MLB 2023 Uniform/Logo Changes

I still think we got spoiled by the first three uniforms to come out. The Red Sox opened by nailing the "City" part with something that strongly connects to the city and is well designed. Was that uniform part of their brand in 2021? No. But it absolutely is now, and that's how traditions are born. Then, we got the Marlins with their bold design connecting to the culture of the community. It's a set that is absolutely more "Miami" than what the team wears now on a day-to-day basis. After that, it was the White Sox in all black with the "Southside" uniforms that created the perfect hybrid between the existing brand and the city.

All three uniforms added something meaningful to the existing brand while connecting to the city. Many of the ones we've gotten since have seemed stale in comparison.

Of all the City Connects so far, these are the ones that I would classify as "good" or better:

  • Red Sox
  • Marlins
  • White Sox
  • Mariners
  • Angels
  • Rockies
  • Braves
  • Astros
  • Royals

Some could use tweaks, but overall I think they're good. The rest are anywhere from "meh" to "garbage"

Totally going homer here, but Milwaukee ought to be on that list of 'good or better'.

Wait...people actually think the Red Sox city connects look good?

I will always contend that it was a mistake by Nike to launch the City Connect program with Boston's set. It was too polarizing of a design. If City Connect had been announced alongside, say, the White Sox, Marlins or even Cubs designs, I think that would've made it a lot easier for fans to accept some of the more outside the box designs like Boston or San Diego later on.

I agree that’s a homer take because they don’t look good. The cap is horribly executed by trying to combine MKE and 414. The sleeve patch is a backyard grill. They could have been good but ended up making several stupid mistakes along the way, like most other City Connects. Pass.

And yet that sleeve patch is beloved here.

You're not wrong about cramming the 414 into the MKE, but I guess that is part of the City Connect brand.

I knew I forgot one...that Marlins Sugar Kings (?) inspired CC is pretty nice on its own. Beyond that, though...yeah, a whole bunch of somewhere between "meh" and "naww dawg".

I said awhile ago and I’ll say it again now. None of these City Connect unis have been good. Not a single one. They’ve ranged from “Oh, that’s weird, but not awful I guess” to straight up

None of these have been valuable enough to keep in the current rotation. It’s all been convoluted garbage that’ll end up selling for discount at Ross in big numbers.

Ok, I agree some of the designs have fallen flat, but I fail to see how the Marlins CC is not good. It uses their current colors so well and just has all the pop and the pinstripes feel (I am aware they are not) like a nice nod to the OG uniforms. It just comes together as such a great look.

Still nowhere near as good as their main set. The Southside wordmark kills it.

Again, not terrible in a vacuum, but still pretty goofy and just doesn’t fit the Marlins that well imo.

I’ll admit those two in particular are probably the two best sets to come from this series. But both of those have the same thing in common. They were towards the very top of this set, and also some of the very first released. It’s been basically all downhill from there. And if those two sets are the best you can do in a league wide uniform program, it’s probably time to scrap them and move on.

I said this before, but I enjoy the Angels CC. I also think the Rockies, Nationals, and Red Sox are good uniforms and fit the program perfectly. I'd even go out on a limb and say I like the Rockies CC better than their normal set which is so f'ing boring.

The White Sox and Marlins nailed it, in my opinion. If the White Sox ever want to update their uniforms, they should base them off the City Connects.

Seattle and Colorado were also thisclose to getting it right but flubbed the color schemes.
