The obvious downside is that bowl games that used to mean something have now become mostly obliterated between opt outs and players hitting the transfer portal between the last reg season game and the bowl game...bowl week used to be a marquee event, now it feels like a huge waste of time, which is a shame.

 

Remember those ESPN "Most wonderful time of the year" ads, where they celebrated all of the second-tier bowl games?

 

Really feels like that's a long bygone era.

The second tier bowls are basically filler programming now.

Then they can make up for letting them down by giving each $10k after they sign their contract.

 

I get it.  If you're a competitor, it's hard to choose not to compete, and it's obviously a personal decision, and I assume they're aware of and accept the risks.  Can't blame a guy for wanting to finish what he started.  As a regular guy and not their teammate, I just also can't blame anyone for quitting even before the end of the regular season.  That's all I'm sayin.

I know bowl games are advertising for the sponsors, but I think the announcers for the Duke's Mayo Bowl have talked about mayonnaise more than the game. I can understand with blowouts, but West Virginia didn't go up by 17 until just now. Who's announcing the Pop Tarts Bowl?

It really is a bit strange. Most of the games feel the name is overused to get it onto air. But, the cutbacks to the announcers trying different flavored mayos just feels like 'infomercial mixed with football'.

So what are the thoughts of Chase Field and Petco Park being laid out as football fields from the Guaranteed Rate Bowl and Holiday Bowl?  We're going to see Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park as football fields upcoming.

It’s nothing new and would prefer them to be at purpose built football stadiums for those in attendance to have a better experience, atleast Fenway and Yankee stadium are historical/ memorable parks. Chase field and Petco park are no different than any other. What other thoughts are we suppose to have.

I like it. This used to be the norm for NFL teams into the 1970's, so it's a bit of a throwback that works. I'm surprised Snapdragon wasn't used for the Holiday Bowl, but I think Petco sits more people and the locals prefer it due to location.

The Holiday Bowl signed a 5 year deal to play at Petco Park starting in 2022.

This whole time I thought they were literally taking the Pop Tart costume that the mascot had been wearing all day and were eating it, which obviously makes no sense, but it doesn't mean I'm not disappointed by it.

That was awesome getting to watch Mizzou beat Ohio State in my first ever trip to Texas. Now staying at a (meh) Motel 6 across the street from the stadium, which is the entire view from our window.

I'm glad I didn't make the drive up, because that was the most boring game I've watched all year. The OL didn't even bother to do a dang thing and there were no adjustments all night.

We’ve seen guys opt out of big games before, but I think this year is probably the breaking point for opt outs. Mentality seems that if I’m not playing for a National Championship, why would I bother risking injury in ANY other meaningless game to make this school that isn’t paying me even more money? I can’t say I disagree with that. I’m starting to get the feeling that the bowl committee leaving out FSU was the final straw for a lot of these guys, and I’m pretty sure it’s gonna ruin the bowl game setup.

The NIL and transfer portal have put a ton more power in the players' hands that didn't exist before.

 

If labor exercising their power means an entire system of exhibition games that don't provide any additional incentives needs to go, then that entire system of exhibition games needs to go.

 

Start giving participation bonuses for these bowl games that are scaled to the level of impact for key players, and then you might have something.

Yeah, next year, with the top 12 teams going to the playoffs, the old bowl system will be true and completely dead. As a general rule, the playoffs will eat up the top 3 or 4 SEC teams, the top 3 Big Ten teams, the top 2 or 3 Big 12 teams, and probably 2 from the ACC.  Throw in Notre Dame most years, and the other bowls will mean even less than they do now.

I actually wonder if the expanded playoff is going to make it even worse. I could see a good handful of prospective first/second round guys looking at the prospect of playing increasingly more difficult/competitive teams for four extra weeks and saying lol nope. Not even a college title is worth the risk of having to play Michigan, Bama, and Georgia (or whoever) three straight weeks.

I don't see a reason for Florida State and UNC to look at joining the Big Ten. I wonder how long these conferences will last when current middle of the pack schools are losing 6-7 games regularly because they aren't able to keep up with old and new money? I also think we could see a 16 team playoff as soon as they can get that done because the P4 need to keep schools happy.
