I hate it when my easy jokes get taken down by research. I guess I've just always found the ~legacy of Tom Yawkey~ to be a little much, regardless of whether or not he was a merciless racist -- point being that while he lit his money on fire and was nice to his players, the Sox had little to show for it in those years. But the current ownership group is no less self-aggrandizing. I would have preferred if they'd just announced they're changing the name for David Ortiz or Pumpsie Green or whomever, rather than John Henry make a show of how tortured he is.

It was just announced that Ichiro will be transitioning with immediate effect to a new position as special assistant to the chairman of the Mariners and is no longer on the 40 man roster.

It’s important to look at figures like Yawkey with nuance and an understanding of different moral values over the decades. However, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t shame certain historical actors for the harm their attitudes caused. Adding a line about Moses Fleetwood Walker on Cap Anson’s plaque would be a good idea.

You’re right about it being Clark and not Calvin. My apologizes on the error there.

 

As for the “shame” comment, ten years ago I would have agreed with this, but part of me wonders if we’re starting to go too far in the other direction.

 

I think movements like MeToo have been positive things that have shined light on dark areas that people didn’t want to admit existsted. But America loves to overcorrect and I’ve never seen any cultural change that didn’t yield unintended consequences.

 

I just know you judge anybody on the worse thing they’ve ever done and nobody is going to look good and I think that’s what’s happening to Tom Yawkey.

 

I also know how my knowledge of the game compares to your average fan and I have a great amount of difficulty understanding what this person was really like and about mainly because he was so private.

 

So when I hear someone call him a bigot with almost complete confidence, it makes me upset because I know they’re basing it on a shred of information that’s out there about him and that’s not fair.

 

To say “well that’s how it goes sometimes” is to forgive laziness and ignorance.

 

I mentioned I only know of one Tom Yawkey biography because I’ve spoken to the guy who wrote it on multiple occasions and even he is undecided on how history should view Tom Yawkey.

 

My only real point is the information out there first before rushing to judgment on someone and I see almost zero effort on anyone’s part to do it.

 

Twitter isn’t a good forum to have this conversation on and I didn’t think to write an article on it, although I may pitch it to the Hardball Times after I submit my next all-time team. But I do think it’s important for people to know about and I think it’s the rare baseball argument who’s implications extend to aspects of life that go beyond the game, which is why I felt to compelled to comment on it in this forum.

Dodgers just took a 1-0 lead over the Padres in the top of the 1st in the opening game of the Mexico series because the Padres lost the ball in the lights. That’s not exactly surprising considering it’s the Padres, but it could end up becoming a problem if they have light issues down there.

The thing that’s frustrating about the Indians is that none of this matters, because 75-87 might be enough to win the division. The whole “let half of the bullpen walk because we can just trade for guys at the deadline and only have to pay them for two months” thing is probably going to work out fine, but it’s silly to watch unfold.

The Reds have acquired Matt Harvey from the Mets in exchange for Devin Mesoraco and cash. Honestly I am quite surprised from this. Harvey will join the Reds later this week in Los Angeles. The Mets are in Cincinnati now playing the Reds.

When I saw the trade come thru my first thought was “wait, Devin Mesoraco makes $13 million?!?”

 

Hopefully a change of scenery can help Harvey get back at least some of what he once had.

 

Also, James Paxton has incredible stuff. If this is the year he can finally stay healthy...
