Forgettable sports teams

Jumping in late so these teams may have already been mentioned. But I vote (one for each sport):

Kansas City Royals

Milwaukee Bucks

Tennessee Titans

Florida Panthers

Iowa State Cyclones

What fan gets amped up to see his team play the Bucks? Same for all of these teams. There's exceptions obviously, but I'd say for the most part no one is circling the schedule when any of these teams come to town.

I see your Tennessee & Iowa State and raise you Jacksonville and Idaho.

Sigs are for sissies.

Couldn't agree more there... I honestly keep forgetting that they're an FBS team. Everything from their uniforms to their venue screams FCS.

There are 122 teams in the big 4. Some, like the Yankees, Cowboys and Lakers are so widely know that they've almost transcended just being a sports franchise and are a genuine global brand. Others are well known if you follow the sport, or might have a star player or two, or have an iconic logo or uniform, or maybe they've been historically successful.

But some teams have absolutely nothing to write home about. They never really contend, their branding isn't amazing, they haven't had a household name player in living memory. If someone asked you to list every franchise for the sport, these are the teams you might get stuck on.

I'm in Australia, so obviously I have a very different perspective of the big 4 leagues than you guys who are mostly US based.

If I had to pick 1 or 2 from each of the sports, this is where i'd go:

NFL - Chiefs or Titans

NBA - Kings (when playing NBA 2K16, I started my myGM mode fantasy draft team with Sacramento because I wanted to rebrand and relocate, and they were the obvious choice).

NHL - Panthers or Flames

MLB - Twins or Brewers.

Now i'm sure there'll be some fairly wild variations in answers here depending on where you live etc, but i'd love to hear what people think.

NFL - Titans

MLB - Rockies

NBA - Kings

NHL - Panthers

A few years ago, I'd consistently forget about the Kansas City Royals. Maybe I should remove my beloved Detroit Lions from my memory, and they'll make two consecutive Superbowls.

Ah yes, the once-every-few-years Florida Panthers thread.

I'll just put it this way. I live in Sacramento, and I often forget the Kings are even here.

I made this a game for my girlfriend. She is not a sports fan, but puts up with me being one, and doesn't completely ignore the game when I'm watching. She tries, and that's all I can ask of her - after all, she played this "game" no questions asked.

I took a list of NFL, MLB, and NBA teams that I thought she wouldn't recognize. I didn't do NHL because she'd only recognize about 8 teams. I also made up some random team names as a placebo and didn't tell her they were fake until after.

Possible bias includes: we are both lifelong (apart from a 1-2 year stint in New Jersey) residents of the Carolinas - so obviously she's heard of the local teams, and probably less of West coast teams. She's also more likely to have heard of NFL teams, as I watch NFL more than anything. Also more likely to have heard of division rivals of my favorite teams (49ers, Braves, Hornets) as they play against each other more often.

That said, the results (teams she didn't recognize) of this incredibly scientific study are:

NFL: none

MLB: Arizona Diamondbacks

NBA: Sacramento Kings, Memphis Grizzlies, Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks*

*without even knowing I was mixing in made-up team names, she accused me of making up the Milwaukee Bucks. She didn't believe the Bucks were real until she Googled them. Gentlemen, the Milwaukee Bucks are the answer to this question.

You got it right.

No NFL team is forgettable because they are in primetime once a year, the lesser ones go on Hard Knocks, or the draft features them for sucking. (And the whole logo/uniform thing works for them too).

The Bills and Jaguars are on Yahoo! tomorrow, many older folks still have Yahoo! as their home page for News, thus they see the Jaguars.

Buried the lede here. What were the fake teams?

♫ oh yeah, board goes on, long after the thrill of postin' is gone ♫
