UFL Team Names & Logos

I think the branding has taken a back seat to the on-field football product, which bodes well for its future. The USFL and XFL were fantastic at marketing - so much so that when the actual product was brought to the public, they took a look at it, sniffed, then walked away. The UFL seems to be doing the opposite here, and that's probably a good thing.

I'll actually disagree with you about the XFL. Their marketing was terrible.

There was a terrible schism within the organization as to whether they were producing a reality show (cameras on the sideline interviewing cheerleaders about their quarterback boyfriends' sexual exploits the night before) or a real football league.

On the one hand, you've got Dick Butkus playing up the on-field product. On the other you had the marketing, pushing away serious football fans with joke names. That's hardly an effective marketing strategy.

I don't know if you've read Long Bomb, but I recommend it if you haven't. Though it gets heavy-handed at times, it also provides some really eye-opening insights into the schism you mentioned. It's also very interesting to note that one of the league's most compelling games, the Week 2 multi-overtime shootout between L.A. and Chicago, all but ensured the league's demise.

That said, even though it was a single-entity league, there were some marketing variances on the team level. I knew someone who went to an Enforcers game, and said it was one of the most fan-friendly sporting events they'd ever been to. On the other hand, you had Legion Field running out of beer midway through the home opener.

For all the bird de lis haters I think the bird de lis isnt supposed to be a pelican and a fleur de lis I think its just a fleur de lis with a pelicans head. Thats what it looks like to me. Also the flair around the tip of the beak is just flair that fleur de lis have sometimes source I am from NOLA.

The idea behind this approach saving them money needs to be supported. Choosing different colors for every team certainly wouldn't make the cost any higher, and choosing a different Gameday uniform template(not that this design is a current Gameday template) would cost the same, if not less depending on the design. I think that big-upping the league over the team is a poor way to build a regional fan base. If they truly want fans they will approach it differently, but if they are just looking for people to tune into their games on TV when searching for NFL games, they might be onto something. And this argument, "They know they will probably fail, so they are trying to lose the smallest amount of money they need to." needs to stop. If you are trying to be successful at something you do not make a half-arsed attempt at it just so you don't lose anything if you fail. Imagine if President Obama had taken that approach with his candidacy, or if a new TV channel only aired movies they could show royalty free so they wouldn't lose much money. You can't get anywhere if you don't take any steps forward. Right now they seem to be running in place.

I think the main reason these jerseys aren't being so well received is the colors. You guys make a good point about the league branding. If the UFL wants every team to use the same template then fine, but I just hope that they change the colors by next season (if there is one). Electric blue and lime green aren't exactly the most appealing colors to see on a football field.

To tell you the truth, had the XFL been around when I was 21, I would've probably gone to a game every weekend just for the sheer insanity of it all.

Las Vegas is terrible a picking team names. The Wranglers. (It has completely nothing to do with the LV area.) The 51's. ( <_< ) And now the Locomotives!

I'm sorry, how were the 51s a bad name?

1. It's a milatary base.

2.It sounds ridiculous to pluralize it.

3.It's a number.

The 49ers and 76ers would beg to differ. ^_^

Why not the 51ers then? Believe it or not, that sounds a heck of a lot better than the 51s.

I dunno, alien abduction perhaps?

..but back on topic, similar league-wide uniforms or not, I feel its the level of play will truly be what makes this league succeed. People (in general) want a quality product for as little cash as possible. As long as the UFL puts on good games with guys that never got to showcase their abilities they will be fine in the end.

I also think that the lack of additional colors kinda distances the league from the fans they are trying to attract. From what I've seen thus far, there's no connection - no "this is my team, I want to support it" feel. Just seems like a generic, corporate look that seems cold to me. I mean, sure you have names and "logos" coming soon, but the whole thing just seems lacking; even for a startup league.

Looks like the Rays have invested in the UFL Florida team, and the October 30th game v. Las Vegas will be played in St. Petersburg at Tropicana Field.

Looks like I'll be going to a UFL game after all. I consider going to Orlando, but now that it's in St. Pete makes it even better.

So that means New York will wear black.

Heck, if those PDFs were vector files, we could make the New York style sheet in about five minutes.

Maybe it's just me, but the chest stripe/piping and numbers look much straighter/more horizontal on the actual jerseys than on the style sheets.

Maybe the Rays investing in the Tuskers will only help the league's chances. I hope other ownership groups step forward as well to secure another couple of seasons.

While it makes sense at a league-wide level, the fans need to be put first when branding the teams, and there is no "this is my team" feel to it for this exhibition season.

A red jersey in the same template won't cost any more than a lime green jersey.

Also remember that Mark Cuban is invested with HDNet and has talked about demand for football is bigger than the current supply. The uniforms have more to be desired, but if the product is better than the XFL then I will give it some time. I would make a comment on the AAFL, but it seems that they have not had a presser since...(insert bad joke here)

Mark Cuban also dropped half a million on a rugby field at Indiana University that....doesn't look like half a million was spent on it (for lack of a better phrase).

/Walks past it multiple times in a given week on the way to work.

He has also bought bonds into the UFC in early 2009 (before Fedor's free agency) and said, "They have done a great job building a brand and awareness via their show on Spike. They then leveraged that into an enormous following, which in turn led to the great pay-per-view numbers and have absorbed a lot of losses? to achieve its dominance. ?It won?t be easy for other promotions to compete with the UFC, but it?s certainly possible,? he says.
