That's because that was for an exact throwback. When they decided to go back to those uniforms full time they weren't obligated to match every specific detail and were free to make tweaks or "fixes" to the original that they thought worked better as a full-time primary uniform. That's probably why they did what they did and not because of some rule against wearing throwbacks full time. I don't think that rule exists in the NFL.

If you go back an read my initial post on the matter that was my entire point. Rule or no rule, you get the same end result with both leagues.

Not the same result at all.

The NBA wouldn't let the Hornets go back to a previous uniform, so they had to start from scratch and came up with an entirely new uniform.  The 49ers went back to their old uniform with such minor changes that the average fan wouldn't notice the difference.

Did they have to or choose to? My understanding is that you can't do a complete reversion to old uniforms/marks but  but the Jazz, Pistons, Sixers clearly show that you can revive an old identity if you modernize it slightly. This would lead me to believe that since they could not do an exact copy they opted for a clean sheet but the design is definitely intended to invoke the original.

I'm going to stand by my original point. With so much emphasis on branding/design in this era of sports merchandising, it's extremely unlikely that a team will completely revive a previous look without making some minor design changes regardless if there are rules in place.

I believe the Hornets said at the time that they were not allowed to adopt their old logos outright. But I don't have a source on that.

And be in any case, that doesn't have anything to do with the NFL.

Yeah they claimed that but I'm not sure I believe it. The Hawks brought back the Pac Man logo.

The NFL also REALLY didn't want the Browns to not have a logo in 1999 and put through a bunch to try to get the team to bite. But, they kept it sans logo. One of the reasons they came out with the Dawg Pound logo and later the < b > and the dawg head logo.

It's a new Pac Man logo, though, and it's in a different color scheme. The throwback merchandise for the original Hornets is still a top seller, and the team ended up going back to basically the same colors, so the league wasn't going to let them limit sales by reproducing gear that's already for sale.

A better example would be the Sixers. They went back to the old logo, then tweaked it. But I don't think the Sixers had huge throwback sales to begin with, and also the jerseys are "honoring their past" by wearing uniforms they've never worn before. Plus, the Sixers are the actual franchise that used the logo previously, while the Hornets aren't.

The shiny blue that the Giants use on their helmets would look pretty cool with some athletic gold ram horns on it.

yeah and considering the Giants and Rams had the same issue of navy blue helmets paired with royal blue everything else that is what I hope they go with. But it'll be 2019 so by then who knows what'll be the dumb new helmet trend. Maybe a horn on one side and a number on the other like so many stupid college teams.

I have a feeling that fan response will be so overwhelming that they'll move up the timetable for the classic colors from 2019 to, like, next year.
