make everyone here happy (or less angry) but would still be long enough to make an impact.

Rovell is hardly a credible source, but let's pretend that he's right.

Net profits are after everything is taken out, from the coats of production to marketing to paying the salaries of the online shop staff.

Last year, that meant 5% of the retail price went to ACS, and only 70% of that goes to actual cancer programs. Meaning for every $100 last year, cancer research got $3.50. It's a total :censored:ing scam.

Cross off one and two. This is solely about marketing. Part of it is appealing to the female demographic, but I doubt ladies who otherwise wouldn't watch football will tune in because they heard about pink cleats being worn. The NFL jumped on the hot cause of the moment. There are plenty of other cancers which have the potential to do as much harm, but they don't have strong marketing arms making a color synonymous with their cause. Pink has been omnipresent the last several Octobers, and the NFL latched on to it. It does this month not to bring attention to the cause, but to bring positive attention to itself, particularly in the light of the negative attention as more and more concussion stuff they swept under the rug comes to light.

I wish they'd just do it for one week. You still get the good image of doing everything pink just in general and you can still do things to "raise awareness" but pure on field pink should be limited to one week and not dragged on all month. Are there bigger things to worry about in the world than guys wearing pink gloves? Yes, but it almost devalues it since it goes on for a whole month. Like when I heard the pink was back, I was like "oh, ok." instead of "oh wow NFL's going pink for annual week again!"
