Houston Rockets Unveil New Logo, New Uniforms Still to Come

June 6, 2019 - 18:22 PM

The Houston Rockets blasted us off into the 2019-20 season this morning (a little early with the 2019 NBA Finals still going on and on, and on…), with the unveiling of their new “Global Logo” as well as setting a […]

Wtf is a global logo? Does anyone else have this?

From the article:

[The] NBA’s logo classification system is in its own world, but I’ll try to explain it. Every NBA team has the option of setting two primary logos — one intended for use domestically (“primary icon”) and one for use internationally (“global logo”). The global logo must include the full name of the team.

Each of these teams can then choose any of the logos in their existing set to be used as their “preferred primary mark”, and this could be any of their team logos — whether it’s an alternate, secondary, primary, or global.

An easy rule of thumb is that the global logo is that one that seems to have to incorporate all of the NBA logo rules (show a basketball, full team name, etc.)

And the Primary Icon is what the team would probably choose to go with if they could do what they wanted

So apparently further cementing themselves as a red/black team.  Bring back some freakin' yellow already!  I'd even gladly accept it as just a tertiary trim color, but it would do so much to differentiate them from all the other red/black teams.

This is a terrible design.  It looks like the design for an unauthorized, unofficial Rockets t-shirt.  Like they can slap any NBA logo on that gray ball and put it on a white towel and sell it at walmart or a flea market.

Aside from being generic AF... from a design standpoint its terrible.. the angle on the hoop/ring/whatever that is is down on the R but up on the planet.  You don't know which way you are looking. Then you have the drop shadows on the R itself going a third direction.

You have 4 different shades of gray/charcoal in that ball/planet thing.

And to drill even deeper, the position of the R itself obscures the seems on the ball in a way where it looks like the don't line up accurately.  The stroke on the ring doesn't overlap on the front so there's so sense that it is coming across the front instead of ending on the sides.  I can go on and on. Just terrible from start to finish.

Yeah it really does look like ‘generic basketball design with Rockets logo superimposed’. I’m pretty sure it’s supposed o represent a planet with rings, but then why are the rings so tall while also having no depth? Is it supposed to be a regular old banner around a basketball ? The rings on the R and ball clashing so much is really tough. How in the world am I seeing the R from the top and the ball from somewhere below when the R isn’t below the ball?

Reminds me of the what the Cavaliers did; Just slapping their primary icon on a standard-looking shield and introducing black (although they don't actually use black outside of the alternate uniform). It remains to be said if this is the direction Houston is going until we actually see the new uniforms, but I feel like I'll be pretty underwhelmed... and disappointed.

Man, I’m so disappointed in the Rockets.  Black is boring and why add black when the Bulls and Blazers and Raptors already use black.

I’d like to see red and white only, no drop shadows, no outlines, no grey/silver. I know it’s unpopular around here but I liked the shoulder hoops after they slimmed down the shoulders before the Nike takeover. I think that template without The black and silver would be a clean unique look. Just my $.02

This is really bothering me. The ball looks like it is in front of the rings, as if the ball is revolving around the rings. I know the possibilities in deep space are seemingly endless, but I don't think that's how gravity works.

If you remove the text, it looks more like a piece of jewelry than a planet.

I REALLY liked the Rockets branding when it first came out, but MY GOODNESS has it gotten stale. They should’ve just blown it up and started fresh.

From a somewhat graphic designers point of view in myself I think it’s horrible.

houston-rockets-new-logo-2019-2020.png

first off, it insanely annoys me the perspective of everything is. So you have the ring pointing up, but the basketball is pointing up right. And then you have the logo right smack in the middle with a shadow pointing to the left. Why would there be a logo with a ring, inside another logo that also has a ring. The colors: there’s four shades of black/grey. The contrast between the shades in the basketball is pointless because of how little contrast there is between the two. And on top of that you have the outer ring border thing going on.

in simpleton terms it’s dumb to have a giant black ball as the main part of the logo. Sports logos aren’t meant to be so big and dark with little contrast. That’s not gonna physically attract the eyes of fans. Plus, who thought it was a good idea to have a logo so elongated slapped onto a round ball?
