you can definitely tell the difference in atmosphere based off the package.  I work in gameday operations at Lambeau and when we're looking to pump up the crowd we do mention "it's a Gold package day" meaning it's not as loud. It's not every Gold game, but a great majority of them.

Interesting. I hear the opposite from fans and media.

It's where I sit.

Sorry - I assumed it was common knowledge around here.

1 - I'm a season ticket holder at Lambeau. I sit in Section 19 (now known as 119 after the 1994 renovation, but I've had this nom de plume for a long time and ain't changing it) Row 53.  I have been a ticket holder for most of my life (back to around 1972).

2 - I'm from the Green Bay area although I live closer to Milwaukee today.

3 - When the team still played in Milwaukee and Green Bay, there were two different season ticket holder groups - you either had tickets in GB or Mil.  The NFL set the schedule, including which games were played in either location/venue.

4 - As Lambeau was being renovated, it became a better venue for paying, financially, playing surface, and amenities for the teams. As teams started requesting to NOT play the Packers in Milwaukee, a decision was made to move all games to Lambeau.

5 - So what? Bob Harlan determined that Milwaukee ticket holders would maintain their tickets at Lambeau Field, and that they would be assigned the second and sixth (later becoming the fifth) home game of the season, as well as one of two pre-season games.  This means that there are TWO different season ticket bases for the Packers. Those who have the Green Bay package (like me) are the "Green" package. Those who have the Milwaukee package are the "Gold" package.

6 - So, because it is known which ticket base is at which game, it is an easy step to make judgments based on the atmosphere created by the fans. Having attended a few "Gold" games, I don't argue in the accuracy of how the differences are described. Regardless, the people in attendance are different. Also, keep in mind that EVERY DAMN TICKET is sold out to a season ticket holder (ok - that's a lie. Tickets added in the most recent expansion allowed for residents of Brown County, who pay/paid a County Tax to help fund the renovation, could enter a lottery annually for the chance to be assigned one game to get 4 tickets. That game might be regular season or pre-season).

If you have more questions, fire away. I think this covers it, though.

Interesting, thanks for the insight! I had gathered from your display name you were a season ticket holder but this is the first I’ve heard of different ticket groups. It’s on my bucket list to make a trip to Lambeau at some point so I’ll have to keep that in mind when I decide which game to attend.

That's great info - I had no idea.  Is there loopholes where you could be both green and gold without having to go to the secondary market?

Sort of. If you had tickets in both venues before the announcement was made, you were a ticket holder for what became the green and gold packages. You would have continued to have both packages. I know one holder like that -- he sat behind me (RIP Erv). His family now has his seats, so they have tickets to all the games.

Oh -- one other way. Luxury suites are for the full season. The new south endzone structure (from the most recent renovation in 2013) are single packages, as well, since they came I to existence after County Stadium was done.

It's where I sit.

How do they allocate playoff tickets to season ticket holders?

I still don't have a website, but I have a dribbble now! http://dribbble.com/andyharry

Green package holders have dibs. When we pay for tickets for the upcoming season (March or April), you either commit to buying playoff tickets then or you don't.  If you do, you pay for the tickets as soon as a playoff game is scheduled at Lambeau.  If you don't,  someone else gets your tickets-- most likely from the Gold package. Whoever has "my" seats in the Gold package would get whatever seats they are assigned (random draw, I would guess) if they said yes to tickets.

It hasn't always been done this way, but Green Bay ticket holders have always had priority.

I am a "Gold" season ticket holder but am fortunate enough to have enough family from Green Bay where I have been to more "Green" games than "Gold" games strictly due to the numbers (either through family having the Green package or getting the Brown County Tax tickets). I agree with the idea that "Gold" games have a quieter atmosphere. I've noticed within the last 5 years that there are more away fans during the Milwaukee ticket games as well, which I assume comes from fans not wanting to drive up to Green Bay from the Milwaukee area so they sell them online.

But the idea that there are two different atmospheres definitely has some legitimacy to it

Ok, so I have absolutely no idea how this works, but can you just go on Stubhub and get Packers tickets like you can any team, or is it unusually hard/expensive to go to a Packers game if you’re not from Wisconsin?

My parents didn’t seem to have any issues the last couple years. But I’m not sure.

Sure - tickets are always sold. In the area near me, there is a mother and daughter (Mary and Shelly) who sit in front of us, Erv's family who sit behind us, Chuck and his family 2 seats to my right. The rest of the people are different every game. The five seats between me and the aisle are owned by a packaging company in Green Bay (locals can guess who that is). It's never been the same people in those seats -- I always talk to them and it is invariably their first time there.

It's where I sit.

Interesting. I always knew of the Milwaukee crowds having a reputation for being rowdier. But I can also see how we're now far enough removed from games actually being played in Milwaukee that its come full circle.

Have the Packers ever made any attempt to phase out the gold season ticket package? Not sure if it’s feasible to entirely do away with it, but maybe as gold season ticket holders give up their seats, offer those games to the green ticket holder for a full-season package?

It’s just wild to me that the Packers still have two separate groups of season ticket Holders when they haven’t split games between venues in over 25 years.

Does GB care that a lot of their season tickets go up on the aftermarket sites? If they ever wanted to Phase out a certain group, they may need to check IDs and make sure the real ticket holders show up atleast twice. I've been a football fan for decades and never knew about all this.

Since tickets aren't 1:1 between Green and Gold, it isn't that easy. For example, I have seats 16-19. The Gold package might have someone who owns seats 16-17, and someone else who owns 18-19. Heck, it could be someone owns 15-18, and someone else with 19-24

The Packers target their season ticket price to be around 10-15 in terms of average in the NFL, adjusting prices essentially annually now. In order to do something like this, they would have to start pulling tickets from holders, and that would give them blowback that they don't want. Think of the crap that got flung at the Broncos for suggesting such a thing, and then acting on it.

Hmm - I have an idea for a followup to some of this. Later when I have more time.

Keep the questions coming (maybe this needs to be a separate thread -  I dunno)

I'm not sure any team requires season ticket holders to show up to a minimum number of games.

Once you buy the tickets...you can do whatever you want with them.

Smart is believing half of what you hear. Genius is knowing which half.

There is a precedent though.

Horribly short-sighted policies though. and it seems like the Broncos had a hard time coming up with justification for the policy with regards to lost revenue.
