They probably raked in a good rating tonight. Congrats to Matt Kenseth, had him in our fantasy pool as well!

I had Matt Kenseth, 83 crashes, 2 rainouts, a jet engine explosion, and a green-white-checker finish... so I extra-win!

Nevermind. I picked him in another pool, so you just win.

NASCAR should seriously consider permanently running Daytona in prime time on Monday. I thought it worked pretty well tonight.

I disagree. I hated when they ran it late, and it just felt like another race. The 500 should be run at noon EST and finish with the winner basking in the sun (when it doesn't rain). There are way too many night races and there is nothing special about them anymore. Nascar should limit night races to the Coke 600, the second Bristol race, and the second Richmond race with Darlington moved back to Labor Day, not the weekend, Labor Day.

Alright, so the 2013 500 is going to have a volcano eruption, rogue yak stampede, UFO encounter, the Loch Ness Monster will emerge from Lake Lloyd, and it will be won by the pace car driver. Calling it now.

You forgot about the Godzilla attack on the garage area.

And the torrential downpour of bloody snow from those who feel that Jobing.com Arena would be better served as a parking lot.

There was a rogue Yak stampede in the 1972 race. You kids and your utter disregard for history.

That's how I felt watching it last night. It didn't seem like the Daytona 500 (partially due to it being a Monday). It just seemed like any other race to me. It almost felt like I was watching the Richmond race before the chase.

I agree with that. It didn't feel like the Daytona 500 to me, either. Maybe it's that my memories of watching the race as a child were always on a Sunday afternoon, but I don't like it under the lights. I don't mind it finishing under the lights, but keep the start in the afternoon unless circumstances like this year force it into a late start.

Yeah I'm with you guys on that. The race felt like the July night race until lap 160, then after Montoya made the jet dryer go boom it felt like the Bud Shootout.

Also, as much as it was nice to see pack racing back, the top line wasn't able to do anything last night. It was impossible for anybody to really make a charge late in the race

I can say that, as a casual observer, I really like the idea of night races on weeknights. In the summer, when all there is is baseball, I wouldn't mind it at all. Hell, I'd probably even get into it again for the first time since I was a wee little kid. I can't speak for other people, but on Sundays or Saturday Nights I have a bunch of other things I'd rather do than watch Nascar.

Early overnight ratings.

Last years race had a 15.5 million viewers.

Pretty respectable due to it being run on a Monday night and didn't end until 1am ET.

It did not do as well as last year, but was better than the 2010 race.

sports media watch

For some perspective, the Daytona 500 drew a lower overnight than every game of the NBA Finals (the series-low was a 10.5 for Game 2), and six of the seven World Series games (Game 3 drew a 7.4). However, the race earned a larger overnight than both the Orange Bowl (4.5) and Sugar Bowl (6.3) on ESPN.

On the Speed pre-race show they said that last week's Daytona 500 was the most watched ever on FOX. Maybe my idea of moving it to Monday night isn't as bad as you all think. :P

Anyway, for the CCSLC SCC League...

Red 41 Racing: 2, 48, 29, 9, 55.
