How good is this guy? Good enough that if he’s cut it’s clearly because of this and not performance / cap reasons?

That's a tricky question because he's 28 years old and was cut once before. He's not a pro-bowler, but he'd be a reliable contributor for any defensive line unit in the NFL. The Browns cut him before 2019, but I think that was a crowded dline room situation, and then he had a decent season with the 2019 Bucs. Raiders gave him 16 million guaranteed because they're the Raiders, but I feel like he's in a good spot to stay with the team. He's 6'7" and thick and should stick around for a while just based on that alone.

He could be a starter on some teams throughout the league. That being said, I personally would say he is best suited as a rotational defensive end. And that is not meant to be a knock on him - getting to the QB is important and you need a 3rd or 4th guy to rotate in that keeps everyone fresh. Generally speaking I would say he is better at stopping the run, but he is by no means a liability as a pass-rusher. He has started about half the games over his NFL career and has been on the field for roughly half the snaps, so based on that I would think my analysis is not too far off.

Summary - he is a big guy (like 6-6, 6-7), possesses enough athletic skill, and has put up solid numbers during his career. He absolutely belongs in the NFL and will have a nice career.

Not sure how well that will cut and paste, but those are his Football Reference stats. While he's no Ken Anderson, he's clearly providing value as an NFL player.

Partially. When John Dorsey became the GM he famously said the previous regime didn't draft any "real football players" and Nassib was one of those draft picks from the previous regime. Dorsey wanted to bring in his guys, so he reached for Chad Thomas in the third round and kept him over Nassib. Chad Thomas is now out of the league.

Ten or even 20 years ago, conventional wisdom was that the first openly gay North American men's team sport athlete was likely to be a star because nobody's cutting someone good enough to play in an all-star game.

Instead, progress ended up being more gradual with retired and semi-retired players (Jason Collins) and now that so much has happened over the years in terms of acceptance (in general society, that is), it almost makes sense that it's a non-star...there's normalization that kind of opens the door to anyone. That said, this is still very rare in North American means team sports and it shows that no matter how much someone wants to suggest it's no big deal, it is. The "big 4" talk a good game about acceptance, but that probably cannot make up for 1) the locker room and 2) the (social) media.

At this point, it certainly looks like he belongs on a roster given that he's appeared in at least 14 games a year for the past five years.  I expect to see him on the field as a Raider; I kinda think we're at the point at which a team is not going to cut a guy for this...and I'm usually more cynical than that...

I think it’s pretty obvious that Kapernaek was blackballed, but the fact he wasn’t a star does at least give some people an argument that he wasn’t good enough to get signed and his declining ability mattered more than his protesting. I’m just trying to figure out if this guy is good enough that if he’s cut, he’s definitely get signed again and there’s not that doubt “yeah he’s gay, but the real reason is he’s not good.”

Good for Carl Nassib, being a pro athlete in a major sport seems like it would be hard enough work and come with so much added bullshirt at the best of times that I truly can't imagine doing it whilst also feeling like you have to hide/aren't allowed to be your truest self, as members of the LGBT+ community have for decades. I also think it's hugely positive more generally that even in the six or so years since Michael Sam things have moved on enough that Nassib coming out was a) seemingly pretty widely accepted and b) in the nicest possible way, not that big of a news story, especially in comparison to how Sam seemed to be in the headlines for weeks.

I think if he does get cut, there will be plenty of apologists for the league and team that cuts him, and for the fact that no other team picks him up (if that becomes the case). He may even be accused of using this as a preventative measure because he thought he might get cut and this could put pressure on a team to keep him.

So your question is a good one. And while I don’t know much about this player, I do think that in the NFL, there are very few players who could get blackballed without plausible deniability. Players are considered old at about his age and he’s already probably had a longer career than most. So if he ends up no longer playing, that and the fact that he’s only a contributor (as opposed to a starter) is probably enough in the eyes of a lot of fans.  Most NFL players are fairly replaceable.

Solid Browns move 😜

John Dorsey will stock a roster with talent (his last 1st round pick with KC was Mahomes after all), but he’ll leave a hell of a bill after he leaves.

Anyway, good for Nassib, now he should go produce now that the burden of hiding his true self has been lifted.

$10 Million feels like a slap on the wrist.

While I too agree they need to do more (like stripping the team from Snyder) but it is 10x larger than the next closest fine the NFL has ever given out.

I’m pretty sure this dude is done with football and wants to spend the majority of his time island hopping in the South Pacific with Shailene Woodley. I mean, who could blame him?

I’m pretty sure he’s mentally done with it all. Losing in the NFC Championship is not worth the head trauma and dealing with a crappy front office.

I'll guarantee he's under center (or shotgun) for the Packers in Week 1 of the 2021 NFL season.

It's where I sit.
