The NBA is less of a league now that they've lost a logo of a dribbling dinosaur. Just saying.

The Toronto Raptors:

Started from the top....

...Now we're here.

Says it all... On what planet is this an upgrade?

On the same planet, where these...

Are replaced by this:

Had to check if this was the 'Unpopular Opinions' board haha. I think it's pretty unanimous around here that the "Pac-Man" logo is vastly superior to the full-winged Hawk they were using since the '90s. It has so much history to Atlanta, and the work on it is minimalistic. But the best kind, just enough so you can visually make out the target, but not enough to befuddle it up.

Hey...give Toronto credit...they had a roundel logo before it was cool!

Pac-Hawk is right there along with the J-Note as a wonderful secondary that has no business being the primary, especially with their new set. Shoot, the fact that most people read it as something else entirely (which is how it got its nickname) makes it a bad primary logo. There was nothing wrong with keeping the full-bodied hawk (though it does need some cleaning-up, slightly too busy) as the primary, and using the Pac-Hawk (with an outline or two) as the secondary. That's really what secondaries are for, to go on places where a full logo wouldn't work (such as the jersey). As it is, the Hawks now have a logo that totally clashes with their look (and is actually a tad bit too traditional for the original 'Nique set), and is, IMO, the biggest flaw in their set.

Sorry, this is totally off-topic. Okay, the full-bodied hawk and the Pac-Hawk are analogous to the cartoon Raptor and the old ball-n-claw - one was created to be a strong primary, while the other serves as a secondary mark to use in situations where the primary wouldn't fit (such as the jersey, smaller merchandise, etc.). Ideally you'd want something like the Pelicans' logo, which is a little bit of both, but those aren't easy to make. The strong primary/secondary combo is something that works very well for basketball. Something like the Raptors' new logo works better as a primary in another sport, such as football.

There, that's better. :P

Tradition is the foundation of innovation, and not the enemy.

So does that mean, that since the Bulls logo can be flipped and seen as a robot reading a book that, that also makes it a bad logo? People will find an image from anything. The Hawks just did the cool thing and embraced it. It's The Pac-Hawk now and forevermore. It's not hard to tell what it should be, it's just fun to say, "Hey it also looks like this!".

It's a damn good logo, and the newest pac-hawk really lessened on the original stylings which lead to it kinda resembling Pac-man.

Other than the colors, the previous Hawks logos were great. The full winged bird was a thing of beauty, and the hawk head was pretty solid as well. That being said, the Pac Hawk logo stomps on those other logos. It's so simple yet so so SO effective.

On the topic of the Hawks, it seems that in the last 5 years, a good portion of NBA teams are returning to their roots design-wise, and the Hawks are just another example. Switching back to the pac-man identity probably has less to do with whether the pac-man logo is better or worse than the full-bodied hawk, and more to do with nostalgia (retro never goes out of style) and the fact that pac-man was a really strong identity in its simplicity. It looks good anywhere, big or small, and people have always loved it.

The Sixers, Warriors, Jazz, and possibly the Pistons are others that have gone back to their original look or colors (although in some cases it was just as much about ridding themselves of over-the-top 90's designs and going back was an easy decision).

Bringing this thing full circle back to the Raptors, just like those teams above returned to their old 60's, 70's, or 80's looks, I think it will be nice if in 10 years the Raptors realize that this new identity is very weak and that the original 90's dribbling dino will always be their strongest look and return to it or some variation of it. Being a 90's team, the Raptor can get away with it more than others.

What I don't get, is why the NBA is catering to the 30+ audience with its visual identities, which I can't tell for sure, but doubt that is the biggest age group following the league. When will be our turn (20-somethings), after 10 years?

When we're in our 30s and have the disposable income to drop on NBA gear that we didn't have in our 20s?

The Hawks are like an NBA version of the Canucks. If you count the baby blue era, they're on their 5th colour scheme. I don't understand why they insist on wearing the black uniform full time when they've never had one before.

Fair enough. Although, I'm not totally sure we will have the same desire to own that gear then.

True, and I was thinking of that right after I posted that. But then again, I've seen quite a few new dads rocking sports team gear. More T shirts than jerseys, though.

By, yeah. CREAM.
