NHL’s New Seattle Kraken Announce Name & Logos

The Seattle Karens would have been scarier for a name.

Kraken is going to be the Raptors. When the mood changes they'll be stuck with a name they don't want. At least Wild is so vague and encompassing that you can do whatever you want with it.

A decent, albeit somewhat silly, identity for Seattle's new AHL team, though the hidden sea creature draws immediate comparisons to the Cleveland Monsters.

*touches earpiece* Oh. Ohhhhh.

The uniforms are very nice, and are bolstered by a complete absence of the team's name. In that regard, they are a marginal notch above the Minnesota Wild. That's the best I'm willing to offer right now. The team name means the identity tops out at 31st.

I don't think the name makes it to 2030.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

I think that's a great point.  The Tampa Bay Devil Rays were able to shorten to Rays, and now, they're almost ambiguous (outside of the Rays hat they've reintroduced) as to if they're the sunRAYS (with that yellow beam) or animal RAYS.  They can play around with it.  You can't mess with Raptors.  Or Kraken.  It's a thing.  There's no ambiguity.

They're either going to be the Kraken or not.  Strangely enough, the Raptors have basically ditched everything on their uniform outside of the name and the little slash ball logo to let you know they're a team named after a dinosaur.  Does Seattle go that way in 20 years?

Blech.  Logo is cool.  Uniform is...fine?  I mean, it's not garish, fine.  But major swing and miss at what they had.  They had a beautiful salmon and it's a tertiary, barely there color.  Dark colored uniform.

There were better options out there.  The uniform isn't bad...but it's a miss from me.

No salmon. Just red.

I'm so dissapointed, honestly. The jerseys look sick, but uuuuugh, the name is such a terrible choice. Sounds like a minor-league club or some kind of roller hockey team, not a professional sports franchise.

It doesn't even have any local connection, it's just trying way too hard to be "cool".

Again...

I’m irrationally angry at this. I don’t even know what else to say other than I have no idea how a group of extremely smart people lock themselves in a room and decide on this Mickey Mouse bull****. It’s like when old people (I’m old too) try to be cool. This is an SPHL name/identity at best, and I have no idea how that’s not apparent to everyone involved in the decision making process.

They decided on this because the fans told them that’s what they wanted (something new and unique that’s not tethered to the past). Seems to be going over well where it matters.

Yes I'm making a strawman by saying me not liking something makes me a curmudgeon. But you're completely logically sound by screeching and crying and saying anyone not liking a thing is just bitter.

Dude, who is screeching and crying? Calm down. Go take 5. Have a Snickers.

If you don't like it, you don't like it. Nobody is making you like it. I don't love it, but it's fine. But CCSLC gonna CCSLC, piling on like this is the worst thing since the last worst thing.

Positives:

  • fine - a lot of "fine" in this overall brand
  • anchor/space needle is clever
  • it could've been a lot worse

Negatives:

  • Kraken is a stupid-ass name
  • really got brave by going almost entirely navy, what a ballsy design choice
  • the primary S tentacle with the random eye doesn't make much sense to me
  • this looks overall like a pretty solid Dribbble concept or a minor league squad

This is my exact train of thought.

On the colors, scrolling through the website, the logo section really shows how much more exciting this would have been if they had hinged the brand on the ice blue, instead of the navy.

Can I get an actual Kraken alt logo or something. I Like the space needle incorporated into the anchor, but come on we need some kind of sea monster.

It looks like they're going for more of a vague nautical brand than a sea monster specifically, which I think is the way to go. There's going to be fog in the players' tunnel when they come onto the ice, not a giant squid. The main logo subtly hints at the monster & the secondary doesn't portray it at all.

I'm with most other posters who see this as another Minnesota Wild. A minor league name with a major league brand. With Buffalo switching back to royal next year that leaves us with only Columbus & Winnipeg wearing navy at home, so the colours are unique enough (although I'd prefer it if they tweaked the powder blue just a bit more towards green). Funny that we got back to back expansion teams opting out of using any white striping at home.

Yeah, I can see it's "Red Alert" now, but on the website it looked more...salmony-red.  Could just be my screen.  Either way...I think that color could have been amazing as a primary.

They’re already there. The logo is but a slight reference to the name. The tentacle is the only thing that reminds one that the name references a mythical sea monster.

It’s insane to me that Seattle now has a WHL hockey team who’s branding package is exponentially more professional sounding than their NHL team.

God, ok I’m done. I won’t subject y’all to my rants any longer. I’m just blown away how much of a farce this whole thing has been. We waited this long for THAT garbage? Wow,

I actually am liking the name more and more.  The video and branding sure helped.  I was worried that Kraken would cause the branding be too extreme and over the top.

Avalanche, Kraken, next on NBC....

Sounds good to me.
