Awesome. I hope they go with Spiders, and I hope their colors are purple, black, and just a hint of red. 
 

We’ve already got the subtle tribute to Native Americans, but in a less offensive way, covered with the Braves. I don’t really think there was a road the Indians could’ve gone down that would’ve been effective had they kept the name. Why not start fresh rather than be perpetually handcuffed by past connotations?

I really hope they go with the Cleveland Rockstars. It's appropriate to Cleveland because they have the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Plus, they had the All-Star Game logo look like a guitar when they hosted it in 2019. Sounds way better than the Spiders in my opinion.

I tend to associate a "commodore" with the US Navy and Cleveland isn't exactly the first city that comes to mind, although it is located on a body of water. I suppose Lake Eerie has Coast Guard stations. I'm not sure how operative the term is in civilian shipping/boating. It just doesn't seem like a term that has strong ties to that specific region more than many others.

They probably could've kept the nickname if they would've dropped Wahoo when they moved into the Jake in '94, but it's really hard to make the case the name is honorific in any way if you spent a significant amount of time insisting you were right and refusing to reach out and work with actual Native Americans.

 

I strongly, strongly prefer Spiders as the name for the team and think the argument that they shouldn't use the name because of its connection with futility to be particularly dumb. This is a franchise that went 41 years between postseason appearances! They had a 34 straight years where they never won more than 86 games! I get that the Red Sox and White Sox became particularly known for their futility, but Jesus, if bad baseball was a reason to adopt a name or not, they should've dropped Indians on that merit alone in '94.

 

The biggest branding mistake the franchise ever made was dropping the wishbone C back in the '70s, which was by far and away the best hat they've ever worn. It ceded that logo entirely to the Reds, and now they're stuck in no-man's land with the block C. 

 

My primary request, though, is that the club's colors remain navy and red. I've had this discussion enough times on this board, but Cleveland's baseball club has worn navy since its founding, and has consistently worn red alongside it for as long as any other major league club. I'd really, really like that to continue, and think a charter member changing something that's been constant would be silly.

I guess I should brush up on my American history. That's a pretty compelling connection. Although it seems much more fitting for a Detroit team, I suppose it could work for Cleveland too.

Specifically this guy, Oliver Hazard Perry, "The Hero of Lake Erie":

 

 

 

 

He wasn't actually a commodore at the time of the battle, but he was later promoted to the rank of commodore, and everybody in northern Ohio knows him as Commodore Perry. There's several towns and schools in Ohio named after him, as well as a giant memorial tower on an island in Lake Erie.

Exactly. They missed the boat pretty badly on that one, forever shackling the name to Wahoo.

That’s exactly what I’ve been trying to say for some time! The Indians name has known consecutive decades of failure, with only a few bright spots in between mediocrity and trashiness (‘95-‘01, 2007, and 2016-‘19). Changing the name might have been a good idea in 1994, especially to wash the stink of the past few decades out of their club. Heck, look at the second-to-last uniforms the pre-‘94 club wore:

Indeed. It was a mistake to get rid of the Wishbone C. They could’ve evolved it to be distinct from the Reds’ logo with adjusted proportions and maybe a serif (sort of an allusion to the Block C?).
