"Put on for our city."

But you're the flagship university of the state!!!

That is a cool helmet stripe though.

Don't really see why there needs to be yellow in the jersey. A lot of uniforms from the past are a combination of colors that are divided between different elements, but balance in the end.

It could end up looking fine, but d o you have any examples?  There aren't many or any jumping out at me right off the bat

Sparky is the superior helmet logo period. Plus, ASU doesn’t use the fork correctly most of the time anyways. When they use the primary gold helmet with the maroon fork, half of the logo is gold and therefore is lost in the background with skinny maroon outlines. Also, they need to dump the Boise State logo trend with the giant oversized fork on one side and numbers on the other.

Use the fork everywhere else you want, midfield, t shirts, statues, etc whatever but Sparky belongs on the helmet at ASU.

I don't disagree with this in theory, but people have to realize that one of the reasons the university has shied away from using Sparky this decade is because Disney has an issue with it. The university wants absolutely NOTHING to do with a potential C&D from a company that large.

Disney helped to actually come up with our current design package, and they came to that as a compromise that sort of works for everyone. They paid for our design process, and still allow us to use Sparky in some limited capacity. If ASU had fought this, there's the potential that they wouldn't be allowed to use Sparky AT ALL.

Wasn't this mascot controversy Disney trying to update Sparky?

ASU and Oregon are the only 2 schools in the country to have a logo designed by Walt Disney. Our old Stomping Donald logo was only allowed to be used because of a famous photo from the 50's depicting Walt and our AD and other UO staff hanging out wearing Oregon jackets with an old Donald logo on them until an actual contractual agreement was reached much later.

For more information, here you go: an excellent State Press article on the matter.

I'm just surprised that ASU didn't shove their "other" mascot into the conversation.

Not really. They helped us to redesign our mascot as part of their process with our brand (which was scrapped immediately because people HATED it), but that's not really the issue. The issue Disney has with it is that there's a rumor that the logo was designed by a disgruntled former Disney employee who was fired by Walt, and the face used for Sparky is modeled after that of Walt Disney himself. The issue they have is that (even if it's just a rumor) they find the mascot to be disparaging to their founder (Who was also accused by this artist of being anti-semitic), and they don't like that it has the potential to do damage to their mostly sterling, wholesome, family-oriented brand. They probably can't win a suit against the University for several reasons (one of which being the age of the Sparky logo, which they didn't officially take issue with until more than a half century later). It's also a REALLY petty complaint for Disney to have. That being said? They have the resources to tie ASU up in a legal battle they want absolutely NO part in. Plus, Disney was willing to work with the University and even provide some services to them free of charge in exchange for their cooperation. That's kind of hard to turn down.

As :censored:ty as it is, sometimes if you catch the negative attention of the largest multinational mass media company in the world, it's probably better to bend a bit to their will, lest you get crushed under their enormous boot.

There's no way Disney could send a C&D to ASU.

"Please stop using a cartoon logo that, based on a rumor, kinda/sorta looks like our guy if you look hard at it" isn't the strongest legal case.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

I was just told from a third party who knows someone that works for the UGA program that the black jerseys "are a go," then UGA equip Tweets out a photo of the red jerseys saying "Keep the main thing the main thing."

Honestly this is annoying. Just wear them twice a year and stop making it a big deal.

I keep hearing Cheer and Dance teams are wearing black. Will be interesting to see what color Uga is wearing and the pompomps on the hedges are.

They could continue to be trolling and pull an 07. Warm up in red, burst through the G in black.

Yes, but there's no decade old rap song with those lyrics.

I get so annoyed by uniform posts on social media. Basically they have 👀 or 🔥 and then some dumb outdated lyrics like "Woooah Back in Black. Dis straight 🔥🔥🔥👀" They try so hard to be cool.

Mizzou is playing against South Carolina saturday. Both schools are located in cities called Columbia. I heard sports media talking heads refer to this game as the battle for Columbia so I assumed thats what the tweet was alluding to.

It's not the lyrics that are outdated and dumb... it's the people using them in situations that thinks it's cool, which obviously is lame

I'm surprised some marketing genius at ASU hasn't tried to repurpose the words "Sun Devils" as a nickname for desert soldiers, similar to military unit nicknames like Screamin' Eagles, Tropic Lightning or Hell On Wheels.

I could see them going full-on Tillman with a detachment of Sun Devils in desert fatigues and the whole 9 yards.

And I even like Sparky’s pitchfork better than the actual pitchfork logo. The prongs look too curved for my taste, it’s never looked good to me as a stand-alone logo or on the helmet.

Truth be told, both logos depict a trident, not a pitchfork. They need to fix that before they do anything, because there really isn’t much ocean culture in Tempe.

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

Well, to be fair, the devil is often portrayed with a three pronged "pitchfork" or trident, so it's just a play on that theme.

It's not like farming culture is all that huge in Tempe, either. It's just part of the overall theme.

True, but that’s also a byproduct of a lazy colloquialism bending the inherent meaning, function, and/or symbolism in something.

Some tridents are pitchforks, and some pitchforks are tridents, but they’re not necessarily synonyms. In these cases, the barbs are what make them fishing tridents (that’s what prevents the fish from sliding off the tines when you pull it out, whereas ag forks are typically designed to slide cleanly in and out of dirt or hay, with the spacing and number of tines varying depending on the intended function).
