Can't take too much credit from the Cards. Their defense looked really solid tonight. I have this really strange feeling that they'll jump either the Seahawks or Niners this year in the NFC West. Unfortunately, I think it's probably gonna be the Niners :(

Gates and the other receivers let Rivers down big time. You can't fault Phillip Rivers when the receiving men couldn't make their routes in time (sans the Romo-esque throw Rivers committed near the end of the 2nd quarter).

And did Gates get fat during the off-season, by the way? I don't remember him being that beefy.

It's so sad seeing Washington, the cowboys, and the Giants being so bad. Really, it's heart breaking.

The NFC East was so good for so long and now it's taken the place as the doormat of the NFC. Philly's going to win this division and may very well be the only NFC East team to finish above .500 this season.

It is sad I agree.

I can't believe his wife supports him...

(CNN) -- Janay Rice, wife of suspended NFL player Ray Rice who was released by the Baltimore Ravens, apparently posted a statement Tuesday on Instagram calling the situation a "nightmare."

"To take something away from the man I love that he has worked his ass off for all his life just to gain ratings is a horrific (sic)," she wrote.

The actions against Ray Rice were taken Monday after a video surfaced showing him knocking her out with a punch in February.

The Instagram post, reported by various media, appeares to be authentic.

It's common for battered women to stick with their men, obviously. And being that she (presumably) loves him, it would be easier for her to forgive such horrible actions than unrelated people who watched that video. I understand her point that she is suffering because of this, as she's losing his contract, too. Even worse, she may have turned on ESPN and saw the video of her getting knocked-out playing multiple times. That can't be good to see.

But other than the misfortune of that happening to her to begin with, I can't feel sorry for her on Rice getting cut. He's made millions in his career. It's not like she's married to some truck driver who lost his job, and will go through the indignity of losing her house because he got arrested. If they're not morons with their money, they can live comfortably for the rest of their lives without Ray having to ever work again. She's not going to be working double shifts as a janitor to support his sorry ass. And of course, I'm speaking of sympathy for her about him getting fired, not about the abuse. The NFL (eventually) did the right thing here. The only shame is that the justice system didn't.

The only shame is that the justice system didn't.

There's really only so much the justice system can do when the adult victim doesn't want to press charges. The NFL pretty much kicked him out of the league, and that along with the lasting infamy is the closest you can get to justice in this particular situation

True, and that's why these situations are so dicey. Most of the time, the victim doesn't want to press charges, anyway, and any punishment given to the perpetrator will be suffered by them. But seeing that video, which law enforcement and the courts had access to, goes beyond just reading "guy hits wife."

I know some states (like Illinois) have a mandatory arrest policy for any domestic dispute calls, meaning one of the two people is getting cuffed. But that gets dicey, too, because sometimes the situation doesn't call for that. A friend of mine's parents had a dispute a decade ago. They were shouting at eachother, and supposedly there was no physical contact other then them angrily grabbing eachother. The mom called the police because she merely wanted them to "scare" the dad, but he ended up getting arrested against her protests. They're still together, and according to my friend, there had never been any kind of physical incidents between them before or since. They're seemingly a happy family, so maybe the situation was different there. Like I said, grabbing an arm in response to getting your arm grabbed is much, much different than punching someone who slapped you. Ultimately, it seems like there should be instances when the courts could prosecute against the will of the victim.

Well TMZ has come out with their earth shattering news and it's that Goodell's office never requested to see the tape. The casino had made copies for police evidence and for Rice's lawyer and the video was available for the NFL but they never asked the casino.

So, incompetance or blind-eye?

I put forth it's a blind-eye: Commish and his underlings did NOT want to know what happened in the elevator. This does not excuse goodell et al from being removed from their positions in the league. If this was any other sports league or company in North America, everyone would have been fired.

That lump under the NFL's rug is getting bigger all the time.

The Cowboys and Giants seem to be going the wrong direction. Tony Romo is becoming more and more reckless with the ball and Eli Manning seems to have lost it in a Rick Ankiel on the mound sort of way.

The Redskins, I wouldn't panic on this season yet. Jay Gruden seemed to be way too conservative in his debut and everyone's adjusting to the new playbook. Grifiin compelted 78% of his passes, but Gruden seemed to only call screens and shot slants. Perhaps he's trying to ease Griffin into being a pocket passer. The offense has too many weapons not to get things rolling. The defense looked vastly improved against Houston, allowing only one TD on a long TD pass to Hopkins. They held Foster in check for the most part. The Mike and Kyle Shanahan situation was just a complete meltdown.

The Redskins need to determine if they want to have a pocket QB (Cousins) or a versatile QB (Griffin) and then game plan around that QB. They cannot continue to have RGIII be a pocket QB when is not that.

Right now, I think it's a lot of rust for Romo. Since this was his first regular season game since last December against Washington. But, he has to stop putting blind faith into his throws and throwing the ball into triple coverage.

I have an interesting take on Tony Romo: how much do you think his issues are part of where he plays and who he plays for?

Put Romo on last year's Bengals or Chiefs- I think they are hypothetically playing at Denver in the AFC-CG.

Imagine him playing for a real defense, with a real coach and general manager, an actual homefield advantage.

He should have fled Dallas after the 2012 finale at DC. Guy would be appreciated so much so if he played for a lot of other teams.
