Fanatics is just a retail brand, so this really comes down to who they choose for suppliers. And if the game-worn jerseys are going to be made at the same place where they're made now, then I'm not sure I'd put a lot of stock in the idea that their quality concerns will carry over.

Yeah, I wouldn’t worry too much about the on-ice product becoming slapstick levels of poor quality. I’d bet if New Era got the contract that they would’ve used the same facility for authentics.

feels like it’ll be more the regrets of giving Fanatics even more control over the merch pipeline and supplies. Like “MLS teams ordering all their merch from Adidas in one go at the start of the season” levels of messiness, and if you do somehow get to order your favorite team’s jersey or jacket or whatever, you’ll also get a bedazzled Yankees tank top in your order*

It does, however, beg the question of whether Fanatics plans to now get involved in things like textile innovation and performance design. With an Adidas/Nike/Reebok, etc., those functions are built in. But Fanatics, from what I can tell, plays mostly in high-margin fan apparel. While they can certainly contract with a manufacturer capable of manufacturing quality, the real question becomes whether they invest in in-house design and R&D operations to enhance the performance quality of uniforms.

Is the NHL like the NFL at all where one or two companies really make the on field (ice) jerseys (like http://www.riponathletic.com/) and they just slap a Nike logo on it? It could just be that the people who make the jerseys take the same and they slap a Fanatics logo on it.

That’s what a UNI-watch article was saying. They plan on using the same adidas plant for making the jerseys until something new comes up is how I understood it

NHL executive vice president of marketing Brian Jennings acknowledged that fans might only know Fanatics as a company that makes replica gear rather than game-worn jerseys, which could lead to challenges in perception about the league's new authentic jersey maker.

"It's fair. I understand there may be, initially, some trepidation, but I do have a lot of confidence in the team at Fanatics," Jennings said. "I look back at the history with our locker room, at what they're doing with other leagues, and I do think that they will be able to do this."

Jennings said part of that confidence is in how Fanatics is approaching the task. It has senior executives in place with experience launching game-worn jerseys at Reebok and Adidas. Fanatics also doesn't plan on reinventing the jersey -- at least initially. They'll use the same factory based in Saint-Hyacinthe, Quebec, that Adidas did to produce its jerseys. The specs for the jerseys will be exactly the same. While there will be differences in some of the fabrics and materials, "it will be almost indiscernible" to the jerseys currently in use, said Jennings.

The NHL indicated that the first significant changes to its on-ice jerseys could be in the 2026-27 season, when different fabric options and player safety innovations like protection against skate lacerations might be introduced.

This is a disaster. Simple as that.

i don’t care what factory they use for jerseys. Anything with a fanatics tag comes back with horrendous quality, and their customer support is beyond atrocious.

may the jerseys still look about the same on ice? Maybe. But everything else merch wise from a fan perspective is about to plummet.

And yes, I know fanatics already made a lot of off-ice merch, but that quality sucked already too

You know it's bad when even the casual fans who react to every new jersey with the fire emoji are pissed.

ESPN has posted a follow up article with a bit more info.

That design process can be an intense and lengthy one, which is why the NHL will ask teams to put a hold on uniform overhauls for the time being. Jennings said that outside of anniversary jerseys that have to be produced in a timely manner, teams will likely hold off on any major redesigns until after Fanatics is "up and running" as the official uniform maker.

"You'll probably see minimal changes. We'll ask the teams for their cooperation in that," he said. "We want to make sure that we're delivering a high-quality product and not have any types of delays. Designing or redesigning a uniform is where a lot of times the biggest delays happen."

I guess this means a team like the Ducks are stuck in their current look for at least a few more years, unless they've already started the rebrand process in time for next season.

Uniforms won't even survive their first hit or slash 😆

Guys will look like Lacrosse players out there with elbow pads exposed when they get slammed into the boards once…

Seriously though, I don’t expect much of a change in ON ICE quality right away, given that the article on NHL.com says they’ll still use the Quebec manufacturer. But the larger merchandise might really really suck. Buying a jersey as a fan might really suck, especially since we know what the fanatics replicas look like.

My only hope is that Fanatics will change up the collars to look a little more traditional. I’m also hoping there’s no odd changes like Under Armors stupid half shoulder yokes, (See UMD hockey) or sleeve and tail stripes stopping halfway on the sides of the jersey a la Michigan hockey.

At least it's not Nike?

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This feels like the outcome of a monkey's paw wish

"I wish the NHL jersey contract doesn't go to Nike..."

It's not a good look when your new jersey supplier has to go "ok guys please don't give us anything hard to do we still don't really know how to do this."

Oh well. The NHL is now and has perpetually been a trash league. If you spend your hard earned money on their garbage merchandise and it sucks, that’s your fault and you should feel ashamed. Get a better hobby than hockey, you ruffians.

Spoiler

😝

In times like these, I'm happy I can just buy a 90s CCM Penguins jersey off ebay if I want another one since they wear pretty much the same thing now.

Just bought a Reebok Canadiens jersey not 30 minutes ago!

Was it at least in your size? LOL!!!!

The bedazzledness wasn’t the issue, i just can’t trust a company that let a piece of Yankees paraphernalia violate my sacred space

I'd have to agree with you on that. at least I can pass something like that off to my daughter who doesn't care as long as she likes the design.
