dfwabel 4,155 Posted March 21, 2010 This is the greatest thread in the history of Sports in General. Finally, the shackles of realignment have been loosed. I will subscribe to this thread & enjoy it like hell. This is almost as good as the Nutcracker thread.12 hours in, this is very underwhelming to me. I have another opinion on the "some of you are monkeys", line, but...

IceCap 22,331 Posted March 22, 2010 How can you like the state of these leagues as they now exist? To be perfectly honest, the NFL is near perfect as-is. MLB could stand to shuffle a few teams around, but they aren't too bad.
Lights Out 4,906 Posted March 22, 2010 The NFL, NBA and NHL are fine the way they are. But the MLB hasn't yet realized that the three other major leagues have actually evened out the teams in each division by now. I mean, do they realize how ridiculous it is to have only four teams in the AL West when there are six teams in the NL Central?Anyway, FanHouse came up with an interesting idea in this post: have the MLB work like European soccer, with an A league and a B league - contenders go in the A league, and underachievers go in the B league.

I mean, do they realize how ridiculous it is to have only four teams in the AL West when there are six teams in the NL Central?MLB could stand to be reworked, but what they have now is workable. Of course the first thing they need to do is balance out the number of AL and NL teams. Once they do that they can start thinking about divisional realignment. Anyway, FanHouse came up with an interesting idea in this post: have the MLB work like European soccer, with an A league and a B league - contenders go in the A league, and underachievers go in the B league. It's an interesting idea, but it would never work. That setup is familiar with, and thus accepted by, European sports fans. As a concept it's completley foreign to North American sports fans, and thus would never fly.

There's always a few surprise teams, and even fans in Pittsburgh have to have some hope (at least on opening day) that this can be their year. Having an A and B league effectively eliminates half of the league before the season even starts, making it unlikely that people are going to turn out, even in the beginning. Why would I want to go to games for what is effectively a minor league team?
