NFL '13 SEASON THREAD

Bummed to see John Lynch miss the cut. I'd love to see him there one day, but even being a huge Lynch fan, I still feel it's a bit of a stretch to put him in the hall.

Here's my SB timeline for tomorrow:

  • 4:30 PM: Wake up, scratch self. Figure out where I am and urinate.
  • 5:00 PM: Forgo further self-scratching, check twitter for news. Remember Super Bowl is today.
  • 5:30 PM: Holy crap, this game is kicking off early.
  • 6:00 PM: It's only been 30 minutes, but already I'm having to brush my teeth to get the tang of Peyton Manning's penis off my breath due to FOX cramming him mercilessly down my gullet.
  • 6:30 PM: 1,000th broadcast mention of "Omaha." Hope fades into despair.
  • 7:00 PM: Bruno Mars botches "Just The Way You Are," and reveals his glitter-encrusted scrotum. Tony Siragusa raises eyebrow, smiles coyly.
  • 7:30 PM: Seahawks re-injure Manning's neck, but he finishes game, regardless of how he looks like a J
  • 8:00 PM: Wake up from nap, realized I dreamed the entire thing and that the Broncos are winning a snoozer 13-0
  • 8:30 PM: Peyton Manning kneels out the final 8 drives of the game and the Broncos win a title
  • 9:00 PM: Check CCSLC for about 8 pages worth of Peyton Manning love, an 11-paragraph thesis by Still_MIGHTY about how "this is just right" and other stupid crap about who "really deserved this one" caps things off. I post some sort of mildly humorous .gif
  • 11:00 PM: Get to work, ESPN radio is in hour 3 of taking calls from apparently the entire United States who wanted Peyton Manning to win while cramming Papa Johns into their maws. Human evolution stalls, then eventually recedes about 20,000 years into the squawking, feces-consuming mud-hut inhabitant phase.
  • 4:00 AM: BRAK BRAK ME WANT PAPA JOHN I FIGHT HURL ROCK, EAT FECES, 18 MANNING IS OUR GOD OUR GOD OUR GOD

The Bus Jerome Bettis. He should've been selected before this too.

Honestly, TD deserves to be in before Bettis does.

I don't think TD deserves in. Not so much because of the short career, but because of all the successful running backs the Broncos pumped out after him. Tatum Bell, Mike Bell, Olandis Gary, Ruben Droughns, Mike Anderson, Ron Dayne. It has to be held against him at least a little, and considering there's already doubts because of how long (or short) of a career he had, I think that keeps him out in my book.

Jerome Bettis, however, was not snubbed. He's a guy that I'd probably put in, he's almost borderline still in my book. He mostly just had longevity. Never lead the league in rushing, and wasn't a guy who was in the top 5 or 10 every year for rushing, and wasn't a huge receiving threat.

But if you needed 2 yards he's your guy. 3 yards? Pass or punt. 2.5? Cast "animate corpse" on Kordell Stewart. But 2 yards man...

He'll get in eventually, it's just the RB situation is like the situation with the WRs. There are so many good people to play these positions, they all can't get in at the same time; but Bettis will get in one year.

Don't watch this.

This is bad. If you're on a news station the week of the Super Bowl being interviewed about the Super Bowl, you'll more than likely be asked who will win, even if you are some random doctor talking about how to stay healthy during the Super Bowl.

And unrelated, I 100% agree with this year's HOF class, and hopefully we see Marvin Harrison and Jerome Bettis in next year, as many people were saying.

Not only does he make a mistake, he also attempts to correct the lady that has it right!

Even though he's a "random doctor", most women that don't follow football at all know who (or at least Peyton Manning) is playing in the superbowl, let alone a middle aged man that is exposed to people all the time. (small talk purposes).

I feel like Andre Reed going in over Marvin Harrison is kind of a sympathy "Reed should've been in for quite some time" sort of deal. Harrison's day will come, and all will be good.

Obviously glad for Derrick Brooks, and glad for Michael Strahan.

That other WR didn't get in because the writers know about this:

I won't name him, but "Harvin Marrison" will have that incident in the discussion.

Is it me or is the NFL HOF the easiest one to get in to? They seem to put a ton of guys in every year, as opposed to MLB, who I think has had years that nobody got in.

Because more people play football than baseball. The ratio of Football hall of famers to the entire NFL alumni population is probably lower even than baseball hall of famers to everyone who has played in MLB.

It's really not that big an honor if a minimum nuumber of people get put in every year, and they always seem to put guys from the 60s and 70s in just because they need to reach the minimum. I get that opinions can change over time, but if you're not a HOFer in your first couple of years, you're not a HOFer.

I will agree with the opinion that a lot of baseball writers are delusional asses that think that they're in charge of protecting the integrity of the sport. Especially St Louis HOF voters, who prove year in and year out that they're incapable of being objective.

I was unaware of that piece. The last things I had read about Harrison had been this:

http://www.footballperspective.com/marvin-harrison-should-be-a-first-ballot-hall-of-famer/

Alleged shooting of Dwight Dixon

The details are pretty murky on this one, but Dwight Dixon alleged that Harrison shot him in April 2008. Here’s what we know: Harrison was never charged with a crime related to the incident. Not murder, not reckless whathaveyou, not obstruction of justice. Nothing.

That doesn’t mean Harrison didn’t shoot Dixon, of course. But I have no way of knowing, and I don’t think any of the Hall of Fame voters have any way of knowing, either. And, frankly, it’s not their job to know. Here’s what the HOF has to say regarding off-the-field conduct:

The only criteria for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame are a nominee’s achievements and contributions as a player, coach, or contributor in professional football in the United States of America.

Had Harrison actually been found guilty of a felony, I wouldn’t necessarily argue with voters who chose to ignore that particular bylaw. Jim Tyrer had an arguably HOF-worthy career, but his chances of Canton evaporated the moment he killed his wife and then turned the gun on himself.

But being accused by a civilian of committing a felony just as clearly falls short of the standard to bar induction. I have no idea where Dixon’s claim falls on the spectrum of “completely unsupported nonsense” to “Harrison did it” but we know he wasn’t charged with a crime. There are people who believe Ray Lewis is guilty of murder and we know that he obstructed justice, but I don’t think that’s going to prevent him from being a first-ballot selection. Was Harrison’s “off-the-field issue” issues1 more of less severe than those of Lewis? Jameis Winston just won the Heisman Trophy despite facing a rape accusation that may have been more credible than Dixon’s, but again, I’m not in the business of judging the credibility of accusations.

And in this particular case, waiting doesn’t seem likely to solve matters. This time next year, we aren’t going to know whether Harrison was guilty of shooting Dixon. I can understand the reluctance to honor a felon — frankly, how can anyone not understand that — but an uncharged accusation does not make the accused a felon.

Alright I'll go out on a limb with my prediction:

Seattle 24

Denver 7

And Bruno Mars chokes halftime away.

You really do live up to your reputation around here.

Aww :censored: off. Just because he didn't pick your favorite team, you're going to give him :censored:?

This reply is not because of WHO he picked, but rather the score he picked.

I didn't say anything to anyone else picking Seattle, because really, it could go either way.

No predictions from me but I like Denver's chances. I feel better about Peyton facing a defense that's strongest from the backfield to the defensive line than I would facing a team that's got an elite pass rush. Russell Wilson's mobility has me a little nervous but I think they can keep Marshawn Lynch somewhat in check -- and by that I don't mean shut him down completely.
