No I am wondering why the Hail Mary play has been all but extinct in the NFL.  Against the Commanders a few weeks ago, the Packers tried that stupid play instead of a Hail Mary.

I would say it’s analytics, but I’ve seen Hail Marys work - I’ve never seen the lateral play work outside of Cal/Stanford. 
 

with the Hail Mary, you also get the benefit of a potential PI call, so I don’t get why it’s not done anymore.

I've seen it the thousand-pitch method work like 3 times in the NFL -- most recently being Miami/New England like 5 years ago. 

 

I get trying the lateral thing when your quarterback doesn't have the arm to get the ball to end zone, like last night when the Eagles we're inside their own 20 on the final play. But if your QB is in range to get it to the goal line, a hail mary should be attempted 1000% of the time.

Ryan Fitzpatrick talked about hail Marys on the Bill Simmons show a couple of weeks ago.

 

He said that because Hail Marys often lead to interceptions, a lot of guys don't want to throw them and be dinged for the bad stat later on.

The only multi-lateral plays I can remember succeeding in the NFL are the Miami Miracle and the River City Relay. Rodgers alone has more successful Hail Marys than that. If teams are going to switch to doing the former then they need to start practicing it, because every attempt this year has been woefully bad. That, or pay a marching band to rush the field.

River City Relay is my favorite one because the Saints missed the extra point to tie, which adds another level of comedy to the whole thing.

Music City Miracle, Bills at Titans in 99 is another one. Probably less laterals in that one, and one was *ahem* suspect, but it did win a playoff game and lead to Tennessee reaching the Super Bowl.

That was only one lateral, and it was more of a designed return play than a hope & prayer fustercluck. I view it the same as I do a hook and lateral, basically

Every year at least five plays happen in the NFL with some rule I've never heard of and then the refs are like "That's an illegal handoff, which can't be reviewed if the play occurred on second or third down with less than a minute left in the first half" and everyone is like WHY IS THAT EVEN A RULE? I get what your saying, but it also makes me wonder where you'd draw the line?  Like, during the standard review of every touchdown, say they're checking to see if both feet got down, and happen to notice an illegal pick by another receiver?  Or a missed holding call?  If you say yes, they should call those out, then are you asking them to recheck everything that happens on the play, or just the ones they notice?  Then if they later don't notice something, does the team that didn't get the call complain?

 

I totally understand why they only review the specific thing they're asked to review, because otherwise it's just endless.

We saw that in the NHL where every goal got challenged by a coach because MAYBE the puck MAY have left the zone by a millimetre before the goal? Or MAYBE one of the attacking wingers crossed the blue line JUST before the centre with the puck? 

Officials were Zapruder'ing every zone entry (thanks @the admiral) and it dragged everything to a halt.

That makes sense, but I think it’s fine in football for two reasons: 1) we’re only (in this case) talking about scoring plays and turnovers, which are thoroughly reviewed anyway , and 2) not talking about subjective calls like looking for holding or PI that require 500 angles and are a in gray area, but a blatant 15-yd facemask should be callable. It wouldn’t add any time to the process. At some point, common sense and fair play have to be considered.  
 

Also - the tight end is who was facemasked was likely looking at an all-pro bid, but will now miss most of the rest of the season due to a significant shoulder injury suffered on that very play.

Oh, and, um, you also can't legally execute hail mary on a kickoff return.

I think if you draw the line at making facemasks reviewable and end it there it would be fine. Whether or not the facemask was used to tackle is a pretty black or white ruling without a lot of wiggle room. I don’t see the problem.

The Raiders are still paying Gruden and recently finished paying off Jack Del Rio.  Lots of dead money if they fire Josh and are paying a third head coach, It makes sense financially, but it is a shame for their fan base.
