No more flag? I guess the USA Network is over 9/11.

The new logo is an upgrade I suppose. I think the one with the star from the late 90s was the best one they've had.

Here is the story about it from Media Week magazine:

USA Unfurls New Logo

June 21, 2005

By Anthony Crupi

USA Network took the wraps off a comprehensive new branding initiative Monday, the cornerstone of the channel's campaign to develop a distinctive, character-driven brand identity.

The starkest change at USA is the overhaul of its logo, which will no longer feature the American flag motif that served as its singular design element for a number of years. In its stead is a more elegant, stylized font incorporating white letters on a Tiffany-blue background.

In a time when Old Glory is being used to hustle everything from car insurance to soft drinks, USA and Sci Fi Channel president Bonnie Hammer said the flag was no longer a good fit for the network.

?We listened to our viewers and we were told constantly to ditch the flag, whether it was someone from a Red State or a Blue State,? Hammer told the assembled throng at a late afternoon reception at New York?s Gansevoort Hotel.

Rather than a destination, USA is ?about people,? Hammer said, adding that the new tagline, ?Characters Welcome,? underscores the strength of the characters that populate the network?s programming, as well as the people tuning in to watch.

A series of spots that will run beginning July 8 presents some of USA?s more popular characters in all their idiosyncratic glory. One clip trails Monk?s obsessive-compulsive detective (Tony Shalhoub) as he monomaniacally removes every expired foodstuff from the shelves of a supermarket, while another sees The Dead Zone?s reluctant psychic (Anthony Michael Hall) foresee the loss of all nine of his cat?s lives.

Other spots flip the script, turning the focus away from the actors in order to fixate on the sort of ?characters? USA calls its core audience. Light-hearted and quirky, the spots reflect what Hammer characterized as the net?s first stab at putting together a clearly defined brand strategy.

"For the first time, no matter where or how you see it, there will be no mistaking USA for another network,? she said. ?On or off-air, there will be a consistent visual style that will be integrated into everything we do.?

USA?s Web site will also offer an extension of its brand message, allowing viewers to upload digital content onto a robust interactive map of the U.S.

The branding initiative?s launch coincides with the season four premiere of Monk (10 p.m.).

As simple as it is, the first one is my favorite, and still the one I associate USA network with.

"The views expressed here are mine and do not reflect the official opinion of my employer or the organization through which the Internet was accessed."

I think this is a big improvement. The problem with the flag is that it looked good in the two-color version but seemed goofy when they went monochrome.

I for one hope so. I don't like corporate flag-waving in a craven attempt to gain customers.

i like the one with the star. it connects the name usa network with american imagry without the use of the flag. the new one is ok.
